1 Edmonton Catholic Schools is now accepting applications for the position of LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE (New position) Edmonton Catholic Schools is a large urban school district whose mission is to provide a Catholic education that inspires students to learn and that prepares them to live fully and to serve God in one another. The District is comprised of over 34,000 students and 3,000 employees in 88 schools and other sites. The Department of Learning Services- Innovation has an opening for 3 Licensed Practical Nurses at a senior high, junior high, and elementary school. The position provides health services for students who have medical conditions or major functional limitations. The incumbent attends to the medical and personal care needs of students with severe disabilities, conditions and disorders. The needs could include, but are not limited to, requirement for g-tube feeding, ostomy care, lifting, tracheostomy care, seizure monitoring, feeding, monitoring risk of choking and mobility exercises. Students are in Kindergarten through Grade 12. Working under the supervision of a teacher, or therapeutic specialist, the job also provides guidance and support to Educational Assistants working with students with physical and emotional support needed to be successful in the classroom. Health care work is done with guidance and direction from a therapeutic specialist or medical professional. The incumbent requires specialized knowledge in the area of health and personal care to handle key facets of the job. The job works independently and participates on multi-disciplinary team. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES: Normally a job has four to eight core responsibilities, each of which shows what the job is accountable for, within what framework, and what the added value is. For each responsibility, approximately four major activities should be described. List the core responsibilities in ascending order of importance. 1. Perform health care related tasks, such as monitoring vital signs, administering medication, G-tube and ostomy care 2. Provide guidance, instruction and support to Educational Assistants on a day-to-day basis including training, coaching, and demonstrating basic medical and physical care 3. Participate in case reviews, consult with the educational team, multi-disciplinary team and therapeutic specialists to evaluate the student s needs, and plan for continuing services. 4. Prepare and maintain records of student s progress and services performed, report changes to the educational team 5. Identify factors which have an effect on various types of health conditions (e.g., glucose control for the diabetic) and develop solutions. 6. Provide information to supervisor, co-workers, Educational Assistants, and the Educational Teams by telephone, in written form, , or in person. 7. Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems. 8. Provide input into the Individual Program Plan process with a focus on health and wellness 9. Collect information and maintain medical logs and/or documentation 10. Maintain knowledge through professional development activities 11. Assist Educational Assistant with difficult situations and provide cover-off and support during absences 12. When not handling medical assignments the job assists with classroom support October 12,

3 PROBLEM SOLVING: Describe difficult or challenging situations the position is typically expected to solve; the degree of originality of the solutions; assistance available; and any problems or decisions that must be referred to a supervisor for resolution or approval The work is done within the care plan; however, the incumbent will routinely conduct needs assessment to identify a specific student s needs and select the appropriate procedure to resolve problems. The job is required to make quick decisions and has the authority to handle emergency situations independently. In consultation with the teacher, the job will evaluate the performance of Educational Assistants in working with medically fragile students, identify gaps in knowledge and determine when additional training is required. ORGANIZATIONAL DATA: Identify any measurable areas upon which the job has either direct or indirect impact. Measures that may be included are: number of staff supervised, annual operating budget, number and size of projects, clients served or any other significant values. The students are in Kindergarten through Grade 12 with a range of needs related to varied and serious medical conditions, disorders, delays and illnesses. The job supports the goals of the of the student s IPP which includes the students care plan. The job provides guidance, instruction and support to Educational Assistants on a day-to-day basis including training, coaching, and demonstrating basic medical and physical care. When not handling medical assignments the job assists with classroom support. Contact could occur with parents; however, only under the directions of a teacher or principal. Knowledge & Experience Competencies Graduation from an approved nursing education program with Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) registration, plus three years of related experience Knowledge of ambulation aids; normal anatomy and physiology; deviations in anatomy and physiology due to developmental delays, illnesses and medical conditions Knowledge of how deviations in normal development affect behavioural, emotional and mental health (i.e. Downs Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy).
