1 Comboni Hospital Kyamuhunga is a PNFP Hospital, located in Ryabagoma Village Kyamuhunga Catholic Parish in Kyamuhunga Sub-County, Igara West Constituency Bushenyi District. It is a Roman Catholic Church based Institution in Mbarara Archdiocese affiliated to UCMB. It is approximately 80km from Mbarara town on Mbarara -Kasese High way and 15km from Bushenyi District headquarters. The Hospital was gazetted in May 1996 with a capacity of 100 beds. With a Maternity department, surgical ward, General Medical ward, temporary Operation Theatre and some Staff houses. In 1999, the hospital was given the responsibility of being the headquarters of a Health Sub-District (HSD). Supervising, providing various health activities in Igara West Health Sub-District. The Health Sub-District comprises of 3 Sub-counties i.e. Kyamuhunga, Nyabubare, Kakanju; with a total of 20 parishes and 2 wards in Ishaka Bushenyi Town council. The main socio-economic activities of the communities around the hospital are small-scale agriculture, animal rearing and occasional trading. The main health problems are Malaria, Respiratory infections HIV/AIDS and skin infections to mention but a few. Onchocercioisis is also a big health problem. The Hospital is owned by the Registered Trustees of Mbarara Archdiocese. The Archdiocese is the entity that holds the legal titles of the ownership. There is a functional board of governors appointed by the Arch Bishop The Hospital provides its services in fulfillment of the Mission of the Roman Catholic Church Health Services in Uganda, as approved by the Episcopal Conference on 24/06/1999. The hospital operates in pursuit of good of the individual person of the sick and the common good of the people. Its services are committed to a holistic approach in healing by treating, preventing diseases and promoting health. 1
2 The hospital works in co-operation with other actors in health care provision, including government, in line with the standing laws and regulations and accepts the coordinating role of the Diocesan Health Coordinator. In the provision of its services, the hospital does not discriminate on the ground of religious or political affiliation, race, ethnic origin, gender, social status, or income. A preferential option for the poor is pursued. The hospital operates in line with government policies and is a Not-For-Profit organization. Surpluses, generated in the course of operation are not to the owner or to the Management, but are utilized for the improvement of the hospital s services. The hospital is a 100 bed Private Not for Profit (PNFP) health unit and provides the minimum health care package comprehensive of curative, preventive, promotive and rehabilitative care, to the community in Kyamuhunga, Igara West HSD and Bushenyi. Specialized services are: - X-rays, Ultrasound, Functional ART clinic, Voluntary Counseling and Testing on a daily basis, PMTCT, Hypertensive and Diabetics Mellitus clinics. Antenatal clinic, Dental services, the hospital now has an independent operation theater opened in February 2007 It supervises and monitors the provision of minimum health care package to the population, by all health Units in Igara West Health Sub-District. (Two major Hospitals, Four HCIII, Seven HCII) Management of Comboni Hospital The Hospital s Management, is guided by a spirit of Stewardship, shared responsibility, transparency and accountability. The ordinary of Mbarara Archdiocese is the supreme authority of Comboni Hospital Kyamuhunga. He shall exercise the General Administration of the Hospital directly and indirectly, through the Board of Governors. He shall appoint members of the Board of Governors to govern the Hospital on his behalf. The B.O.G term of office is for a period of 3 years renewable. Members of B.O.G failing to attend Meetings without justification for 3 times will have to be substituted with more committed persons. The day to day running of the hospital is by the management team comprised of the medical superintendent, matron and hospital administrator. 2
3 Geographical Location Comboni Hospital Kyamuhunga is located in Ryabagoma Village, Kyamuhunga Sub-County, Igara West Constituency Bushenyi District, Mbarara Archdiocese. It is approximately 80km from Mbarara town on Mbarara -Kasese High way and 15km from Bushenyi District headquaters. It is 2kms on the right just on Ishaka - Kasese high way. Electricity Comboni Hospital Kyamuhunga is connected to the national Electricity network. Most households in the area are however not connected, as the service was pulled by the Hospital and the neighborhood has not yet taken advantage of the opportunity apart from the parish and the schools. 3
4 Sewage Comboni Hospital Kyamuhunga use septic tanks for sewage treatment and pit latrines. However the pit latrines have become expensive to maintain as they fill up often. The hospital has resorted to water borne toilets Roads A reasonably good network of all weather gravel roads serves the area. These are feeder roads which all connect to the Main road Mbarara Kasese highway which is tarmac surfaced. Transportation and Communication Road travel for persons is commonly by commuter mini-buses (14 seats), which connect with other local area as well as nearby towns. Motorcycles (locally known as bodaboda) for traveling short distances are also available. Telephone Communication is available for mobile phones only as the network present is for mobile telephone net works. The Hospital has a communication network with other Hospitals through e- mail.( kyamu@ucmb.co.ug ) Topography Comboni Hospital is located on a sloppy hill at the range of m heights above sea Level. Its vegetation is of lowland rain forest with patches of wet savannah grassland. It also borders Kalinju Forest (largest forest reserve in Bushenyi district with Eco tourism sites) Most of the soils are fertile and good for cultivation and rearing of animals. Climate The climate of the area is equatorial climate. Two rainy seasons namely March-May then Mid August- December, The other months are comparatively dry. No weather extremes occur and all seasons are suitable for travel. Rainfall, temperatures, sunshine, thunder, and relative humidity are all part of the weather for this place. 4

The Hospital is therefore committed to a holistic, integrated action in health. Mission: The Mission of Comboni Hospital is to provide health care to the needy and to fight diseases and poverty, thus witnessing the maternal concern of the Church for every sick person regardless of ethnic origin, social status, religious or political affiliation. Objectives The hospital aims at providing a healing environment for the sick, their families and communities, inspired by the example of Jesus Christ and guided by the Catholic Social and Ethical teachings. 1. To provide the curative services, as described for a HSD referral hospital, to the population of the established catchment area, to patients referred by other health units, and those requesting assistance; 2. To provide integrated preventive and promotive health care services to the people of the established catchment area in accordance with the stated national and catholic health policies; 3. To ensure that the services are financially accessible for the vulnerable and less privileged, Pregnant women, Children and the elderly 7
8 4. To plan, budget and manage the services in a cost effective and sustainable manner 5. To collect, compile, analyse and use data for service provision and management information in view of improving the effectiveness of the health actions and the efficiency of the hospital, 6. To perform the duties delegated to the Health Sub-district of Igara west as assigned by Bushenyi District Health Authorities. 7. To secure the presence of Chaplain in the Hospital to animate the people of God gathered in the hospital. 8

10 Visiting Hours: The Hospital is open day and night. It works from Monday to Sunday, Patients can be visited from 8:00Am to 9:30Am in the Morning and from 12:45 Pm 2:30 Pm in the afternoon and then from 7:00 Pm to 9:45 Pm in the evening. Admission procedure: Patients who come during OPD Working hours are admitted through OPD. Those who come after 5:00Pm are admitted by Nurses on duty, the Doctor on call is called to review the patients. The ward has a reception were patients are first attended to, given first aid, IV lines passed, samples taken off for laboratory investigations and the patients are then allocated beds where follow up is done during daily ward rounds. Special events: World day of the sick celebrated every 11 th of February annually Health Assembly is held once a year in February Nurse s day A call on development partners to come and participate in the following activities for development of this institution:- 1. Promoting community involvement in the planning and management of health services 2. Recruitment, retention and training of staff both clinical and non clinical 3. improving the hospital infrastructure 4. Improving diagnostic capacity to include specialized services such as culture and sensitivity, PCR 5. Building a firm financial base through income generating activities, increasing transparency and accountability. 6. Increase the use of the health information in the management of hospital service delivery 7. Cooperate with partners in the central and local governments, international, national and local non-government organizations, and the community 8. Lobby for funding from potential donors to support health care delivery 9. Improving hospital management with emphasis on human resources, finances, and logistics and support sectors 10
