1 IDEAL Integrated Directorate of Education and Learning Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust October 2009 Issue 15 For all the latest education and learning news, events and courses in SUHT Leadership Launch SUHT s Leadership Strategy was launched on September 22nd in Lecture Room A, Education Centre. Around fifty of our senior colleagues drawn from all Divisions and all disciplines attended and we were delighted to see Merril Bate, Deputy Head of Leadership Development at NHS South Central, our Chairman John Trewby, Judy Gillow, Director of Nursing who had all made time to attend. Replete with coffee and delicious cookies (in lieu of lunch), they listened to CEO Mark Hackett talk about the intrinsically personal qualities of leadership and the crucial importance of effective leadership for a complex organisation such as SUHT. Jo Mountfield, Director of Education, then outlined the background to the launch, highlighting the strategy s contents, particularly the Leadership Map and its usefulness for PDPs when undertaking appraisals and the What s New? section where all the latest Leadership & Management news and opportunities are posted. Finally Caroline Nesbitt, Leadership Development, then talked in more detail about the current programmes, Coaching for Excellence and 360 O feedback as well as developments in the pipeline. For further information, go to: uk/education/educationhome.aspx Click on Leadership Map to also access What s New & Leadership Strategy. Radio Chat Show There I was a couple of weeks ago, happily doing my day job when I got a call from the Communications Team who needed help. Would I promote the Hospital Open Day, in particular the stand J for jobs and careers on the radio? Not one to shy away from a challenge of course I said yes. On the day four of us arrived at Unity 101 in Southampton where microphones and chairs were strategically placed, sound tests carried out and a run through on how it all works received. It was at this point they mentioned of course as this is a live show expect s, texts or telephone calls which was a bit daunting. However, at 3pm we went live, with a lead representative fielding questions and aiding the discussion we gave out as much information as possible, answered a number of s and calls and in no time at all the hour had come to a close. Though a huge sigh of relief was given by all, it was an enjoyable experience and one I would happily repeat. Carol Clark, Career Support Coordinator IDEAL - October

2 Putting Evidence into Practice 1st Regional Conference a success Over 160 NHS staff members and academics from the South Central Region took part in the 1st Regional Conference on Putting Evidence into Practice (PEP) on the 24th of September Organised by the School of Health Sciences and Social Work at the University of Portsmouth and funded by NHS Education South Central, the one day conference covered a variety of topics on evidence-based practice from its history, to current use of clinical guidelines, to practical sessions on searching NHS Evidence, as well as interactive exercises on understanding research and undertaking change management. The participants, from a wide range of backgrounds as Allied Healthcare Professionals and Healthcare Scientists, found the day truly invigorating due to the opportunities to meet and network with so many other like-minded colleagues and also due to the varied programme. One participant commented that it is inspiring to see the interest as well as sharing and learning together and discovering new resources and developments. While others mentioned that the day was very enjoyable and informative thought provoking! and an excellent day (brain hurts now) but learned a lot. The venue of The Rose Bowl, Southampton helped to build an open atmosphere where participants could mingle and enjoy views of the sunny cricket pitch. For those who were unable to attend the conference, the main presentation handouts are available on the PEP website at under conference in the menu. The PEP course will continue to run this year and is currently free to all NHS staff including Nurses, Medical Practitioners, Allied Healthcare Professionals and Healthcare Scientists. The course calendar with venues across the South Central patch and varied dates can be found on the PEP website at Book early to secure your place! 2009 Annual Evidence Update on osteoarthritis Dr Lisa Roberts, Arthritis Research Campaign Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy within the Trust, has recently completed an Annual Evidence Update on Osteoarthritis. They can be found at the NHS Evidence website featured in the previous edition of IDEAL Times: and the complete osteoarthritis update can be found at: aspx?resid=324808&tabid=289&catid=1013 For further details please contact Lisa Roberts via L.C.Roberts@soton.ac.uk Open University Pre-Registrations Nurses There have been five new students recruited onto the programme which started September 09, making a total of 21 nurses undertaking the programme. It is now online where you can register for future online and/or printed copies. NESC Education is for educators, mentors and trainers who support the learning and development of healthcare staff and students across NHS South Central. The aims of the magazine is to share best practice and learn from others, debate workforce issues to accelerate raising the standards of education and training. The magazine is very much focused on what is happening in trusts, PCTS, GP and Dental Practices across our region. While it is targeted at educators, mentors and trainers it will be of interest to anybody looking to education and training to solve a workforce solution. For more information or to register, please visit: nesc_magazine.aspx The School of Health Sciences hosted the Student Nurse Badge Ceremony on 22 September where Rosemary Chable, Associate Director of Nursing, presented the award for outstanding practice to Susie Zaborszky. Susie was nominated for the award by C4 on Cancer Care for the development of an electronic referral template for district nurse referrals. The ward said that this template is a very useful tool that will bring great benefit to the ward nursing team and that they wanted to recognise the contribution that she (Susie) has made to the ward that will outlast her time with us. Congratulations Susie. 6 IDEAL - October 2009

8 Hospital Heroes Award funds mugs for the Anaesthetic Department The Anaesthetic Department were proud to be awarded the Hospital Heroes Infection Prevention Award earlier this year. After some discussion about how to spend our prize money, we decided to design our own department coffee mugs. One of the anaesthetic trainees, Dr Beena Varghese, submitted eight different designs to the department for approval and after a vote we chose a blue one with our own Shackleton emblem and space for a name underneath. We put in a bulk order from a local business and now every member of the anaesthetic department has their own Shackleton coffee mug with their name on it. It has created a surprising amount of good feeling, and so the Consultant Staff have decided to continue this by funding a department mug for everyone joining our department. New trainees have been very pleasantly surprised to be presented with their mug on arrival and frequently comment, rather embarrassingly, that it is the first time they have ever been welcomed and given any type of small gift when joining a department! Many thanks to Jo Mountfield and Anita Esser who run this scheme, and who gave us the incentive to do this. Caroline Marshall, Consultant Anaesthetist. If you would like to tell everyone how your department has spent their prize money, please contact Nisha Ross for further details. Newly Qualified Nurses This year has seen recruitment of 120+ newly qualified nurses. Attending the annual bespoke NQN induction day on 2 October, they were all welcomed to the Trust and keen to take up their first posts. They all start their local induction early October and preceptorship programme VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Have you utilised the career support service in the past year? If yes, we need your help! The career support team is currently working towards the matrix standard; this is a nationally recognised standard for Information, Advice and Guidance services. We will be visited by an independent assessor at the end of November who would like 15minutes of your time in strict confidence to gain feedback on your experience(s). If you are interested, please contact: careersupport@suht.swest.nhs.uk or call Carol Clark on ext 4955 to discuss.
