3 Welcome to the world of the Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) Working in the Operating Theatre, you re truly at the sharp end of the care provided to patients undergoing surgery. An operation is often an important step on the road back to normal life. That s why caring for patients in theatres is a rewarding career that gives you a real sense of privilege. You ll see sights that you won t see anywhere else; you ll get to meet a great variety of people and become involved in many different situations. In essence, you ll become a key member of a team that cares for the patient at this crucial time. This role is enjoyable and stimulating, providing that you can accept the responsibility and the pressure that goes hand-in-hand with the fulfilment. 3

5 What does an ODP do? Operating Department Practitioners are an important part of the theatre team working with surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses to help ensure every operation is as safe and effective as possible. ODPs provide high standards of care and skilled support alongside medical and nursing colleagues during the patients perioperative journey. The ODPs role involves the application of theory to practice in a variety of clinical settings. The ODP therefore needs a broad knowledge and skill base including management and communication skills and will be involved with the assessment, delivery and evaluation of peri-operative care. Peri-operative care can be divided into three interconnected phases anaesthetic phase surgical phase recovery phase Aim of the programme ODPs provide a professional service within the multidisciplinary environment of the hospital s operating department and are engaged in the delivery of individualised patient care. The duties of the ODP involve working closely with other professionals to ensure that the care delivered to patients is in line with best practice and aims for a successful patient outcome. The aim of this programme is to provide you with the educational opportunities to gain the ODP BSc. You will then be fit to practise as an ODP upon graduation and eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council. 5

6 Content of the programme This full-time programme takes place over a continuous 144-week period, with programmes commencing twice a year, (in spring and autumn). You will attend the University of Leicester for academic study and you will be linked to a placement hospital where you will undertake practice experience. The programme is divided in to 15 Modules of Study, you must successfully achieve all Modules to gain the Award: The main learning methods used during the programme are: experiential learning, reflective practice, classroom study, private study and critical evaluation. Key subject areas include: Biological sciences, principles of peri-operative care, operating department technology and the legal, ethical and professional issues that affect clinical practice. The main assessment methods used are; practical, student assignments, presentations, projects and examinations. Operating Department Practice at the University of Leicester, combines academic facilities of the highest quality and a supportive culture within a welcoming academic environment. 7 Academic/Practice Split During the programme you will spend 30 weeks in the classroom. The rest of the time is spent undertaking clinical placements and self-directed study. It is important to ensure the integration of academic learning and clinical practice. The higher level of compulsory attendance on the programme ensures that students achieve a unique level of readiness and fitness to practise as an ODP. 8 What support will I receive during my studies? Support in practice You will be linked to and supported by an approved Placement Hospital. Assessment in practice is carried out by hospital Registered practitioners. They are themselves experts in operating department practice and fulfil the role of clinical placement managers and student mentor/assessors. Support for study Each student is supported by a personal tutor who will provide academic and pastoral support. Access is also available to all specialist support services that are expected in a leading teaching and research university. Entry requirements 112 UCAS Points All students must be 18 years of age by the start date of the programme. Details and further guidance on our entry criteria can be found on our website. We aim to enable applicants from a variety of educational backgrounds to access our programme. This includes those with traditional A2 Level qualifications who will need to gain a BBC, but also those who may have undertaken other qualifications such as an Access to Higher Education programme. There is also some flexibility in our entry criteria for mature applicants (21 and over). All applicants must be 18 years of age by the start date of the programme. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate an achievement equivalent to IELTS Level 6.5. What do I do now? 9 During my time on the ODP course I have been continuously supported by the tutors, they have always made time for me when I sought advice. As an adult dyslexic learner I feared that I would struggle academically yet with great support, not only have I kept up but managed to achieve numerous high grades within areas I never would have dreamed possible. 9

Accommodation We are happy to provide advice for students that may require accommodation whilst on the programme. High quality student accommodation at Leicester offers a place to live for those students based at Leicester hospitals. We can also offer expert advice to students whose clinical placement will be elsewhere in the East Midlands. 10

11 Sports Facilities You can enjoy a workout, take a swim or build up a sweat in a fitness class at our modern sports centres on campus or at Manor Road. You can also get involved with our sports clubs, which welcome members of all abilities. Keen competitors can also represent the University through Team Leicester, the hotly-contested Varsity matches and our thriving Intramural events. Library Our award-winning David Wilson Library is a light, airy, five-storey building providing state-of-the art services. The Library is a first-class study environment with wireless access throughout, 24/5 opening during term-time, hundreds of PCs, laptop loans, group study rooms, support staff and a café. Our digital library, available 24/7 on and off campus, contains over 800,000 ebooks, 65,000 electronic journals and online support services. Attenborough Arts Centre The Attenborough Arts Centre is the University s own arts centre, offering a vibrant programme of events, music, spoken word, and exhibitions in its new gallery and performance spaces. Attenborough Arts offers you the chance to try something new, from a variety of arts courses to hula hoop dancing or creative writing. There are special discounts for students. Or if you just want a break from your studies you can enjoy free lunchtime music performances or have a drink at the café. 11
