2 General Information Conference description and goals Mayo Continuing Nursing Education is pleased to present an important conference planned by and for all advanced practice nurses. The conference is designed to address issues around advanced nursing practice related to care of patients of all ages. This year s conference will focus on clinical topics specific to advanced nursing practice with tracks designed for clinical nurse specialists, adult and pediatric nurse practitioners, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and certified nurse midwives. A variety of pharmacology topics will be included. The goals of the conference are to: Provide education for advanced practice nurses to promote and support continual advancement of evidence into practice. Identify resources to assist advanced practice nurses in serving patients and families throughout their life spans and in different settings. Provide networking opportunities for advanced practice nurses. Featured faculty Mary L. Chesney, PhD, RN, CNP, is a clinical associate professor and director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program at the University of Minnesota s School of Nursing. Her professional career has spanned a variety of nursing roles including staff nurse, nurse educator, pediatric nurse practioner, primary care provider, and various nursing leadership roles. Her teaching, clinical, and scholarship focus areas include health policy, utilization of RNs and APRNs within new models of care, and care of children with special healthcare needs. Chesney currently serves as health policy chair for the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practioners (NAPNAP), NAPNAP s representative on the national Nurse Practioner Roundtable, and president of the Minnesota APRN Coalition. She was recently appointed as APRN representative to Minnesota s new Action Coalition sponsored by the Future of Nursing Campaign for Action. Chesney has served in a variety of appointments made by the Minnesota Legislature and Minnesota Department of Health. Barbara St. Marie, PhD, RN, ANP, GNP, is the supervisor of pain and palliative care at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, Minnesota. Her dissertation study was on the Coexistence of Addiction and Pain in People Receiving Methadone for Addiction. St. Marie has worked in pain management nursing throughout her career and has extensively published in the areas of pain and addiction, pain assessment, pain management in the elder patient, and epidural and intrathecal analgesia. St. Marie is the editor of the first and second edition of the Core Curriculum for Pain Management Nursing. She has served as reviewer of a Treatment Improvement Protocol entitled, Managing Chronic Pain in People With or in Recovery From Substance Use Disorders, requested by the Federal Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, and produced by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. St. Marie speaks throughout the world on issues of pain management nursing. She was awarded the 2011 Minnesota Advanced Practice Nurse of the Year through the March of Dimes. Date and location This conference will be held Thursday and Friday, October 17 and 18, 2013, at the Siebens Building, Mayo Clinic, 100 Second Avenue SW, Rochester, Minnesota.
3 Intended audience The conference is designed for adult and pediatric advanced practice nurses, including nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and certified nurse midwives, physician assistants, students, and other healthcare professionals. Continuing education credit Mayo Continuing Nursing Education is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Participants can earn up to 12 nursing contact hours (accredited) for the conference. ***Advanced practice nursing pharmacotherapeutic continuing education hours are available. Registration Registration deadline: Thursday, September 26, 2013 Conference registration fee: $225 Student rate: $155 Please bring proof of current student status to the conference (for example, a copy of your student identification card). The registration fee includes all conference materials, breakfast, break refreshments, and lunch on Thursday, and breakfast and break refreshments on Friday. Registrations cannot be shared. Pre-registration is required and preferred by Thursday, September 26, Registrations received after September 26th will be accepted on a space-available basis. Cancellations If you cancel your participation in this conference, your registration fee, less an administrative fee, will be refunded when notification is received by Mayo Continuing Nursing Education before Thursday, September 26, 2013 (fax#: or cne@mayo.edu). No refunds will be made on or after September 26, Mayo Continuing Nursing Education reserves the right to cancel or postpone any conference due to unforeseen circumstances. In the unlikely event Mayo Continuing Nursing Education must cancel or postpone this conference, Mayo Continuing Nursing Education will refund the registration fee, but is not responsible for any related costs, charges, or expenses to participants, including fees assessed by airline/travel/lodging agencies.
