4 Day1 light-hearted look at the history of nursing, participants will be reminded of the historical events, which have shaped the current world 8:00 am 9:15 am: KEYNOTE: We ve Come A Long Way Nursing Then & Now Deborah Poole RN, MS, CCRN From the days of Florence Nightingale to the high-tech world of the ICU, the nursing profession has grown and changed to keep pace with the challenging field of providing quality care for the sick. Nursing in the 21st Century is a far cry from the earlier days. In this of the critical care nurse. LUNCH 12:30-1:30 9:30 am 10:45 am 11:00 am 12:30 pm 1:30 pm 3:00 pm 3:15 pm 4:30 pm CCRN REVIEW Endocrine & GI SIADH & DI Hypoglycemia DKA & HHNK Hepatic Failure Pancreatitis Bowel Obstruction Abdominal Trauma Acute Lung Injury & Respiratory Distress Syndrome Deborah Poole RN, MS, CCRN In spite of all the technological marvels, patients continue to succumb to injury, illness and complications. One of the most common is the development of acute respiratory failure, ALI and ARDS. Early identification of the development of these conditions and early recognition with interventions to improve tissue oxygenation are related to improved outcomes in the critically ill and injured patient. This session will discuss ALI and ARDS, including the difference between them, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms and nursing implications. Beyond Old Olympus: Neurologic Assessment Nancy Townsend RN, MN, APRNC, CCNS, CCRN No neuron trivia, no mnemonics, no arcane anatomy. Instead, this session presents tips for practical, rapid and thorough neurologic assessment. When and in whom does cranial nerve function need to be assessed? Reflexes? Neurologic vital sign techniques and significance as well as mental status examination and appropriate charting and terminology are described along with the significance of abnormal findings. Is the Glasgow Coma Scale useful and in what setting? What are the signs of impending herniation syndrome? What nursing measures are routine and which are reserved for life-threatening emergencies? MOHEGAN SUN APRIL 20 21, 2009 Y CAESARS JUL NURSING SYMPOSIUM CCRN REVIEW Neurological & Renal Increased Intracranial Pressure Neurological Assessment CNS Disorders Head Trauma Spinal Cord Injuries Renal Physiology Acute Renal Failure Electrolyte Imbalances Acute Coronary Syndromes Deborah Poole RN, MS, CCRN This session will provide the critical care nurse with the most current information necessary to care for the patient with ACS as published by the American Heart Association. These patients, without EKG changes indicative of a myocardial infarction, but who have significant risk for permanent muscle damage. It is imperative for the patient with ACS to be recognized and treated in a timely manner to limit muscle damage and maintain myocardial perfusion. Electrolytes: What s In & What s Out Nancy Townsend RN, MN, APRNC, CCNS, CCRN This session explains the laws of electrolytes, the hierarchy of electrolyte regulation, how to identify, prevent and correct major electrolyte imbalances found in the critically ill patient and how to correlate electrolyte imbalances with acid/base disturbances and the patient s clinical condition. Electrolytes fun, fascinating and finally understandable! CCRN REVIEW Cardiovascular Hypertensive Crisis IHSS, HOCM Cardiac Assessment Hemodynamic Monitoring Myocardial Infarction IABP Cardiac Trauma Shock States Transfusions & Ventilators: A New Twist on ARDS Deborah Poole RN, MS, CCRN It is now known that administration of type-specific blood, high oxygen concentrations, and invasive mechanical ventilation may result in systemic inflammation and the development of ARDS. Improved outcomes for the critically ill patient are associated with early identification of patients at risk and interventions to improve tissue oxygenation. During this session, the relationship between blood transfusions and positive-pressure ventilation will be described and the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of these complications will be discussed. Nosocomial Renal Failure Nancy Townsend RN, MN, APRNC, CCNS, CCRN This session focuses on pathophysiology of acute renal failure in the critically ill patient, the risk factors, identification of the patient at high risk and the strategies to prevent the occurrence of acute renal failure including radio-contrast nephropathy. Acute renal failure as the common second step in the development of multi-system organ failure is also considered along with the nurse s role in halting the progression of this often fatal syndrome before the condition becomes irreversible. The presentation concludes with a brief comparison of dialysis methods and other treatments and their outcomes. CCRN REVIEW Pulmonary & Hematological Respiratory Assessment ABG Interpretation ARF and ARDS Pulmonary Trauma DIC 1A 2A 3A 4A How Do You Mend A Broken Heart? Cardiac Dysfunction in SIRS and Sepsis Deborah Poole RN, MS, CCRN Sepsis and the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) are common conditions in the ICU. The uncontrolled inflammation and its resultant effects on the cardiovascular system present significant challenges for the critical care nurse. This session will offer the most recent information regarding the pathophysiology and evidence-based treatment options for the patient with SIRS and sepsis. 1B 2B 3B 4B Identification & Management of Acid/Base Problems Nancy Townsend RN, MN, APRNC, CCNS, CCRN Acid/base imbalances are extremely common in the critically ill patient and can be in and of themselves life-threatening. The practical application of the Strong Ion Difference and the Anion Gap in the critically ill patient and the importance of the relationship between common electrolyte therapy and the ph are discussed. The primary causes and prevention of these derangements are presented with representative case studies. Also discussed, the appropriate use and common misuse of sodium bicarbonate. 1C 2C 3C 4C 4 Register online: Call Mon. Thurs. 9am 3pm EST
