Patients admitted to the Specialty Hospital at Rittenhouse are typically too ill to go to other levels of care, require a doctor s care every day, or need rehabilitation at a slower pace. Long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) like the Specialty Hospital at Rittenhouse also offer more intensive medical intervention, such as cardiac monitoring, administering multiple IVs and ventilator weaning. 9 PROGRAM SERVICES The Specialty Hospital at Rittenhouse has unique programs that are dedicated to the care of individuals with a variety of conditions. Our care is delivered with four core specialty programs: Infectious Diseases, Pulmonary, Medically Complex, and Wound Management. 7

CATHY MATTERA, SPOUSE OF FORMER PATIENT INFECTIOUS DISEASES PROGRAM Infections are often unexpected and stressful events that can lead to extended hospital stays. The Specialty Hospital at Rittenhouse provides comprehensive medical and nursing services to care for patients with infectious diseases requiring IV antibiotics. Our program provides the highest quality care, led by specialized medical staff and board-certified infectious disease physicians. WHAT TO EXPECT Our physician-led infectious disease team is backed by the Penn Medicine network, and includes a board-certified infectious disease physician and a certified infection control nurse. These clinicians work closely with pharmacists, hospitalists and other team members to prevent, monitor and treat infections, through a variety of methods: Managing antibiotic use to prevent development of drug-resistant organisms Diagnosing early infections Comprehensive clinical wound management and therapy IV therapy (TPN and antibiotics) Nutritional counseling WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM OUR PROGRAM? Patients who may require specialized care for conditions such as: Endocarditis Osteomyelitis Brain abscesses Septic arthritis Infected surgical wounds We also specialize in caring for patients with complicated medical conditions such as organ transplants, HIV, chronic mycobacterial infections, fungal infections, and cystic fibrosis. 11 PULMONARY PROGRAM The pulmonary services program at the Specialty Hospital at Rittenhouse serves patients who need pulmonary, respiratory and/or ventilator care requiring comprehensive medical, nursing, respiratory and rehabilitation services. The majority of our patients require a ventilator after surgical complications or infections. Our goal is to help manage your respiratory illness and reduce the need for supplemental oxygen to help you achieve your highest possible level of independence. WHAT TO EXPECT Patients admitted to our pulmonary services program work closely with a physician-led team to become as stable as possible, and begin restorative therapies aimed at supporting recovery. We provide a wide range of technologically-advanced care to patients, including: Specialized nursing and respiratory therapy Cardiac monitoring Aerosolized medications Airway management, clearance and chest physiotherapy modalities Comprehensive low-tolerance rehabilitation therapy FEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing) to evaluate swallow function and provide treatment for dysphagia patients Fiberoptic bronchoscopy WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM OUR PROGRAM? The medically complex program at the Specialty Hospital at Rittenhouse provides a variety of state-of-the-art therapies that compliment ongoing medical care for multiple diagnoses. To meet these challenges, we provide a physician-led multidisciplinary team. WHAT TO EXPECT Our Medically Complex program provides comprehensive medical management and a variety of therapy services for your specific needs. Below is a list of treatment options: Specialized nursing and respiratory therapy Intravenous (IV) medications, fluid replacement, and nutritional support Advanced pain management Advanced cardiac disease and heart failure management Hemodialysis Anti-coagulation Insulin therapy, insulin pump regulation and diabetic teaching WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM OUR PROGRAM? 13 WOUND MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Complex wounds often exist concurrently with other conditions including cardiac, pulmonary, neuromuscular and renal diseases. The Specialty Hospital at Rittenhouse has a wound care program that features comprehensive medical and nursing services to care for patients with infections requiring IV antibiotics. Our program provides the highest quality care, led by specialized medical staff and specially trained wound care professionals. WHAT TO EXPECT Our wound care team consists of nurses, nurse practitioners, and as needed, a vascular/general surgeon. A comprehensive wound care treatment plan includes regular exams, follow-up and communication with outside providers (surgical teams, wound care specialists, etc.), to ensure continuity of care. Wound program provides: Comprehensive clinical wound assessment and treatment plan Physical and occupational therapy services Patient-specific specialized seating and support surfaces WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM OUR PROGRAM? Patients who may require specialized care for a variety of complex wound conditions such as: Diabetic, arterial, and venous ulcers Fistulae/ostomies Pre- and post-flap surgery Pressure ulcers Surgical wounds/wound dehiscence IV therapy (TPN and antibiotics) Nutritional assessments and counseling Negative Pressure Wound Therapy that provides vacuum dressing to promote wound healing 11

WHAT TO EXPECT Transitional rehabilitation patients at the Specialty Hospital at Rittenhouse receive a mix of physical, occupational and speech therapies. The duration and frequency of therapy is adjusted on a patient-by-patient basis, to accommodate each person s care plan, taking into account: Medical status Progress toward functional goals Willingness to participate Participation in daily life activities Discharge destination The transitional rehabilitation services also serve as a bridge to other levels of care, such as inpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing, outpatient therapy, or home health care. Through our transitional rehabilitation, we re committed to work with you to help maximize your independence one step at a time. WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM OUR PROGRAM? As transitional rehabilitation patients build strength they begin to tolerate more physical, occupational and speech therapy. To officially move to our transitional rehabilitation services you must be able to tolerate one hour of therapy, 5 days a week, and have a discharge goal to either go home or to another level of inpatient rehabilitation. 15 FREQUENTLY ABOUT THE SPECIALTY HOSPITAL AT RITTENHOUSE ASKED QUESTIONS Insurance and Billing Can the Specialty Hospital at Rittenhouse take patients with Medical Assistance? Pennsylvania Medical Assistance (MAPA) and managed medical assistance plans do not recognize the long-term acute care (LTACH) level of care, which limits our ability to accept medical assistance as primary insurance. We do accept patients with MAPA or managed medical assistance as their secondary insurance on a case-by-case basis. What about other insurances? The Specialty Hospital is an in-network provider for many insurance companies and most of the commercial payers in the area. We are happy to review your coverage and if needed negotiate with your insurance company, if we are not contracted. Does the Specialty Hospital at Rittenhouse bill the Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) benefit under Medicare? No. The Specialty Hospital is licensed as a long-term acute care hospital and, therefore, the days are billed as hospital days. Visitors Are visitors allowed? Yes. General visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. friends and family are encouraged to visit during these hours. Please note that since the care of each patient is individualized, visitations may be limited, if necessary. The Specialty Hospital physicians and staff works closely with your family and friends to determine suitable visiting hours. Visitation is often limited during flu season. Is parking available? Yes. Convenient parking for Penn Medicine Rittenhouse is available at the parking garage located at 1740 South Street. We offer free parking for one vehicle per day, and discounted rates with validation for other visitors. We also have valet parking available from our 18th Street entrance. Is the Specialty Hospital at Rittenhouse accessible by Public Transportation? Yes. It is accessible by several public transportation routes: The SEPTA Broad Street subway line (orange line) stops four blocks east from the Specialty Hospital at the Lombard Street and South Street station. The PATCO subway line from south Jersey stops at 16th & Locust Streets, just blocks from the Specialty Hospital. SEPTA bus route 40 stops at the Specialty Hospital, both east on South Street and west on Lombard Street. Post-Admission Is the Specialty Hospital at Rittenhouse a rehabilitation unit? No. While the Specialty Hospital is not a rehabilitation unit, we incorporate physical, occupational and speech therapy into your plan of care as appropriate. Your care team will work with you to determine your individual goals and what role therapy may play in meeting them. Can patients stay permanently? No. Patients admitted to the Specialty Hospital are in a hospital level of care that averages 25 days. As a specialty hospital we are not able to provide long-term custodial care. What if the patient has a physician appointment outside of the hospital? Our staff will make the necessary arrangements for those patients who need to be seen by a physician outside of the hospital, when required. 13

Our case managers help coordinate communication with your clinical team and insurance company to ensure you receive the highest quality of care and determine a discharge plan to progress you to your next level of care.
