3 In 2010, the Institute of Medicine and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation issued a report: The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health The report offered 8 recommendations to transform the practice of nursing The implementation phase of the report = Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action

4 The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health is the most viewed online report in IOM history! Participation in nearly every state Thirty-six campaign-designated state Action Coalitions

6 AARP s Center to Champion Nursing in America (CCNA) National Council of State Boards of Nursing Champion Nursing Coalition and Council: 48 national non-nursing organizations and 27 national nursing organizations Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, WHO

7 1. Remove scope of practice barriers 2. Expand opportunities for nurses to lead and diffuse collaborative improvement efforts 3. Implement nurse residency programs 4. 14 October 12, 2011 A Montana Conversation to Accelerate Educational Advancement: Getting to 80% Baccalaureate Preparation by 2020 Mary Sue Gorski, RN, PhD, tenured faculty in nursing at Gonzaga (& Fellow with CCNA), will present the Initiative s perspective on this recommendation to the Board of Nursing at its October meeting. Educators and others will join her for dinner at Carroll College.

15 April 14, Official launch of the MT Campaign for Action and CAHN in Bozeman at the Sigma Theta Tau nursing honor society conference with a focus on leadership Sue Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, is the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Senior Adviser for Nursing. She is tasked with leading the Foundation s strategies to address the nurse and nurse faculty shortages to create a higher quality of patient care in the US. She is also the Director of the RWJF Initiative on the Future of Nursing at the IOM.

16 Application in process for Montana to become a member in the Forum of State Nursing Workforce Centers This work in Montana is being led by the Montana Office of Rural Health s Healthcare Workforce Advisory Committee; rather than re-create the wheel, Campaign for Action members joined forces with MORH to strategize solutions for consistent collection and analysis of nursing workforce data.

Education create statewide master plan, innovative models, degree recognition in practice. Transition to Practice education to improve quality and retention, specific to rural practice.
