1 Medical Assisting You re a caring and compassionate person who loves to help others. As a student in the Certified Medical Assisting Program your compassionate nature will be enhanced by the essential knowledge you need to become a Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA), as well as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA). The Medical Assisting pathway is offered in the Health Careers Academy at Henninger High School for any student interested in obtaining a Medical Assistant Certification upon graduation from high school. The program provides information and skills common to all medical assistants, including the ability to: Take a patient s history Prepare an examination room Assist physicians during examinations CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: Medical Lab Technician, Phlebotomist, Nurse, Radiology Technician, Respiratory/Occupational/Physical Therapist, Case Manager 121

All students in 9th grade will receive CFM and Exploratory classes. Student will have earned the 12th grade integrated ELA credit upon successful completion of the Medical Assisting 100, 200 and 300. Student will have earned the 12th grade integrated Science credit upon successful completion of the Medical Assisting 100, 200 and 300. Student will receive the Endorsement upon successful completion of the Medical Assisting 100, 200 and 300 and must pass the prescribed technical assessment and completion of a commencement level project. Student are eligible for.5 Credits of Health 122

3 COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to help students identify interests, traits, and skills and then help connect them to effective college and career planning for a healthcare career. This course gives the student an introduction to the profession of medical assisting, its scope of practice, and career opportunities available for the clinical medical assistant and medical administrative assistant. In addition, an orientation to the healthcare environment, receptionist duties, and computers in healthcare, communications skills, and office maintenance are emphasized including ICD10/CPT coding, billing, bookkeeping, scheduling, electronic medical records, telephone and communication techniques, phone triage, medical ethics, biomedical and legal issues, HIPAA, OSHA regulations, and patient education techniques. Employability, professionalism, and career readiness skills are emphasized. The class will primarily be taught by the lecture and demonstration method and supported by various media materials to address various learning styles. Supervised lab time is provided for students to complete required projects. COURSE OBJECTIVES By the end of the Introduction to Medical Assisting course students will be able to: 1. Be acquainted with a wide range of occupational and educational opportunities for college and career readiness. 2. Participate in hands-on activities and create products to demonstrate the knowledge and skills of a Medical Assistant. 3. Understand the career application of Medical Assisting information through participation in work-based learning experiences. 4. Demonstrate skills in processing self-knowledge in relation to the Medical Assistant course and program, in relation to the world of work, and in relation to future planning. The course must be passed with 70% or better. Grading scale: A=90-100%, B=80-89%, C=70-79%, D=60-69%, F=50-59%. ADDITIONAL COURSE POLICIES Attendance is an important asset in any program. Students who attend all class meetings are more likely to accomplish the course successfully. There will be NO cellular phones permitted during lectures. Calls and texts can be made before or after class, or during break. All students are expected to follow all posted clinic rules. The first offense will result in a verbal warning. The second will be a written warning and possible class suspension. The third offense will result in immediate dismissal from the externship. Professional behavior at all times is expected.
