1 Context Assignment Title: Supporting and protecting adults This unit aims to develop your understanding of the differing needs of people who use health and social care services. You will gain understanding of how to develop supportive relationships that respect individual rights, and also an understanding of how such relationships can be abused within health and social care contexts, and the strategies that have been developed to minimise this abuse. You will investigate types of commonly described abuse, the indicators that abuse may be occurring, and also the potential for abuse within health and social care services. You will examine predisposing factors that can lead to individuals becoming vulnerable, and gain understanding of strategies and working practices developed to minimise abuse, including legislation, policies and procedures. Task Overview This assignment will be useful in your preparation for a variety of careers in health and social care, as you will develop an understanding of the needs of individuals, in particular those at risk, and how they can be protected and supported. You will complete a range of activities involving you preparing staff training documents, and providing information and advice on the various aspects of supporting and protecting adults in different health and social care contexts. Understand working strategies to minimise abuse. Refer to the assignment task sheet and the criteria tick sheet to ensure that you meet the standards for pass, merit and distinction for Unit 11. There are FIVE tasks to complete for this unit.

2 Assignment Task Sheet Task Activities Assessment criteria 1 Developing supportive relationships Refer to pages of text book 2 to help you. Participate in a role play, producing a script as evidence. a) Role play - You need to participate in a five minute (approx) role play activity based in a health or social care setting of your choice (e.g. hospital, care home, nursery, day care centre etc.). You should play the part of a professional (e.g. a doctor, nurse, care assistant etc.) and the role play should demonstrate an example of respecting an individual s rights. For example, a service user choosing the type of activity they do or do not participate in. P1 + Witness statement Individual rights include: the rights to be respected; treated equally and not discriminated against; treated as an individual; treated in a dignified way; allowed privacy; protected from danger and harm; allowed access to information about themselves; able to communicate using their preferred methods of communication and language; cared for in a way that meets their needs, takes account of their choices and protects them; diversity and differences in culture, religion, race, disability, sexuality, beliefs, behaviour, eating and hygiene habits. Your role play should be backed up with a brief explanation of why it is important to respect these rights aim to write up to a page of A4 on this. Evidence required for P1 includes: a copy of your script, your explanation on A4 and a witness statement of your participation within the role play signed by your assessor. Write a brief magazine article. b) Within a health or social care setting supportive relationships are imperative to enhance the life experiences of people receiving services. From your role play, and through your own experience or research, write a brief magazine article suitable for a health and social care industry magazine to explain why supportive relationships are important and how they can enhance the life experiences of people receiving health or social care services. Ensure your article looks professional and has at least one relevant image. M1

3 Produce a leaflet. c) Many organisations/individuals work together in multi-disciplinary teams. Produce an informative leaflet aimed at health and social care professionals to explain: - How these partnerships can help to minimise the risks of abuse occurring in a health or social care context - How this will help the vulnerable adults in their care - Are there any other issues? D1 Ensure you use examples such as the humanistic approach; helping, enabling; empowering, giving choices; maintaining privacy, maintaining confidentiality; advocacy; promoting rights; non-judgemental attitude, to evaluate the role of supportive relationships in enhancing the life experiences of individuals receiving health and social care services. 2 Types of abuse and indicators of abuse in health and social care contexts Refer to pages of text book 2 to help you. Create an informative poster aimed at staff working in a day care centre for adults with special needs. Vulnerable adults may experience abuse which may manifest itself in different Forms. Create a PowerPoint presentation. a) Imagine you are working as a carer with vulnerable adults at a residential home. In all health and social care settings, there is the potential for abuse to occur. In a staff training PowerPoint presentation aimed at fellow workers at the home, include the following points: - A description of the potential for abuse in health and social care contexts and use examples for each situation e.g. bullying within care services, invasions of privacy, abuse by carers, system abuse, abuse by service users, abuse of carers - Identify the predisposing factors which make abuse more likely to happen b) Choose four different health or social care contexts, e.g. community, residential care, domiciliary care, caring relationships and relationships involving power. For each, include an analysis the potential for abuse in each of the four contexts in your training presentation. P4 M2 Refer to the factors affecting the potential for abuse and predisposing factors in your analysis. Ensure you relate specifically to each of the four contexts and consider each one individually to produce a detailed analysis. 4 Working strategies to minimise abuse Refer to pages of text book 2 to help you. Produce a detailed report.

5 The residential home for vulnerable adults referred t o in Task 3 is looking to ensure that working practices and strategies to minimise abuse are in place. You are required to produce a detailed report aimed at health and social care professionals, in order to describe strategies and working practices used to minimise abuse. P5 You should aim to describe the following information in your report: - Strategies: Protection of Vulnerable Adults Scheme (POVA); Care Homes Regulation; National Service framework; multi-agency working, working in partnership with service users, between professionals and within organisations; decision making processes and forums, organisational policies and training - Procedures for protection: needs assessment; care planning cycle; person-centred practices; written and oral communications; use of IT in sharing information between professionals; anti-oppressive practice; anti-discriminatory practice 5 Working strategies to minimise abuse Refer to pages of text book 2 to help you. Produce an A4 information sheet aimed at staff working in a health and social care setting of your choice (such as a hospital, nursery, residential care home etc). a) Using the table template below, identify the legislation, policies and procedures that protect adults receiving health and social care services. An example has been included for each section to get you started. You must add all other relevant policies, procedures and legislations to the contents of the table using the text book and web links provided. In addition you must briefly describe what each policy, procedure and legislation is. b) For the merit, you must explain how legislation, policies and procedures contribute to the protection of vulnerable adults in the third column.
