Please contribute to the next edition with tidbits to share with your colleagues from around the world. Information on the culture of your country, a brief report on a conference, a parental report, a nurses story or something about the history of your country in relation to neonates are all stories we are happy to receive. Reviews of articles from your country would also be gratefully received. 2 A bit of History Who was Benjamin José Schmidt? Bulletin edition timetables June/July NORTH AMERICA Submissions due 30 th June August/September SOUTH AFRICA Submissions due 31 st August A pediatrician and entrepreneur he was instrumental in establishing research into Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEM) in São Paulo in the 60 s. He worked as a volunteer at the Habilitation Center of the Association of Parents and Friends of the Mentally Handicapped (APAE) and created a laboratory for the research of hyperphenylalanemia, especially phenylketoninuria. Dr Schmidt identified the use of the Guthrie technique for collection of blood samples on filter paper for the first time. This progressed to the detection of congenital hypothyroidism in newborns by the measurement of T4 in the same blood spot sample. Dr Schmidt participated in the creation of SLEIMPN (the Latin American Society of Inborn Errors of Metabolism and Neonatal Screening) and this society was very important in helping countries in Latin America to commence a neonatal screening programme. Travelling through the Peruvian Ecuadorian rainforest through a small village this neonatal nurse saw a baby in a house up on stilts. The baby was sleeping peacefully on a mattress in a hammock dressed in woollens, wrapped securely and draped with mosquito netting. The baby was beautifully warm and reinforced for this neonatal nurse the importance of woollens and appropriate clothing for any new born infant despite the fact it was 36 C. The following website reflects some of the culture and spiritual aspects of South America and how to include them in planning and care of services provided in other countries Conferences 2013 The 8th International Neonatal Nursing Conference (COINN 2013) is rapidly approaching. Colleagues from around the world will be converging to discuss excellence in neonatal nursing by developing and codifying a set of better practices that will enhance the quality of care for patients and families everywhere. COINN 2013 will provide a platform for the field s best and brightest to share their expertise and experience. We encourage you to assume a leading role at this triennial event by submitting an abstract online on one of several pertinent topics in the field.
