3 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Initially established in 1946 for malaria control Today CDC has more than 15,000 employees in 168 occupational categories, in more than 50 countries Federal assignees in most state health departments

7 PHPS Mission To contribute to the development of a highly trained public health workforce of Fellows with public health experience and the management and leadership skills necessary to promote the health of populations at the global, national, state, and local levels. PHPS Class of 2008

8 Eligibility U.S. citizenship At least 1 year of paid public health work experience Master s degree in public health or management related field from an accredited school or program related to public health or management o MPH, MSW, MPA, MSPH, MA, MS, MPP, MSE, MBA, MHA, MHSE, MSN o Academic achievement in core study areas Strong interest in a career in public health program management

18 Highlights of Recent PS Activities in CDC Assignments Evaluated U.S. capacity to comply with the Revised International Health Regulations (manuscript under review) Planned June WHO/CDC H1N1 Consultation on Mass Gatherings to Saudi Arabia Co-facilitated focus groups about Rocky Mountain spotted fever in an underserved at-risk population and presented findings and recommendations to the population s Tribal Council Performed Technical Assistance Review in Pierre, SD to assess emergency preparedness plan Coordinated 2009 Global Health Workforce Staffing Plan mid-year review, detailing modifications and updates to CDC's overseas positions and staffing Designed an evaluation to measure national trends of breastfeeding over a 20 year period Attended South African National AIDS conference to build partnerships between South African public health stakeholders and the CDC's Division of Global Public Health Capacity Development

19 Highlights of Recent Field Activities Developed and implemented the Alaska Child Abuse and Neglect Surveillance System Assisted the health department in securing over $1 million in private grant funds to implement a citywide coordinated agenda to prevent cardiovascular disease and diabetes in Baltimore, MD Conducted a community rapid needs assessment in 9 western Kentucky counties following a winter ice storm Led evaluation of 400-person emergency preparedness drill in MA Co-authored Healthy Communities Development white paper for Yesler Terrace Redevelopment (public housing redevelopment work, Seattle, WA) Drafted the Viral Hepatitis Prevention Plan for Los Angeles County, Developed an Asthma Surveillance Report for the state of Florida in April 2009

20 Salary First year approximately $49,000 Second year Based on performance, and geographic location of field assignment, salary increased by approximately $1300 Third year Based on performance, salary increased by approximately $8000
