3 Standards (1) Differentiate career pathways within the Therapeutic cluster. Using supporting evidence from multiple sources, such as local job postings, O*Net OnLine, Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development data, describe the scope of practice and essential knowledge and skills required for these careers. Complete one or more aptitude surveys, analyze the results, and relate in an essay how personal career aptitudes align with careers in therapeutics. (3) Differentiate between the common members of the patient care team summarizing the individual roles and the interrelatedness of the team members as it relates to quality patient care.
4 Objectives for this Unit Define medical therapeutics Research various therapeutic careers Synthesis information relating to specific job descriptions and responsibilities, education requirements, salaries, and personality traits necessary Compile lists of possible schools/training facilities and local job openings Practice filling out applications and creating resumes
5 Objectives for today Research various medical therapeutic careers, working in expert groups.
6 What are medical therapeutics? Careers that: Change the health status of the patient over time. Use a variety of treatments to help patients who are injured, physically or mentally disabled, or emotionally disturbed.
7 First thing. Make a small chart distinguishing the education level for the following: associate s degree, bachelor s degree, master s degree, and doctoral degree.
8 Careers Grouping One Dentistry Dentists, hygienists, dental assistants Emergency Medical services careers Paramedic, EMT (Emergency Medical Technician), first responder Medical careers Physicians, physician assistants (PA), medical assistants Mental and Social Services careers Psychiatrist, psychologists, social workers
9 Important to know!! Can a dental assistant perform the same tasks as the dental hygienist? Who must be present? What is the difference in training between a paramedic and an EMT? Can they perform the same tasks? Can a PA perform the same skills as a medical doctor? What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?
10 Exit Ticket M.D. or D.O.?? What is the difference between an M.D. and an D.O.?? Go to the class website and read the following article link concerning M.D. vs. D.O. Summarize your findings. Can one of them do certain tasks or procedures the other cannot?
11 Bell Work Day 2 Research the various areas that medical doctors or nurses can specialize in? What is the difference between a resident and a fellow (residency vs. fellowship)?

13 Important to know!! What is the difference between an ophthalmologist and an optometrist? Can they perform the same tasks/procedures? What is the difference between an LPN and an RN? What is the difference in their training? What about BSN? NP? What is the major role of a dietician in the hospital setting? Can a veterinary technician take x-rays? Give anesthesia?

19 Important to know or consider!! What are significant differences between an occupational therapist and a physical therapist? Why are morticians and embalmers considered jobs within the medical therapeutics cluster? Would hospitals benefit from an on site massage therapist for its employees? Why would a recreational therapist benefit an atmosphere such as an assisted living home?

21 Bellwork Day 4 Define pathology. Define the prefix audio.
22 Objectives Research next groupings of medical therapeutic careers. Share findings of each area with the class.

24 Important to know and consider!! Who might need to be referred to a speech pathologist? Explain how art, music, and dance therapies are healthcare-related fields? Would you see staff improvement if hospitals provided massage therapy for its employees?
25 Activity for Grouping Four Divide into groups of 2 or 3. You will be given one of the areas listed. Using your large paper: Describe this profession in a brain storm format. Draw pictures or symbols that represent this profession. If you are give mortician/embalmer, you will compare/contrast these two as we did PT/OT with a T-Graph.

35 Questions to consider: Define and describe your area. What are some of the types of procedures you do? What hours do you work? Are there call hours or possible emergency situations? What is the average pay for your area? Are there any risks or hazards to working in your area? Do you work with any special equipment, chemicals, or other materials of interest? Who works in your area? Name all of the possible team members. What type of education do you have and how long does it take?
36 Expert Group Activity STEP ONE: Define and describe each career assigned to your group. List out specific duties, especially any that sound the most interesting.
37 Expert Group Activity STEP TWO: Divide into different groups and share your expertise on each career with your new group. Take new notes on what you learn from the experts.
38 Wrap Up!?!? What makes a career in therapeutics different from careers in other health care clusters? (Diagnostic, Health Informatics, Research, and Supportive Services) Were you surprised at any of the careers in the Medical Therapeutics cluster?
39 Extended Learning Research What specific careers are you interested in knowing more about? Follow the guidelines for your notebook portfolio concerning THREE different careers. Page 46 in your book begins the discussion on careers. Make a bloom ball for each of your choices. These will be a project grade!!
40 Applying for the Job Take an aptitude test or self-assessment. Research the possible education/training locations required for the careers of your choice. Research jobs openings that interest you. Consider the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Practice filling out applications. Construct a current resume. Imagine what your future employer is looking for, and Create a resume of your qualified future self!!
