3 Active temperature management: Why & When Bair Hugger therapy: your Standard of Caring therapy. Bair Hugger therapy helps you improve patient outcomes. Studies show that warming patients to maintain a core temperature of >36 C helps you improve outcomes, reduce risk factors and lower rates of complications such as:* wound infections coagulopathy cardiac events morbidity mortality Bair Hugger therapy enhances patient satisfaction. Forced-air warming promotes patient comfort and well-being by helping eliminate post-anesthesia shivering and complaints of cold. Unless hypothermia is specifically indicated (e.g., for protection against ischemia), the intraoperative core temperature should be maintained above 36 C. * For details of study contact Arizant Healthcare Inc. - Daniel I. Sessler, MD N Engl J Med, 1997;336: Arizant Healthcare Inc. 2

30 A few Words About Safety The Bair Hugger family of products were created to enhance patient health. Here are a few recommendations that will help you realize the most benefit from your Bair Hugger system without compromising patient safety or well-being. Clinical Warming - Bair Hugger Therapy Change the filter on your Bair Hugger temperature management unit. To keep your temperature management unit running within calibrated temperature specifications, the filter should be changed every 6 months or after 500 hours of operation. Don t reuse warming blankets. Reusing a warming blanket exposes your patient to unnecessary risk of infection. In addition, any tears or creases can decrease effectiveness or lead to hot spots which may cause thermal injury. Don t use Bair Hugger temperature management units without Bair Hugger blankets. Using a Bair Hugger temperature management unit hose to blow hot air under cotton blankets is not only ineffective, it s unsafe. Thermal injury has been shown to occur when Bair Hugger temperature management units are used without Bair Hugger blankets to warm patients. Don t use Bair Hugger temperature management units with other forced-air warming blankets. The Bair Hugger system is calibrated to operate safely using Bair Hugger blankets. In addition, the performance and safety of Bair Hugger therapy are guaranteed as a complete system only. Using any other type of forced-air warming blanket can reduce the effectiveness of patient warming or expose your patient to unnecessary risk. Blood/Fluid Warming - Ranger System and 241 Set When using the Ranger system and 241 blood and fluid warming disposable sets, do not exceed 300 mm Hg. Comfort Warming - Bair Paws System Change the filter on your Bair Paws warming unit. To keep your warming unit running within calibrated temperature specifications, the filter should be changed every 6 months or after 500 hours of operation. The Bair Paws warming unit is not indicated for use in the OR. Don t use Bair Paws warming units without a Bair Paws gown. Using a Bair Paws warming unit hose to blow hot air under cotton blankets is not only ineffective, it s unsafe, and may cause thermal injury. 29 arizanthealthcare.com
