BACKGROUND 2.1 Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group have agreed that the Trust can flex the monthly numbers of beds available in Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust community hospitals in order to make best use of available capacity and to have greater numbers of community hospital beds available at points in the year when pressures on acute beds are historically greater. 2.2 Aims of the reprofiling exercise include: to establish a profile for available community hospital beds which correlates to the historical pattern of demand for beds across the healthcare system in Somerset; to make the smallest number of stepped changes to the monthly numbers of community hospital beds to be available, and affecting the smallest number of locations. 2.3 Following the summer months the bed availability will increase as follows: Hospital Summer bed November and availability December Bridgwater Burnham on Sea Chard Crewkerne Dene Barton Frome Minehead Shepton Mallet South Petherton Wellington West Mendip Williton Wincanton Total November Public Board - 3 -

4 2.4 In line with previous Trust Board papers, each recommended ward establishment has been developed and agreed with the relevant ward sister utilising national best practice and professional judgment. 2.5 The attached table details recommended changes to the ward establishments for Bridgwater, Crewkerne, Dene Barton, West Mendip and Wincanton to reflect the increase in bed numbers. 2.6 In line with current practice the proposed establishments are core establishments and the nurse in charge is expected to use her professional judgement to amend these accordingly based on patient dependency and acuity, and current bed occupancy. 3. NEXT STEPS 3.1 The Board is asked to approve the revised ward establishments for these four wards. DIRECTOR OF NURSING AND PATIENT SAFETY November Public Board - 4 -
