Utilize the present perfect tense to complete a health survey simulation. Use PowerPoint and/or Handout A: Present Perfect Grammar Reference to review present perfect 2. Facilitate Sam Johnson activity. o Distribute Handout B: CNA s Notes for Resident Sam Johnson and Handout C: Directions for Sam Johnson exercise (Common Errors with Present Perfect). o With class, study the CNA s notes to see what activities have been assigned and completed. o Read activity directions and examples together o Pair students off to complete the activity. 3. Facilitate Health Survey activity. o Review present perfect with ever, never, recently, lately and extended answers in past from Handout D: Conduct a Health Inventory - Grammar Points. o Discuss directions and examples for Health Survey. o Students interview other students and take notes as requested on Handout E: Health Inventory Grid. o Students report experiences to class. 4. Complete Grammar Practice as a class using Handout F: Additional Practice. Assessment: Instructor will be able to observe students as they are interacting in classroom exercises and assess written practice to evaluate the lesson, inform next steps or for graded credit.

Affirmative: I ve already given him the bedpan. She s given him the bedpan already. Negative: Use yet and still for something not finished. I haven t given him the bedpan yet She still hasn t given him the bedpan Question: Has she given him the bedpan yet? Hasn t she given him the bedpan yet? Has she given him given him the bedpan already? Has she already given him the bedpan?

Use lately or recently to further determine the time period of the event. Example 1: Example 2: Have you ever been hospitalized before? No, I haven t. I ve never been hospitalized. Yes, I have. (Use past tense to explain) I was hospitalized several years ago for pneumonia. Have you experienced any episodes of dizziness recently? Yes, I have. (Use present perfect if indicated) I ve experienced episodes of dizziness since the accident. Instructions Interview two classmates using the Health Survey Form. Your classmates should answer each question with both a short and long answer. Take notes of the answers. Make 3 affirmative statements about your classmates answers Examples: Nancy has had some numbness and tingling in her right arm recently. Jenny was hospitalized for a concussion 3 years ago.
