3 Imperial Valley College Division of Nursing Education and Health Technologies Spring 2010 Nursing 211 Simulator Rotation Schedule Rules of Engagement (Appropriate Simulation Conduct) The Patient is real. All skills must be preformed appropriately, and dialogue must be appropriate for a nurse patient relationship. Be prepared: Have all questions completed and think through all potential roles of the simulation. All participants must wear lab coats or uniform with ID badge. Support only when requested. Do not forward or input information unless asked and/or are directly part of the simulation. Follow the direction of the primary nurse. If they ask for your opinion then you can give it. No torpedoes: Play the role to the best of your ability, negativity and argumentative behavior will not be tolerated. This experience is for learning and should be fun and informative. Mistakes are warranted and necessary. Simulations are always moving forward, unless the facilitator calls a teaching moment. A teaching moment is period of time that is used to explain or explore a problem encountered by the student or team. Never discuss performance outside the simulation. Confidentiality is exceptionally important in nursing practice and is a valuable component in this experience. Remember do not ruin a colleague s experience, what goes on in the simulation, stays in the simulation. 3
4 Roles Primary nurse: Care provider, head of the team for this patient and the nursing process. They may delegate tasks as needed. Communicate with patient, family and other healthcare workers. You need to be an advocate for the patient. Charge nurse: Helper in scenario, directed by primary nurse. Duties might include assistance in following the nursing process and communication with physicians, other health-care staff, and family. Med nurse: Prepares medications, checks and assures medications safely administered, including documentation. They need to follow the nursing process. Treatment nurse: Provides all treatments, assists in patient care as directed by primary nurse and assist in following the nursing process. Recorder: Document the process and flow of the scenario. They must be able to provide information to other participants during the simulation and in the debriefing session. Family member: Role as directed. This role is a crucial component in learning communication skills. Treat the simulator as if you were a family member or better. Pharmacist: Be available to utilize reference materials in support of administration of medication. Check dosage calculation. Monitor: Evaluate the simulation and performance of team-member. This role is valuable asset in debriefing. Ancillary Staff: Roles as directed. Help with setup and tear-down of scenario with the help of all the team-members. 4
