1 Transformational Leadership ADVOCACY & INFLUENCE TL6 The CNO advocates for organizational support of ongoing leadership development for all nurses, with a focus on mentoring and succession planning. Example B: Provide one example, with supporting evidence, of mentoring or succession planning for nurse managers. CNE Advocacy for Ongoing Leadership Development of Nurse Managers Advocate BroMenn Medical Center s (ABMC) Nursing Strategic Framework s vision statement for , shared in the Organizational Overview, is to foster a healing environment that is patient and family-centered, ensuring patient safety and quality through the elevation of professional nursing practice. A number of strategies are currently being utilized to elevate professional nursing practice and to provide support opportunities for leadership development of nurse managers. These strategies include nurse manager participation in Advocate Health Care s (AHC) leader onboarding activities and ongoing Leadership Development Institute (LDI) meetings, as well as the provision of support for nurse managers to participate in off-site education, mentoring and networking activities designed to develop leadership skills and competencies. During the summer of 2014, Laurie Round, MS, BSN, RN, NEA-BC, Vice President of Patient Services and Chief Nursing Executive, was made aware of an opportunity for nurse leaders through her relationships with Illinois State University faculty and Illinois Organization of Nurse Leader s (IONL). The Illinois Nurse Leader Fellowship is a program dedicated to the development and support of new managers and directors from diverse practice environments throughout the state. Incorporating education, mentoring, and networking, the fellowship is designed to build and enhance leadership skills and competencies (Illinois Organization of Nurse Leaders, n.d.). Laurie recognized the Illinois Nurse Leader Fellowship as an opportunity for nurse managers to receive ongoing support and mentorship. She acknowledged that each nursing manager as an individual, could benefit and professionally develop through this program. Intellectual stimulation would be provided in the classroom through book discussions, lecture, and role playing and by challenging current practice and providing guidelines to improve outcomes. Information regarding this fellowship was presented by Laurie to the ABMC nurse managers. Laurie offered to serve as the sponsor for those interested in applying (Exhibit TL6.B.1 IONL Applications). As the sponsor, Laurie s role included financially supporting the selected managers through paid application fees and time off and approving a selected project (Exhibit TL6.B.2 IONL Fellowship Invoice). Of the four managers that applied, Todd McCartney, BSN, RN, CNOR, Operating Room and TL6 ExB Advocate BroMenn Medical Center 1
2 Central Services Nurse Manager, and Angela Turner, MSN, RN, 6 West Surgical Unit and Acute Rehabilitation Unit Nurse Manager, were selected by IONL to participate in the Illinois Nurse Leader Fellowship. Both Todd and Angela were newer to the management role. Todd had been a nurse manager since March He started his nursing career in June Prior leadership experience included operating room charge nurse from Angela had been in the nurse manager role since June She started her nursing career in Prior leadership experience included serving as relief charge nurse on the 6 West Surgical Unit and full time charge nurse at another facility. Nurse Manager Mentoring In November 2014, Todd and Angela began the Illinois Nurse Leader Fellowship. This educational opportunity would provide new skills and networking opportunities to the two novice nurse managers. The program consisted of four two-day sessions over the course of eight months at off-site venues in Oakbrook, Illinois and Normal, Illinois, and involved classroom education and a worksite project. Classroom education was focused around book discussions, conflict resolution through role playing, project management, career development, coaching, and mentoring. The program allowed Todd and Angela to build relationships with fellow Illinois leaders, as well as, the instructors of the course, one of which was Shelly Malin, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, ABMC s Endowed Professor and faculty at Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State University (Exhibit TL6.B.3 IONL Information Packet). Due to Shelly s affiliation with ABMC, Todd and Angela began to meet with her regularly to seek input and direction on the IONL project (Exhibit TL6.B.4 Recurring Calendar Invite). The IONL project chosen involved examining and improving length of stay and total parental nutrition usage for patients undergoing colon surgery, two outcomes that needed improvement at ABMC. During the regular meetings, Shelly was able to guide Todd and Angela through the project management process by providing feedback and past experience. After one of the first meetings, Shelly encouraged setting up a meeting with Laurie to obtain administrative support and funding for an additional education program that had been identified. The World Congress of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) and Perioperative Medicine Program educational opportunity would support the IONL project. The program was a four-day program with attendees from across the world and was specifically designed around evidence-based medicine and improved surgical outcomes. Attendees would be exposed to perioperative clinical data and developments through lecture, debates from world experts, and project implementation ideas. The ERAS program was discussed and approved by Laurie. She approved paid time away from work for Todd and Angela and covered travel expenses to fly to Washington, DC to attend the ERAS program (Exhibit TL6.B.5 ERAS Expense Report). Laurie s support for Todd and Angela s attendance at the Illinois Nurse Leader Fellowship proved to be a valuable experience. The fellowship allowed Todd and TL6 ExB Advocate BroMenn Medical Center 2
3 Angela the opportunity to build relationships with fellow nurse leaders across the state of Illinois. They were able to receive feedback on their project management styles, as well as some inside tips from other Illinois leaders who have implemented the ERAS program already. The mentorship relationship built with Shelly allowed them to develop their confidence in interacting with executive leaders and their project management skills.
