1 Royal Review RVH says Thanks to the media August 31, 2017 Sea Monsters roared at Dragon Boat Festival Barrie Examiner Every summer members of RVH s Corporate Communications and Foundation teams visit various media partners. The teams brought cookies, but more importantly, wanted to say thank you to the local media who supported RVH throughout the year. Whether they have covered a health topic or promoted an event, they have helped us share important messages with the community. In fact, in 2016 RVH was featured in 337 news stories with 99.6 per cent of those stories being positive. Thank you to: the Barrie Examiner, Barrie Advance, CTV Barrie, Barrie Today, Springwater News, KOOL FM Rock 95, Fresh FM, BIG 101.1,Life 100.3, SNAP Barrie, The Dock and KICX. Fresh Radio Photo: Carol Holden A sea monster was spotted at the Barrie Dragon Boat Festival on August 26 - the RVH Sea Monsters that is. The small but mighty team of 17 sea monsters showed true TEAM RVH spirit as they paddled in the Iron division after the first two races. In their last race they competed against Georgian College and Simcoe Catholic Family Services (SCFS). RVH placed second with SCFS winning only by 1.5 seconds. Congratulations to the RVH Sea Monsters and thank you to the team members - Carol Holden, Darrell Sewell, Angela Sewell, Kaylee MacMillan, Denise Philpott, Helen Abushawish, Sherry Ruttan, Mitch Greene, Lindsay Petersen, Christine Delguidice, Margie Maciag, Patrick Lameront, Sherry Davis, Kelly McDonald, Lisa Rhodenizer, Krystal Feikema, Caitlin Lembo and Brendan Delahunt. Cardiac Update: Interventional Cardiologist hired RVH has achieved yet another major milestone in the development of the new regional cardiac program. We re thrilled to announce that Dr. Mark Kotowycz, an Interventional Cardiologist, will join RVH as the Medical Director of our Advanced Cardiac Care/ Catheterization Labs in the fall of Dr. Kotowycz comes to RVH from Windsor Regional Hospital where he is the Medical Director of the hospital s catheterization lab, and was instrumental to the successful implementation of a 24/7 cath lab STEMI program and, most recently, their program expansion. Previously he practiced at the University Health Network and Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg. Dr. Kotowycz completed his specialty training in internal medicine at McMaster University and cardiology at McGill University where he also earned a Master of Business Administration. He is a fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as well as the American College of Cardiology. He is a published researcher, speaker and currently an adjunct professor of medicine at Western University s Schulich School of Medicine. There is a significant need for advanced cardiac services in North Simcoe Muskoka and I am very excited to be joining RVH at this early stage of the program s development, says Dr. Kotowycz. I have watched the community rally behind this program over the years and support its development. It has been planned with the input of our healthcare partners, patients and families, and will bring lifesaving care closer to home for heart patients throughout the region. Dr. Kotowycz joins RVH s team of nine cardiologists and is a joint recruitment with our cardiac partner, Southlake Regional Health Centre (SRHC). He will practice at both RVH and SRHC until RVH s program is fully up-and-running.

2 August 31, 2017 RVH Royal Review CYMH construction at drywall stage RVH experts hit the airwaves Lecia Fagan, Project Coordinator, Planning and Redevelopment, walks through the construction site of our new Child and Youth Inpatient Unit with Fred Peitsch, superintendent with Chart Construction. To date, drywall in the unit is 75 per cent complete and half of the electrical is done. Both plumbing and ventilation is also at the 75 per cent mark with the next steps to finish door frames, as well as continue drywall, paint and flooring. The colours for the unit are bright blues, purples and aqua and were chosen with input from PFAC members. In addition, the tender for furniture has just closed and the team will be looking for functionable, youth-friendly pieces for the unit. Stay tuned! Karen Hergott, Respiratory Therapist, records the first of three segments for the new radio spot RVH Health Bytes to air on Fresh Radio 93.1 and BIG FM starting on September 7. The 30second spot will feature RVH experts speaking about current health issues. A corresponding one-minute video on the same topic will be featured on both stations websites. Other experts you will hear from in the upcoming months are: Dr. George Karasmanis, Dr. Stephen Pizzale, Tara Thomas Tarcza (dietitian) and Alda Tee (Community Stroke Coordinator). Stay tuned - we will let you know when they are on-air. The first ones for the month of September will be Hergott (Fresh FM) and Tarcza (BIG101.1). Imaging welcomes three new members to the team and they have X-ray vision Imaging Services recently welcomed new members to the team three Siemens general radiology units. One unit has been installed and application training has already begun. The equipment for the other two rooms should be installed by the end of November This new state-of-the-art equipment is replacing older units previously purchased in These machines are RVH s primary X-ray units in addition to the three portable machines. Each year RVH performs about 75,000 X-rays. 3 August 31, 2017 Film shot at RVH to be shown at Toronto and Barrie film festivals in the fall Last August a few scenes for the movie Porcupine Lake were filmed at RVH and involved some of the members of TEAM RVH. The film is now complete and scheduled to have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, September 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Scotiabank Theatre Cinema 3. Tickets go on sale September 4 at 10 a.m. You can purchase tickets at tiff.net. The film has also been submitted to the Barrie Film Festival (October 13-22). The photo below was taken after a long day of filming and includes Director Ingrid Veninger (centre, left) of punk Films, and the two teenage stars of the film Lucinda Armstrong Hall and Charlotte Salisbury (right), along with RVH s (from left) Mandy Belinger, EVS; Dr. George Karasmanis, Emergency physician; Christan Edwards, EVS; and Josee Dixon, Patient Food Services. For the use of RVH, the film crew made a donation to RVH s Hearts & Minds campaign, specifically for the new Child and Youth Mental Health program. Once we receive more details about the film s release at the Barrie Film Festival we will share that information with you and hopefully see you there. CCU & Cardiac Renal celebrate patient scores The Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) and Cardiac & Renal Inpatient unit are keenly focused on improving their patient experience scores. They consulted with their Cardiac Patient and Family Advisory Council and their recommendation was for the teams to focus on the bedside shift report. And the results have clearly paid off! Since April, the CCU has increased by five per cent and Cardiac & Renal had a five per cent increase in July. Current patient satisfaction scores are 79 per cent for CCU and 75 per cent for Cardiac & Renal. This was cause for a celebration so the teams invited RVH President and CEO Janice Skot to join them for cupcakes and share the great news. Patient satisfaction is one of RVH s corporate goals and is measured on the Quality Improvement Plan. Focusing on some key clinical tactics, like bedside shift report, hourly rounding and using a standardized introduction really can and will make a difference. RVH Royal Review Transition in roles in ITS Kenelda Gilmour has transitioned to the role of Service Desk Team Lead and assumes responsibility of supporting the Service Desk team with day to day requirements. Most recently Shelli provided support for the ITS Application and the Advanced Cardiac Project.
