1 SURG 418 Secondary Acting Internship SURG 419 Required Acting Internship SURG Elective SURG 418a/419a/420a Trauma Team/Critical Care Surgery Acting Internship (LSU-MCLNO) Dr. Patrick Greiffenstein Dr. John Hunt Dr. Alan Marr Dr. Jennifer Mooney Dr. Lance Stuke Number of Students (Combined Required Acting Internship, Secondary Internship and Elective): 3 (This course is not available to Visiting Students) Objectives: A four-week course offering extensive clinical experience in trauma/acute care at the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans. The student s responsibility will approximate those of an intern. Means of Implementation: The student will participate in trauma work up, critical care management, operative care and post-operative care of patients. The student will be expected to participate in all rounds and seminars in the surgical services, and to read extensively on clinical and post-operative problems of the student s assigned patients. The majority of time on this rotation will be spent in the TICU and students will be expected to participate in trauma call. Method of Evaluation: Will be grade by staff and residents. SURG 418b/419b/420b General Surgery Acting Internship (Cohn s Service Touro & UH, New Orleans) Dr. John Morrison Number of Students (Combined Required Acting Internship, Secondary Internship and Elective): 1

2 Objectives: A four-week course offering extensive clinical experience in general/oncologic surgery and endoscopy at Touro Infirmary and LSU-MCLNO. The student s responsibility will approximate those of an intern. Means of Implementation: The student will participate in pre-operative evaluations, operative care and post-operative care of patients. The student will be expected to participate in all rounds and seminars in the surgical services, and to read extensively on clinical and post-operative problems of the student s assigned patients. Method of Evaluation: Will be graded by staff and residents. SURG 418c/419c/420c Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery Externship/Acting Internship (LSU-MCLNO) Dr. Herman Heck Dr. Jared Gilmore Dr. William Richer Objectives: A four-week elective in which a student will develop significant familiarity with the pathophysiology of cardiac and thoracic problems. He/she will be exposed to various co-morbidities and comorbid induced complications, and learn the analysis and judgment required by a physician in treating these in order to effect acceptable outcome. Means of Implementation: The student will work with the thoracic surgical faculty and house staff at University Hospital. Participation in rounds and conferences at all hospitals will be supplemented by independent and assigned readings. The student will participate as second assistant on all cardiac and/or thoracic cases in the OR, and will participate with the attending physician or resident while caring for these patients postoperatively in the ICU and their recovery on the telemetry unit. The student will be expected to be well-groomed, cleanly dressed, conforming to the Department resident Method of Evaluation: Will be evaluated by staff and residents. Means of Implementation: Participating students will act as interns on our busy vascular service. Students will follow their own patients, perform consultations, and learn the basics of open and endovascular surgery. Students will have ample opportunity to first assist on a variety of vascular procedures. Research opportunities and extensive simulation experience are also available. The student will be expected to be well-groomed, cleanly dressed, conformation to the Department resident Method of Evaluation: Will be graded by staff. SURG 419e/420e Plastic Surgery (LSU-MCLNO, et al.) Dr. M. Whitten Wise Dr. Charles Dupin Dr. Hugo St. Hilaire Number of Students (Combined Required Acting Internship and Elective): 2 Availability: All blocks and Summer Objectives: A four week course at LSU affiliated Hospitals offering an introduction to plastic surgery. Means of implementation: The student will spend time at University Hospital, West Jefferson Medical Center and various other sites in the New Orleans area. The student will be an active participant in the preoperative and operative management of surgical problems representing the various phases of plastic

4 surgery including head and neck tumors, hand surgery, maxillofacial surgery, cosmetic surgery, congenital surgery, and general reconstructive surgery, and the various aspects of microsurgery. The student will be expected to read from assigned references and attend all plastic surgery clinics and conferences. The student will be expected to be well-groomed, cleanly dressed, conforming to the Department resident Method of evaluation: Will be evaluated by staff and plastic surgery residents. The student s responsibility will approximate those of an intern. The student s responsibility will approximate those of an intern. The student will be expected to participate in all rounds and seminars in the surgical services, and to read extensively on clinical and post-operative problems of the student s assigned patients. Method of Evaluation: Will be grade by staff and residents. Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center 5000 Hennessy Blvd. Baton Rouge, LA (225) Our Lady of the Lake is one of the largest private medical centers in Louisiana, with more than 700 licensed beds and an 11-parish service area. In a given year, Our Lady of the Lake treats more than 35,000 patients in the hospital and serves more than 350,000 persons through outpatient locations, with the assistance of more than 1,000 physicians and 4,000 team members. Full-time faculty members of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, based in Baton Rouge, direct the approved residency programs at Our Lady of the Lake. In addition, resident staff members in a number of specialties are rotated to OLOL as part of their training in the programs of the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. Baton Rouge is the center of a rich cultural section of the South where many nationalities can be discovered through a variety of culinary experiences. New Orleans, with its many fine restaurants and other attractions, is only an hour s drive from Baton Rouge. The Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas are easily accessible over good highways. The excellent climate allows the serious sportsman to enjoy year round fishing and hunting opportunities as well as tennis, gold, swimming, water-skiing and boating. 6 Objectives: To expose interested students to the spectrum of clinical pediatric surgical problems. To provide an opportunity to integrate basic surgical and pediatric knowledge in the clinical setting and to further develop patient management skills. Means of implementation: Rotations in Clinical Pediatric Surgery will be offered at Children s Hospital. The student twill participate in the pre-operative, operative and post-operative management of infants and children who demonstrate a wide variety of surgical disuses. These patients will be seen in the outpatient clinics and on the wards of the above hospitals. Responsibilities include patient history and physical examinations, supervised order writing, operating room assistance, case presentations, selected readings and conference discussions. The student will be expected to be well-groomed, cleanly dressed, conforming to the Department resident Method of evaluations: Will be evaluated by staff and residents. SURG 418i/419i/420i Colorectal Surgery (Touro) Dr. Guy Orangio Objectives: A four week course at LSU University Hospital and Clinic, Saint Charles Clinic and Touro Hospital offering an introduction to Colon and Rectal Surgery Means of Implementation: The student will spend time at the University Hospital and Clinic and Saint Charles Clinic and Touro Hospital. The Student will be an active participant in office evaluation of patient with anorectal disease, complex colorectal disease and small bowel disease. Consultation, pre operative, intraoperative and postoperative management of patients with colon/rectal/anal cancers, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis and common diseases of the anus and rectum. The student will be involved in a vast operative experience laparotomy, minimally invasive surgery on the colon and rectum (including Robotic Surgery). The student will be expected to read from assigned text books and journals and will attend all conference. The student will be expected to be well groomed, and dressed conforming to the Department of Surgery resident dress code and to conduct him/her self in a courteous and professional manner. Method of Evaluation: Will be by staff and senior general surgery residents on the rotation

7 SURG 420j - Craniofacial, Head and Neck Reconstruction Dr. Hugo St-Hilaire Dr. Michael Moses Availability: All blocks Number of Students (Elective ONLY): 1 Objectives: Act as an intern on the craniofacial, head and neck reconstruction service. Means of Implementation: The 4th year rotation is strictly a craniofacial and head and neck reconstruction elective. Method of Evaluation: The students will be evaluated by Dr. St-Hilaire and Michael Moses according to their performance on the elective. SURG 498: Free Planned Elective The student interested in the Free Planned Elective course will first contact a faculty attending to sponsor the elective. Together, the faculty attending and the student will complete the SURG 498 Free Planned Elective Information Form which outlines daily activities and objectives of the course. Students in the past have participated in ongoing faculty research or rotated with attendings as an acting intern. Students are required to submit the Free Planned Elective Information Form to Nikole Dominique-Maikell (ndomi1@lsuhsc.edu) at least three weeks before the rotation is to begin in order for the department to approve the outlined course. Faculty attendings will be required to complete an evaluation on New Innovations once the course is complete.
