Includes a comprehensive review. Must show current, unexpired BLS and ACLS cards to register. Students must purchase and read handbook prior to class. Providers are expected to learn to manage 10 core ACLS case scenarios. Includes a review of ACLS procedures. Written and performance evaluations will be given. (12 CEU) Alzheimer's Disease & Other Dementias June 6 Wednesday 6pm-8pm Miner $25.64 This course is designed to assist Health Care Professionals and Guardians to interact more effectively with persons who have Alzheimer s disease or a related disorder. It will also help them to understand the progression of the disease and thus enable them to work more effectively with their patients and families. 5 C.N.A. In-Service Training June 12 & 19 Tuesday 6pm-9pm Miner $56.92 Every certified nursing assistant must complete a minimum of 12 hours of in-service training each calendar year. This course includes the required content in: 1) medical record documentation, 2) resident rights, 3) communication with cognitively impaired clients, 4) blood borne diseases and infection control, 5) legal implications, and 6) medical error prevention and safety. Additional content includes HIV update and CPR offered in other courses. This is a two-session course. (6 CEU) Death & Dying Feb 7 Wednesday 6pm-8pm Miner $25.64 Healthcare providers have a crucial role to play in helping patients with a terminal illness Accept their condition. What is the right thing to say? What do you say when the patient wants to talk about dying. Tips and techniques for all healthcare providers. (2 CEU) Domestic Violence May 16 Wednesday 6pm-8pm Chapman $25.64 This course meets the Florida Board of Nursing Chapter 464 requirement for two hours of continuing education on domestic violence. Course will be instructed by SPARCC (Safe Place & Rape Crisis Center), the only state certified domestic violence center in Sarasota County offering services to victims of domestic violence and rape. Content includes statistics, screening procedures, local resources, client referral, reporting, confidentiality, and the role of the health care worker and mental health professional in dealing with sexual and acquaintance rape. (2 CEU) Ethics, HIPAA, & Confidentiality March 22 Thursday 6pm-8pm Miner $25.64 Learn the importance of ethical practice and confidentiality related to treatment, patient s personal information and healthcare practice. 6 HeartSaver First Aid March 14 Wednesday 5pm-8pm Archbold $ Book SUNCOAST TECHNICAL COLLEGE 2018 suncoast.edu (941) Career Training & Continuing Education Courses A classroom, video based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives. Students learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies. Students must purchase and read handbook prior to attending class. (3 CEU) HIV Update May 9 Wednesday 6pm-8pm Miner $25.64 Many healthcare workers in Florida are required to complete an HIV/AIDS update for license renewal. (2 CEU) How to Deal with Difficult Patients & Families Feb 22 Thursday 6pm-8pm Miner $25.64 IV Therapy Caring for difficult patients and families can be challenging. This course offers tips and techniques for dealing with non-cooperative patients and demanding families while learning to recognize one s own thoughts, feelings and attitudes that can impact the caregiver/ patient relationship. (2 CEU) Feb 27-Apr 10 Tues & Thurs 9am-12am Mayer $ Book This IV therapy class meets the Florida Board of Nursing requirements for expanding the scope of practice for LPN s (Ch. 64B9 Rule ) and is an ideal refresher course for RN s desiring to update their skills and IV knowledge. This 30-hour course includes didactic learning and practicing clinical skills in a lab setting. This 5.5 week class meets twice weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to noon. Current evidence-based practice, calculations, infection control, and age specific concerns related to IV Therapy are stressed. A book is required for this course and can be purchased in media center bookstore. This class is limited to 14 students. For Nurses ONLY. (30 CEU) Managing Pain in the Elderly April 19 Thursday 6pm-8pm Miner $ million American suffer from chronic pain. This class reviews the pathways of pain, categories of pain and assessment techniques for healthcare providers. The primary focus is on the elderly patient, utilizing various assessment tools and tips for assessing pain in the cognitively impaired patient. Content also covers cultural aspects and management of pain. (2 CEU) 6

7 Medication Error & Prevention March 7 Wednesday 6pm-8pm Miner $25.64 This course provides an approved mandatory two-hour requirement by the Florida legislature in medical errors prevention for all healthcare practitioners (Ch (7) FS. This course will include a study of root-cause analysis, error reduction and prevention and patient safety. Includes factors that impact the occurrence of medical errors, recognizing error-prone situations, processes to improve patient outcomes, responsibilities for reporting, and safety needs of special populations, and public education. (2 CEU) Nursing & the Law April 12 Thursday 6pm-8pm Miner $25.64 This course addresses the legislative purpose for the Nurse Practice Act, specific laws and rules related to nursing, requirements for CE, ethical and legal practices, the process of discipline, and creating a professional plan within the limits of the law. (2 CEU) Nutrition & Hydration of the Elderly Patient January 25 Thursday 6pm-8pm Miner $25.64 As a person ages, food and nutritional needs change. Older patients do not burn calories as quickly but still require a good diet and adequate hydration. They need more vitamins, minerals, and protein when they are sick and more fiber to prevent constipation. This class will explore the nutritional and hydration needs of the elderly, discuss the loss of taste and smell and identify signs and symptoms of poor nutrition and hydration. Assessment and treatment techniques will be discussed. (2 CEU) Recognition of Impairment in the Workplace May 22 Tuesday 6pm-8pm Walker $25.64 This class meets the FL Board of Nursing requirement: The new 2 CE requirement for the Recognizing Impairment in the Workplace course becomes effective August 1, 2017, then every other biennium thereafter. The purpose of this course is to help nurses in the state of Florida identify and support coworkers who may be afflicted with workplace impairment. At the end of the course, the individual will be able to identify signs and symptoms of the impaired employee, be able to discuss some of the steps employers have implemented to promote patient and public safety and provide assistance to the employee, be able to identify and discuss steps to file a report of an impaired nurse, discuss mandatory reporting laws, and be able to identify and discuss treatment options and programs for impaired practitioners. (2 CEU) The New Addiction: Synthetic Drugs May 8 Tuesday 6pm-8pm Walker $25.64 Synthetic illicit drugs are dangerous and potent. Extremely toxic chemicals are added and the effects of these drugs can be deadly. K2 for example is a legal form of marijuana frequently abused, especially by young people. It is a combination of dried herbs sprayed with a substance similar to marijuana and marketed as incense. When combined with other drugs and sometimes alcohol, serious injury can occur. This class will educate healthcare providers on the use, signs, symptoms and care options of synthetic drug use including K2 and bath salts. The program prepares students for IT professional careers and also for the Cisco Certified Entry-Level Technician (CCENT) and Cisco Certified Network Associate Route Switch (CCNA) certification exams. The academy's four sessions emphasize theoretical concepts and practical applications while providing hands-on labs that are needed to design, install, operate, and maintain networks in small to medium businesses, as well as enterprise and service provider environments. The course is based on the new Cisco Certification standards. Labs include state of the art products (routers, switches, wireless), software and computers as well as use of the Packet Tracer. Instruction is conducted by a Sarasota County School District Network Engineer, experienced in current networking challenges and solutions. A discount on the CCNA exam is available to students who complete all four classes and achieve a score of at least 75% on each semesters final exam. *For detailed descriptions of Cisco courses, contact Student Services at (941) x EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION The Early Childhood Education program prepares students to understand the ages and stages of child development and to plan meaningful learning experiences for young children from birth through 8 years of age. Students will learn competencies concerning the care of young children in the Early Childhood Industry. Students model best practice teaching techniques with the children at Suncoast Technical College in our Tech Tots Laboratory Preschool or in other approved community child care centers. Observation and supervision of work experience with young children in a school or community laboratory setting are an integral part of this program. To achieve Early Childhood Professional Certificate status, a student must successfully complete 480 hours of direct work with children aged five years or younger. In addition, they will spend 120 hours completing classroom coursework. Students completing this program are eligible for a higher wage and/or supervisory positions in the child care field. Suncoast recommends that students obtain certification in infant/child CPR and first aid for initial employment.

Accountants analyze, record, and interpret facts and figures. A successful accounting career demands diverse skills and high ethical standards. In addition to accounting and software knowledge, employees must have skills in communications, organization, adaptability, and problem solving. Administrative Office Specialist Length: 10 Months Cost: $4,521 This program prepares students for employment as administrative assistants or as administrative office support staff. Content, including extensive training in Microsoft Office, digital publishing, social media design, proofreading, and basic accounting, fully prepares students for administrative duties in today s business environment. Employment opportunities exist in small businesses, corporations, and government agencies. Advanced Esthetics Length: 7.5 Months Cost: $3,993 Students entering this program seek future employment within the spa industry, medical offices for dermatologic and plastic surgeons and the expanding med/spa industry. This program is a continuation of the Facials Skin Care Specialist program. It will update skills incorporating new trends in the field of esthetics. There is a rising consumer demand in this region of Florida for personalized care and therapeutic treatment by highly skilled skin care professionals. Advanced Manufacturing & Production Technology Length: 7.5 Months Cost: $2,543 This program prepares students for entry into the advanced manufacturing industry. Content emphasizes beginning skills key to the success of working in the automation and manufacturing industry. Students gain an understanding of technology and the concept of Design for Manufacturing, study workplace safety and workplace organization, workplace communication skills, and basic machine assembly, fabrication, and operation. Air Conditioning, Refrigeration & Heating Technology I Length: 7 Months Cost: $3,384 This program provides classroom and lab experiences that enable students to become proficient in the installation, repair, and maintenance of residential & commercial A/C, refrigeration, and heating systems. The knowledge, training, and tools received, will prepare them to pass the Environmental Protection Agency certification test and begin their career. Applied Cybersecurity Length: 8 Months Cost: $3,388 This program prepares students to enter the physical and digital security fields. Computer, server, wired and wireless network security topics are covered. From reporting disaster recovery and business continuity plans, forensics, encryption and law, to hardening operating systems, students will learn the essentials to move into this exciting career path. This program provides students with the knowledge needed to sit for the CompTia Security+ exam. Prior to entering into this program, students must hold the CompTia A+ certification. It is highly recommended that they hold the CompTia Network+ certification as well. Students not holding the Network+ certification will complete it prior to the Security+. Linux+ certification is available to those who hold both the CompTia A+ and Network+ certifications, time permitting.

13 Automotive Collision Technology Length: 1 Year Cost: $5,849 This program prepares students for employment as automotive body repairers and refinishers to work in dealerships, body shops, or paint facilities. Practical Nursing Length: 1 Year Cost: $7,059 This program prepares students to plan and administer nursing care to patients in hospitals, extended care facilities, physicians offices, healthcare agencies, and private homes. This care includes providing for the physical and emotional needs of the patient, administering medications, providing therapeutic treatments, and assisting with rehabilitation. Clinical experiences make up over 50 percent of the total program hours. Students must submit to drug testing prior to clinical placement.
