4 PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE AT SAINT JOSEPH HOSPITAL The professional nursing practice model at Saint Joseph Hospital is known as ENGAGE (Empowered Nurses Get Active in Growth and Excellence). The model provides a foundational structure for all nurses in which to enhance professional growth, guiding practice in collaboration with others. The model is based on four components of professional practice: operational aspects of efficiency and effectiveness, worklife environment, clinical practice and education, and performance improvement. These areas constitute the major focus of the four councils based upon Timothy Porter-O Grady s work in shared governance. The councils are interdependent, receiving guidance from the Nursing Coordinating Council. Involvement also translates into committee work within the patient care unit, expanding the depth of decision-making to even higher levels. Promoting staff involvement in addressing issues relevant to professional practice, the councils sustain the belief that those closest to the issues must be the ones to recommend and institute solutions. Thus, the bi-directional flow of communications and problem-solving allows for issues to be raised along a continuum of narrow to broader focus. The degree of engagement is dependent on the scope of the issue, from unit specific to nursing department wide. The rewards of governing practice through the ENGAGE model provide for a rich work environtment with a myriad of opportunities for professional enhancement. As nurses, we have a responsibility to meet the needs of our patients and families and the community we serve. At Saint Joseph Hospital, we have renewed our commitment to excellence by establishing our professional practice model: ENGAGE. This booklet is intended to be informative, enlightening and inspirational so that you will become ENGAGED in your practice of professional nursing at Saint Joseph Hospital! 4

Nationally renowned for our innovative practice environment, our nurses achieve the highest level of outcomes by partnering with patients and their families, other health care providers and our communities. 5

6 NURSING COORDINATING COUNCIL Purpose: The Nursing Coordinating Council provides a forum for Councils to collaborate and establish overall direction for Nursing Services in support of Saint Joseph s mission and strategies. Accountabilities: The Coordinating Council is accountable for the coordination of activities of the overall Councils. The Council will: Coordinate and oversee of individual council goals in relation to the nursing operational plan. Develop and maintain processes to facilitate effective functioning of the Nursing Councils. Promote networking and partnerships among members of Patient Care Services. Be responsible for planning Annual Meeting. 7 NURSING EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE AND RESEARCH COUNCIL Purpose: To provide a defined infrastructure to support nursing research, advance nursing practice and further the implementation of evidence-based practice. The council provides support for nurses to identify and investigate nursing areas of interest; conduct scientific inquiry; and collect, analyze and evaluate data. The Council will facilitate dissemination of research findings. Accountabilities: Review/approve nursing research studies/proposals. Facilitate evidence based practice/research fellowships. 10 NURSING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL Purpose: To provide the strategic direction and support for the education of Patient Care Services Caregivers. Accountabilities: Ensure education is clinically relevant and coordinated with theh Nursing Education Department. Ensure education supports and promotes professional development. Adhere to ANA Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development. Provide the framework that assesses, supports, and nurtures competence, and clearly defines role expectations for new Caregivers. Assist in the development of patient education efforts in conjunction with the Patient Education Committee. Promote and support the nurses as teacher. Communication/collaboration with appropriate council on specific projects as needed. 11 NURSING QUALITY COUNCIL Purpose: To provide, facilitate, and evaluate a framework for continuous improvement of nursing practice for consistent quality outcomes. Accountabilities: Develop and implement a nursing quality improvement plan in collaboration with nursing s Performance Improvement Specialist. Coordinate nursing performance improvement initiatives. Evaluate trends and patterns of nursing performance outcomes. 12 NURSING WORK LIFE COUNCIL Purpose: To promote nursing engagement and to attract new nurses and retain our qualified, talented nursing workforce. Accountabilities: Promote nursing engagement through recruitment and retention activities. Actively focus on ways in which our team can address meaningful recognition at Saint Joseph Hospital. Actively explore feedback from staff on ways that we can have nurses engage in activities together both at work and outside of work. Explore nurse mentor programs to initiate. Measure nursing satisfaction and engagement by promoting participation in the NDNQI Nurse Survey. Recognize that nursing is about TEAM work, not just in our profession but other healthcare professions as well which results in job satisfaction. Explore ways to improve satisfaction and engagement. Plan recognition programs to celebrate accomplishments of Nursing, including annual Nurses Week celebrations. Encourage nurses to participate in community events that promote the profession of nursing. Collaboration: To work together in a joint intellectual effort for the development and ongoing support of relationships between and among health-care professionals. Critical thinking: Disciplined intellectual criticism that combines research, knowledge of historical context and balanced judgment. Culture: The environment where one thrives, differentiated by beliefs, values and expectations. Empowerment: To give or to share with someone power or authority. Leadership: The ability to guide, direct, or influence people. Professional practice model: A structure for all nurses in which to enhance professional growth, guiding practice in collaboration with others. Shared decision-making: The process of engaging staff in critical decisions pertinent to daily worklife. Values: Principles of behavior demonstrated in practice. 13
