Winter Webinar Series Let s Talk School Nursing! 2015 Winter Webinar Series Date January 14, 2015 January 28, 2015 February 11, 2015 March 11, 2015 Webinar Title School Nursing of Tomorrow Starts Today A Culture of Health and Care Coordination Pills, Shots and Drugs Oh My! Medication Administration in the School Setting So Much To Do What Do I Do Next? Setting Priorities and a Look at Competencies To Delegate or Not to Delegate That is the Question! Nursing Delegation in the School Setting So Much To Do What Do I Do Next? So Much to Do What Do I Do Next? 2015 Winter Webinar Series Cheryl Resha Associate Professor, Nursing Department Southern Connecticut State University Sally Schoessler Director of Nursing Education for the National Association of School Nurses Priorities The School Health Office is a busy place! Priorities At one time, all of this might be taking place: A student wants to talk to you about her friend who has been smoking A student whisper to you My mouth feels hot A newly diagnosed student needs their routine blood glucose check before snack The principal is at the door and wants to know if you ll speak at the next faculty meeting on bloodborne pathogens A student comes in with his nose bleeding profusely A parent is on the phone - wants to discuss the school s bullying initiatives A teacher is at the door asking you to screen a student s vision

Setting Priorities is Important Objectives Order tasks according to level of acuity: 1. A student whisper to you My mouth feels hot 2. A student comes in with his nose bleeding 3. profusely A newly diagnosed student needs their routine blood glucose check before snack 4. A student wants to talk to you about her friend who has been smoking 5. A teacher is at the door asking you to screen a student s vision 6. The principal is at the door and wants to know if you ll speak at the next faculty meeting on bloodborne pathogens 7. A parent is on the phone - wants to discuss the school s bullying initiatives Outline What do I do first?!? SETTING PRIORITIES IN SCHOOL NURSING CARE Prioritization What does YOUR day usually look like? In daily nursing practice, nursing prioritization is the decision by a nurse as to which nurse patient interaction to address first among many potentially competing requirements and options (Lake, Moss & Duke, 2012, 377)

Consider looking at what s ahead: The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities. Stephen Covey Setting Priorities Setting Daily Priorities Emergencies (life threatening) Scheduled events needing RN training (treatments, condition management) Impact on population (infectious disease) Foundational activities to prepare you for a smoother day in the future. Prevention, Policies, health education/promotion Documentation a daily must! Long Term Prioritization Population Focused ABCs life threatening urgency Need of nursing skills Magnitude of situation/concern (frequency/duration/scope) Severity if problem not solved Impact on student outcomes Impact on population Resources available (including staffing, time) State laws & regulations (Lake, Moss & Duke, 2009; Shuster, 2012) (Frieden, 2010)

Setting Priorities Create Tools & Strategies that work for you Priority #1 Competency An expected level of performance that integrates knowledge, skill, abilities and judgment, based on scientific knowledge and expectations for nursing practice. How do I measure my performance as a school nurse? AN OVERVIEW OF COMPETENCIES IN SCHOOL NURSING Specific, measurable elements that interpret, explain and facilitate practical use of the standard (ANA/NASN, 2011) Institute of Medicine 2011 Report recommends: Accrediting bodies, schools of nursing, health care organizations, and continuing competency educators from multiple health professions should collaborate to ensure that nurses and nursing students and faculty continue their education and engage in lifelong learning to gain the competencies needed to provide care for diverse populations across the lifespan. ( IOM, 2011; Kowalski, 2012) Benner s Application (modified) Developing School Nurse Proficient School Nurse Exemplary School Nurse

Bringing it all together! HOW TO USE COMPETENCIES IN YOUR PRACTICE OF SCHOOL NURSING
