6 Pg 6 CITY INTERNATIONAL HOSPTIAL, VIETNAM By Harris Ismail and Mohanaa Letchman Naidu, Lecturers, Parkway College Parkway College started conducting courses for the City International Hospital (CIH) in Vietnam since October City International Hospital is based in the Hi-Tech Healthcare Park in Ho Chi Minh City, the economic centre of Vietnam. This 320-bed tertiary care hospital prides itself as the hospital with the latest medical technology, imaging equipment and extensive facilities. The participants shared their experiences and exchanged ideas. The learning was contextualised accordingly and the trainers adopted teaching methodologies that made learning meaningful and connected with the learners through collaborative learning, discussions and role plays. The training emphasised the importance of nursing values, clinical governance, nursing communication, documentation and nursing standards. It was learning from a new dimension. The nurses were well informed that outdated doctrines are dangerous. They competently demonstrated skills in intravenous cannulation and organised adult resuscitation carried out in code blue drills. Part of the training was focused on specialty programme in perioperative and critical care nursing. The primary intention was to equip the multidiscipline-trained nurse managers with the relevant knowledge and skills to manage specialty units. The specialty component emphasized expertise in operating room techniques and surgical care of the critically ill. Nurses practising endotracheal tube intubation. As trainers, we were encouraged by their enthusiasm for learning and also with the energy and commitment to deliverg the best care that City International Hospital can offer. The nurses found themselves greatly benefitting from the training experience. Nurses with the trainers at the venue reception. A training lecture session at City International Hospital. Nurses participating in classroom discussion.
7 MEDIACORP SOAPBOX DERBY 2013 ENTRY RACE ME TO THE STARS! Pg 7 By Muhammad Khairulnizar Bin Azman, Year 2 student, BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography and Imaging We wanted a challenge and something thrilling to do during our school holidays and hence participated in Mediacorp s Race me to the Stars Soapbox Derby We formed a team of 4 and called our group name, Bros of Bushong which was inspired by the name of the author of our core textbook in radiography. In short, we called ourselves BoB. The whole process of conceptualizing, drawing, getting materials, building and finalizing the soapbox took about one month. We went to industrial estates, playing rag-and-bone man to search for discarded materials to be used. We used a wooden plank, reinforced with steel, as the main frame or in racing terms chassis of our soapbox. Our soapbox was made from scratch and it was an interesting experience. We encountered numerous obstacles during the building process. The main components needed to be strong yet light. We had to test every component to ensure it is structurally sound. Through sheer determination, team BoB pressed on and added last minute reinforcements. Anti-clockwise from top-right: The students building their soapbox from scratch; Painting of the soapbox; Team BoB holding the certificate of participation; The finished soapbox before the race. During the race day, it was raining and we were the 4th team to race. It was stressful as the ground was very slippery and our tyres did not have much grip. It did not help at all that we lacked wet-weather experience. Unfortunate but interestingly, most teams did not make it to the finish line, including last year s winner and ourselves. We only managed to travel down the initial slope and we crashed! Our soapbox broke into 10 million pieces, figuratively speaking, along with our dream of making it to the chequered flag. It was definitely an enriching and eye-opening experience; working together through the joys and hardships. We learnt about our strengths and weaknesses and that we each had something to offer; be it labour or entertainment, we got along very well and this bond was priceless. It was a band of brothers (BoB) experience.
8 Pg 8 ALUMNI SHARING SESSIONS FOR GRADUATES By Sue Goghari, Assistant Manager, Parkway College Four Sharing Sessions were held at each of the Parkway Pantai Hospitals (Parkway East Hospital, Gleneagles Hospital, Mount Elizabeth Hospital and Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital) during the months of August and September A total of 32 nurses attended these sessions which account to about 55% of the total number of nurses who graduated from Parkway College in Those who could not attend the sessions were either on duty, on annual leave or were attending in-house training. It was a good platform for these nurses to share their feedback which were very positive and fruitful. They have unanimously requested that these Sharing Sessions be held annually.
