29 Mary, LSW, recently took a job as a case manager for a social service agency in her neighborhood. She has personal relationships with many of the agency s clients and their families, and in the past has even helped some of them out financially. This includes John, a current client, whom Mary and her husband have known as friends for many years. Recently, Mary ran into a well-known community leader in the neighborhood. He mentioned that he heard John had been ill and unable to work and that Mary had been helping him out at the agency. The community leader went on to say: I m taking donations for John s family. Would you like to contribute? And by the way, how is John doing? How should Mary respond?
30 Issues to consider: Client/Social Worker Professional Relationship Confidentiality (Minnesota Statute 148E.230) Professional Boundaries (Minnesota Statute 148E.220) Dual Relationships Prepare for this situation before it happens!
