1 Date: January 2014 Job Title : Cultural Advisor, Pacific Island Department : Regional Forensic Psychiatry Services Location : Regional Forensic Psychiatry Services Carrington Road Gate 2, UNITEC Site Pt Chevalier Auckland Reporting To : Associate Service Manager, Regional Forensic Psychiatry Services Functional Relationships with : Internal The Manager and Director, Regional Forensic Psychiatry Services. All Unit Managers, Psychiatrist, Psychologists, Nurses, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists and other key persons as required. Clients, their families, church and elders. Other ethnic and non-statutory groups as required. General Mental Health Services as required. Police and Justice Department Services and personnel as required. External Auckland Regional Prisons Regional Courts serviced by Court Liaison Pacific Island patients cared for by FCT Community Mental Health accommodation providers Purpose : To provide Pacific Island cultural assessments, interventions and liaison support to enhance the cultural needs of our Pacific clients. KEY TASKS 1. Advise Management and Multidisciplinary Team on appropriate treatment rehabilitation regimes for Pacific Island people. EXPECTED OUTCOMES Team members and management receive sound and appropriate advice Patients receive appropriate care in accordance with their cultural back- Waitemata District Health Board -JOB DESCRIPTION - Page 1

2 KEY TASKS 2. Advise and educate families of Pacific Island patients on the nature, onset, etc of psychiatric illness. 3. To advise and assist all disciplines and unit with activities and programmes. 4 Accept client referrals and provide cultural assessments and report on Forensic clients EXPECTED OUTCOMES ground/ethnicity. Patient concerns/problems/illnesses are identified appropriately and where necessary translated to the clinical team. Cultural sensitivity is maintained throughout the review/assessment process. A cultural assessment is documented. Ongoing advice ensures quality of service is maintained. Translations extend to family members. Background/history of patients ascertained from family in conjunction with social worker. Families understand the nature of mental illness making it easier to come to terms with their kin s disability. Discharge possibilities are increased through a combined concerted effort of family and the team. Family will receive appropriate support that is available in the community. Release or home leave may be instigated at an earlier stage due to greater understanding by family members who will be able to cope better through education and understanding will attend regular meetings with community based organisations. Disciplines and Unit staff get sound advice on the therapy needs of Pacific Island patients. Patients receive best possible care, service and options for therapy Treatment options that are appropriate to the cultural needs of Pacific Island patients are introduced offering a wider choice of selections. Patients have more options available to them which they use for greater variety and choices in their daily programmes. Religious observance in keeping with patients needs are attended to. An holistic approach to care and cures in instigated and maintained. Religious beliefs and practices remain a right for the patients, not a courtesy. Culturally appropriate assessment is completed on time. An holistic view of the client is presented All referrals are documented and accounted for. 3 KEY TASKS 5. Follow up and ongoing care of client and families both while in Forensic Units and in the community EXPECTED OUTCOMES and are documented. Families get appropriate advice for the follow-up care and treatment of clients. Follow-up care problems are identified early and rectified. Work with FCT and FPT as required. 6. Promote, introduce training/education on Pacific Island culture for patients and staff. Management receive advice and suggestions. Staff receive sound and appropriate Advice. Pacific Island patients and staff are not offended through inappropriate actions, behaviour or comments thereby leading to more harmonious interaction in all phases of treatment or residency 7. To undergo staff training as required. Able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles, philosophies of Forensic Services. Attends staff training sessions Demonstrate competence in an understanding and meets the requirements of, the clients needs and how these can be best attended to within the team and to advise the team as required. 8. To officiate on behalf of Forensic Services as required. Public relations image is maintained. Forensic Service profile in the Pacific Island Community is enhanced through appropriate representation.
