The skills and abilities that are learned in this program will prepare you for a medical office administration career. Salaries for many entry-level positions can be in the range of $30,000 annually. A majority of positions will offer fulltime opportunities and benefit packages. The Medical Office Administration degree can be earned online, on-campus (Hybrid), or in a combination method. Certificate Programs Medical Office Administration The MOA certificate prepares individuals for basic skills necessary for entrylevel employment, such as keyboarding, medical terminology, and medical office software applications. This certificate can be completed in three semesters (one year). Career Opportunities Medical Secretary: Medical Secretaries are responsible for a wide range of administrative tasks to ensure the office they are managing functions smoothly. These tasks can vary by location but typically include: Checking in patients at the front desk Answering the phone Scheduling patients for the proper appointment Interviewing patients for case histories in advance of appointments Compiling medical records and charts Process insurance payments Operating computer software and office equipment Transferring lab results to the appropriate clinician Maintaining supplies and appearance for the office Medical Billing Specialist: Responsible for collecting, posting, and managing account payments. Responsible for submitting claims and following up with insurance companies. Medical Billing Specialists work closely with the billing supervisor and/or office manager. Associate in Applied Science Degree Medical Office Administration A25310 This curriculum prepares individuals for employment in medical and other health care-related offices. Coursework will include medical terminology; information systems; office management; medical coding, billing, and insurance; legal and ethical issues; and formatting and word processing. Students will learn administrative and support functions and develop skills applicable in medical environments. Employment opportunities are available in medical and dental offices, hospitals, insurance companies, laboratories, medical supply companies, and other health care-related organizations. Health Unit Coordinator: A Health Unit Coordinator helps to keep the facility organized and coordinates communication between patients and medical staff. As a coordinator, you may greet and check in patients, schedule appointments and/or procedures, and perform clerical duties. Other days you might compile patients charts, transcribe physicians orders, and prepare birth or death certificates. Much of your work is performed under supervision of registered physicians or nurses. Medical Office Receptionist: The Medical Office Receptionist works collaboratively with all clinical services staff in support of direct patient services. They perform a variety of tasks to medical facilities. Essential duties include providing excellent customer/ patient services via phone and in person, referring callers to the appropriate departments, making appointments for patients according to established protocols, and assisting patients with forms.
