New Horizons Addiction Rehabilitation Centers for Men and Women The Program New Horizons Addiction Rehabilitation Centers include a seven- bed rehabilitation center for women in addition to a separate and independent twelve bed facility for men. These facilities are located in the beautiful city of Sydney, on Cape Breton Island, in the Province of Nova Scotia, Canada. Each of these rehabilitation centers offer comprehensive assessment, residential treatment, and aftercare planning to both men and women with opioid, alcohol, and/or other substance abuse disorders. Staff at these facilities deliver dynamic, inclusive, gender specific recovery management programs through all the phases of addiction treatment. Staff support patients through pre-admission assessment, stabilization, and mapping of individualized recovery plans. The goal is for patients to transition from intensive clinical management within a residential setting to self- management within a supportive recovery community over time and with professional support. Staff also meet with individuals to assist them in making informed choice in selecting either abstinence based or Harm Reduction models of recovery; providing the added option of current evidence based Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) pathways for Opioid Use Disorder. These specific treatment options are discussed with individuals and their supportive others at the preadmission stage The Staff Highly trained and dedicated staff of physicians, nurses, counselors, and administrative staff, guide and support patients and their families through each step towards mental, physical, spiritual, and social well-being. They offer counseling, support groups, and ongoing participation in a recovery community as well as the supervision and structure required for a successful recovery. New Horizons recognizes the unique needs of Canada s First Nations people and utilizes evidence based and strengths based programs in the treatment of indigenous clients, providing culturally sensitive treatment while developing strong links with First Nations communities. The facility opens itself up to First Nations Healing Principles and Practices in the treatment of addiction among and works with these communities, First Nations treatment providers, and Elders in the treatment of addiction. The Facilities New Horizons Addiction Rehabilitation Centers for Men and Women are located on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, population 132,00. The facilities are strategically located to offer a
perfect mix of solitude and beauty while maintaining access to key services and a wellestablished recovery community. Each facility offers individual private rooms with a private attached bath. All meals are nutritiously prepared and are cooked on site. Each facility has on site laundry facilities, gym, and staff available on site 24 hours per day. For family members visiting from outside the area the New Horizons offers a separate suite for short stays as per our Policy on Visitors. There is also a separate outside sheltered smoking facility. The program schedule runs 7 days per week and is structured in such a way as to provide patients with an optimal mix of psycho-educational, treatment, and process groups intertwined with individual counseling and 12 Step Programs. Integrated throughout the program schedule are therapeutic activities focused on individual physical and spiritual regeneration. These activities focus on self- discovery and reconnecting with one s self, with one s community, and with the world around them. These activities are planned around the idyllic setting of one of the world s most beautiful islands. The Admission Process After a patient has contacted New Horizons Rehabilitation Center clinical staff will complete a pre-admission assessment, either in person or by phone. Pre-admission assessments are completed by a Registered Nurse with a goal of gathering all appropriate information with which to develop the safest and most appropriate treatment path for each individual. The Registered Nurse reviews all assessments with the clinic physician and other members of the treatment team. Family members and supportive others are invited and encouraged, with patient consent, to become part of the planning and recovery process. The pre-admission interview will serve to inform the steps forward and whether individuals meet the criteria to be admitted into treatment. Once this is determined, specific treatment pathways are reviewed and discussed providing options for moving forward with treatment for his or her specific issue. Some specific treatment options available at New Horizons Addiction Treatment Clinic are covered in the following sections. Residential Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder New Horizons Addiction Rehabilitation Centers integrate the COR-12 (Comprehensive Opioid Response with the 12 Steps) into treatment at their residential facilities for men and for women.
This program, was developed at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation (HBFF) in response to the critical need for a new and different approach to the opioid crisis that is sweeping across North America. This approach integrates evidence based pharmacological treatments for opioid use disorders with residential treatment, counseling, group work, and the 12 Step recovery principles. New Horizons Residential Treatment Program for Opioid Use Disorder involves the following; A recommended minimum 6 week stay in a residential intensive treatment program. Extensions can be discussed with your counselor. Upon admission patients undergo a complete nursing assessment including medical and urine testing as well as management of withdrawal if indicated with the use of evidence based clinical scales and interventions. A complete physical assessment by the clinic physician is completed within 24 hours of admission. After the initial assessment, the treatment team meets with the patient and together they make an informed decision as to the treatment pathway options available, The three Opioid Treatment Pathway options available at New Horizons include; 1. The No Medication Pathway; the patient remains in residential treatment attends groups, counseling, opioid specific support groups and 12 Step Programs. 2. Medically Assisted Treatment using Suboxone. Patients are stabilized on Suboxone during the course of the inpatient stay and they participate in the recommended treatment groups, counseling and programs as outlined in their specific recovery program. 3. Medically Assisted Treatment using Methadone. The patient is stabilized on Methadone during the course of their intensive residential stay, they attend and participate in all groups, counseling, programs and 12 Step Meetings which are outlined in the treatment plan and program schedule. Once stabilized on a specific pathway, patients are assigned to a specific nurse/counselor and Individual counseling. They attend groups including Opiate Specific Support Groups, 12 Step Facilitation, Structured Relapse Prevention, Education, and Process Groups along with other recovery activities. These begin immediately after admission and are the core of New Horizon s treatment approach. Clinical and medical staff perform ongoing assessment of physical, medical, and mental health issues.
Discharge planning with Opioid Specific Support Groups, vocational and educational, follow up counseling, 12 Step Program involvement, and reconnection with family and home community all begins on admission and continues throughout the residential component into the intensive outpatient component. New Horizons Intensive Outpatient Care Following the New Horizons Intensive Inpatient treatment program patients step down into a safe and drug free Sober Living environment in the community. This component of treatment lasts a minimum of 6 weeks and involves the following; Continued attendance at Opioid Specific Support Groups and 12 Step Programs. Individual counseling 9 hours of group and educational sessions per week delivered during the day and evening hours. Random urine drug screens Movement towards reintegration back into less intensive continuing care involving support groups and counseling. New Horizons Residential Program for Alcohol and Substance Use Disorders For alcohol and substance use disorders there is a recommended minimum stay of 6 weeks. Individual extensions can be negotiated with treatment staff. On admission patients undergo a complete nursing assessment including urine testing and management of withdrawal (if indicated) through the use of evidence based clinical scales and interventions. A complete physical assessment by the clinic physician is completed within 24 hours of admission. After the initial assessment by a registered nurse, the treatment team meets with the patient and reviews the treatment program, goals of treatment, and discharge planning begins. If agreed upon, the patient signs a contract and treatment progresses. Active involvement in 12 Step Support Groups (AA, NA), Individual counseling, daily educational and therapeutic program sessions. Clinical and medical staff perform ongoing assessment of physical, medical, and mental health issues. Discharge planning with support groups, vocational and educational, follow up counseling, 12 Step Program involvement, and reconnection with family and home
community all begins on admission and continues throughout the residential component into the intensive outpatient component. New Horizons Residential/Community Managed Methadone Taper For individuals who have been on methadone maintenance treatment but now wish to come off in a medically controlled and professionally monitored environment, New Horizons offers a methadone taper program utilizing a combined residential and community approach. The following procedure outlines this approach, Individuals being prescribed methadone in either in a physicians office or in an opioid recovery clinic initiate contact with their own prescriber or clinic to discuss entering a methadone withdrawal program. The patient then contacts New Horizons Addiction Treatment Clinic and initiates the conversation with treatment staff. Staff at New Horizons initiate a pre-admission assessment either in person or by telephone. New Horizons staff contact the originating methadone prescriber to complete the pre-admission assessment and assess whether the patient meets admission criteria. If admission criteria are met, a preliminary treatment plan is developed with staff, patient, and family input (with patient consent). A recommended minimum 6 week stay in a residential intensive treatment program. Extensions can be discussed with your counselor. On admission patients undergo a complete nursing assessment including urine testing and management of withdrawal if indicated through the use of evidence based clinical scales and interventions. A complete physical assessment by the Clinic Physician is completed within 24 hours of admission. After the initial assessment, the treatment team meets with the patient and decides the treatment pathway options available. Program Pricing For a 6- week program the cost is $21,000. Stays longer than the 6 weeks will be considered on a case by case basis in collaboration with the treatment team and treatment funders. Financing
Financing options can be discussed with staff prior to admission. This is a privately operated facility that can work with your drug insurance companies and other funding providers to develop a plan that works for the individual and their families.
