2 CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION This 21st Annual Winter Conference on Emergency Medicine is designed for emergency physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, as well as out-of-hospital providers who see patients that need immediate care in the Emergency Department or Urgent Care setting. A wide variety of topics pertinent to the practice of the emergency care provider will be presented in lectures, case presentations, and interactive sessions. The goal of this conference is to present and critically assess recent advances and key topics in emergency medicine and to enhance the knowledge of providers, resulting in improved patient care. Content for this year s conference has been selected using extensive needs assessment data including past participant topic requests, clinical expert input, current practice guidelines, and Symposia Medicus on-line needs assessment survey of healthcare professionals involved in emergency medicine. An outstanding faculty has been selected based on their individual areas of expertise, their ability to communicate first-hand knowledge to others, and their commitment to address issues of current concern to attendees. Conference OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this conference, you should be able to: improve your approach to managing pediatric patients with fractures and non-traumatic orthopedic emergencies better apply the most up-to-date information in Emergency Department diagnostic testing, including ultrasound, MRI and ECG use appropriate clinical interventions in managing the airway improve your trauma management of cardiogenic pulmonary edema recognize and treat emerging infections better manage the patient with acute headaches and head injuries more accurately assess emergencies in the elderly better formulate individualized plans of action for procedural sedation ACCREDITATION This educational activity was planned and produced in accordance with the ACCME Essentials and Standards relating to continuing medical and nursing education. is accredited by the Accreditation Council on Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. is accredited as a provider of continuing education for nurses by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC). CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT Physicians designates this educational activity for a maximum of 18 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Application has been made to the American College of Emergency Physicians for ACEP Category 1 credit. Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Physician Assistants The American Academy of Physician Assistants accepts Category 1 CME approval from organizations accredited by ACCME. Nurse Practitioners/Nurses The ANCC contact hours awarded for the completion of this educational activity is 18. Provider is also approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #CEP2335, for 21.6 contact hours. Pharmacology Credit for Prescriptive Authority A maximum of 3.75 hours in pharmacology credit for prescriptive authority may be earned by attending this educational conference. Sessions awarding pharmacology credit for prescriptive authority are denoted with an Rx. ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION SESSIONS Small group sessions will be held Friday afternoon. These Round Table Discussion Sessions, organized to provide an opportunity for greater participant/faculty interaction, will give you an opportunity to discuss subjects relating to your particular areas of interest. You are encouraged to bring cases or issues you are confronting in your clinical practice to discuss during these sessions. Educational Resources Each registrant will receive an extensive conference syllabus containing pertinent information on each topic presented. In an effort to reduce the environmental impact of printing on paper, this syllabus is now available on CD. You can request your syllabus on CD on our conference registration form. If you request a syllabus on CD and bring your laptop to the conference, please be aware that there are no electrical outlets at the conference tables. Make sure your laptop is fully charged each day. Beach Front $330/night Located in north and south low rise buildings, with terrace, offering direct access to the beach. * 1 Bedroom $360/night Located in main tower. All suites include balconies with sea Ocean Suite views and living room area with couch (not pullout). A 30-minute break has been allotted in our conference schedule on Saturday for those needing to check out. Two nights deposit must accompany the reservation form. The balance of lodging payment, as well as any incidental charges, is due to the hotel upon checkout. The hotel accepts most major credit cards. Per our hotel group contract, hotel cancellations must be made in writing to Symposia Medicus and you will receive a full refund of hotel deposit if postmarked by December 9, Between December 10, 2009 and January 6, 2010, one night s deposit is forfeited.
