3 Message From Our Leadership Without a doubt this is the most exciting era in the history of Bristol Hospital. This annual report is a snapshot of the accomplishments of our staff _ a dedicated team of professionals whose passion is providing extraordinary care to patients and families throughout Greater Bristol. Our future is now. We have always been in a growth mode and that continues with a commitment to making Bristol Hospital even more financially viable. Our relationship with the Yale New Haven Health System provides local access to specialized physicians and surgeons as it further enhances clinical programs for the benefit of our communities. As an independent, high-quality, low-cost, community hospital, Bristol Hospital is building on its sustainability and will be here for generations to come. Patient safety and quality is our priority. As part of our journey to become a High-Reliability Organization, every employee has completed training on safety initiatives and the principles of human error prevention. This training has already yielded tremendous results as the number of days between serious safety events has dramatically improved. We received an early holiday present in December from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. CMS released the 2015 value-based purchasing adjustment for Out of all 29 Connecticut hospitals, Bristol Hospital was ranked eighth. Value-based purchasing is a strategy to measure, report, and reward excellence in health care delivery. Hospitals then receive financial incentives based on submitted safety, quality and financial data. As a result, CMS has validated the changes at Bristol Hospital that have been made due to the commitment of our staff. Bristol Hospital also was named a Most Wired hospital by the American Hospital Association for its utilization of information technology which includes our new patient portal. Bristol Hospital s Connecticut Gastroenterology Institute received national recognition at last year s Digestive Disease Week Conference in Chicago. Closer to home, our newly-opened Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine offers the most advanced wound healing therapies, two hyperbaric chambers and comprehensive treatments from a diverse team of collaborative specialists. Our center is the only one of its kind in the region with access to onsite specialists and lymphedema care. The Beekley Center for Breast Health and Wellness has become a successful and vital resource to area patients with more than 3,000 diagnostic procedures conducted in its first year alone. Additionally, the team from our joint health program and the Center for Orthopedic and Spine Health completed more than 230 major joint replacement procedures in just its first year. We also added two outstanding, fellowship-trained surgeons to our Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery Program which continues to be one of the highest-quality, most personalized programs of its kind in the state. None of this growth and success is possible without the hard work and dedication of our employees, medical staff, donors and volunteers. They drive the Bristol Hospital mission of providing safe, quality care and services to our patients through a continuum of services and health promotion. Thank you for being Everyday Extraordinary. Bristol Hospital continues to gain recognition not only locally but nationally. Last summer we submitted the 2014 documentation for consideration of the prestigious American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet designation, and with great anticipation, we await a decision on a possible site visit this spring. 14 Live a good life Thanks to a generous cornerstone donation from Phylis Guida and support from the Guida Dairy, Guida family members, Bristol Hospital employees and medical staff, as well as the Bristol community, Bristol Hospital renovated and opened the new Bernie Guida Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center. A dedication ceremony for Mr. Guida was held in September, at which his favorite theme was celebrated, Live a Good Life. The center is part of the hospital s cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation program which is designed to help patients reach their highest level of wellness through exercise training, counseling and support. Bernie Guida, of Guida s Dairy in New Britain, completed his cardiac rehab therapy at Bristol Hospital following heart surgery. He passed away in 2009 at the age of 75 due to complications from diabetes. Guida was very passionate about the hospital s cardiac and pulmonary rehab program, and wanted to ensure that patients could complete their therapy in a newer, more spacious center. After his death, his wife Phyllis Guida set about to fulfill that vision. The renovated center is about 3,000-square feet and includes new exercise equipment, including treadmills and stationary bikes. Proceeds from the hospital wine tasting, golf tournament, and ball also contributed to the project. Inset from left; Patrick Guida, Phyllis Guida, Victoria Hobson and Lisa Friend.
