We offer only the highest quality of health care and related services from an extremely qualified, valued and diverse health care team. We believe in and promote a learning culture to attract and retain an exceptional health care team in order to provide leading-edge, safe, compassionate and exceptional care that surpasses the expectations of those we serve. We do all of our work productively and together, respecting each other and ensuring that our collective efforts are valuable to those we serve We value and encourage all new and innovative ideas and applaud visionary leadership actions that offer growth opportunities to better serve our community. We are responsible stewards of our community resources, always striving for efficiency. The Mission of Altoona Regional Health System is for exceptional people to provide exceptional health care.

4 About Us: Medical Services We are more than just an Emergency Room! Altoona Regional is dedicated to providing patients with the highest quality and most efficient emergency care. Our Emergency Department is staffed with highly trained, multi-skilled individuals. All of the Altoona Regional Emergency Department staff physicians, who provide emergency and trauma care, are board certified and residency trained. The nursing staff is well trained and has gone through education in both adult and pediatric care from medical to trauma emergencies. The ancillary support staff have a variety of educational backgrounds to provide a well-balanced team to care for our patients. All staff members maintain their skills though continuing education and are up to date on current and effective medical care. The treatment areas within the Emergency Department are equipped with state-of-theart patient monitoring devices and have access to all aspects of care within the hospital. Treatment areas include an isolation room, an OB/GYN room, two trauma rooms with four-bed capability, express care rooms and many acute treatment areas. To expedite the care to the patient and minimize the wait, the Emergency Department is now completely paperless. This computerized charting system allows for more communication and faster registration information. In addition, this bedside technology speeds the delivery of healing care and provides our board certified emergency medicine physicians with instant access to a patient's medical records. Our triage nurse is positioned for a direct view of the waiting area. The Emergency Department also houses the Regional Referral number. This number is used by referring facilities to transfer patients from one facility to another. The Regional Referral number assists in the ease of the transfer of patients by allowing the emergency medicine physician to accept the patient. The Emergency Department staff prides themselves on the rapid, high quality of care for patients with mild to critical injuries. Altoona Regional strives for rapid turnaround times for illness and injuries while offering support for patients and their families. Regional Level II Trauma Center Altoona Regional Health System Trauma Center is one of 27 fully accredited trauma centers in Pennsylvania. It has the largest service area in the state, serving 20 counties in West Central Pennsylvania. The trauma center is an integral component of the emergency medical services (EMS) system that manages patient care from the time of injury to treatment at a local hospital

5 About Us: Medical Services (cont d) and/or trauma center and through the rehabilitative phase. Fully-staffed 24/7 with board-certified trauma surgeons and a team of experienced professionals, life-saving surgery is available within minutes of arrival. Patients are cared for in four state-of-the-art trauma bays that can handle six critically injured patients simultaneously. The board-certified trauma surgeons are supported by the health system's experienced emergency medicine physicians, trauma orthopedic surgeons, trauma neurosurgeons and many other trauma trained professionals. This team works together to deliver more help and more hope to trauma patients and families. Primary Stroke Center Altoona Regional's Primary Stroke Center utilizes a multidisciplinary team of health care professionals that utilize established evidence based clinical practice guidelines to provide accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment for stroke. Stroke has been upgraded to a priority ambulance dispatch in Blair County - the same level as a heart attack. It is imperative that patients who are experiencing symptoms of a stroke, or "brain attack," receive urgent medical attention. Pre-hospital and EMS personnel are specialty trained to recognize and evaluate stroke victims and provide immediate transport for treatment. Janet Ashurst, RN BSN, Director of Stroke is very involved in Pre-Hospital Education and attends each Grand Rounds Session offered at Altoona Regional Health System to go over case reviews with EMS personnel. Altoona Regional's stroke-trained neurologists and neurosurgeons are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The neurologist and neurosurgeons are only two components of the stroke care team. Others include an emergency physician, emergency nurse, stroke nurse, critical care nurse, CT scan technician, lab technician, radiologist, respiratory therapist and a member from pastoral care. Our Acute Stroke Program Coordinator oversees the standards of care for acute stroke patients and provides education to nursing staff, patients and families. Radiologists, CT scan capabilities, and laboratory testing are available 24 hours a day, and Altoona Regional recently welcomed neuroradiologists to the stroke team. They are specifically trained in stroke and brain imaging techniques. A special Rapid Response Stroke Team has been established to respond swiftly to patients both in the

6 About Us: Medical Services (cont d) emergency department and elsewhere in the hospital who have stroke symptoms less than six hours old. The "Code Gray" pager system alerts team members to rush to the patient's bedside. Our Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department offers inpatient and outpatient physical, speech, occupational and recreational therapy. Home health care and followup services are also available. Center for Cardiac Care A comprehensive line of cardiology services is available at the Center for Cardiac Care, including open-heart surgery, cardiac catheterization, implantable cardiac defibrillators, stents, electrocardiograms, trans-esophageal echocardiography, stress testing and rehabilitation. The echocardiography lab provides a full range of echo studies, such as transesophageal, pediatric, intraoperative TEE, stress and transthoracic. With Mini-Maze surgery, doctors are able to permanently break the circuit of atrial fibrillation, the most common type of irregular heartbeat, in an easy to perform procedure. Mini-Maze can restore normal heart function and help patients with atrial fibrillation maintain an active, healthy lifestyle free from most medications and coumadin. Altoona Regional Health System has been named a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care for 2007 by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. Our facility's structure, processes and care outcomes were rigorously evaluated to be selected for this great recognition. We were the first to bring open-heart surgery to the area and we will continue to lead by providing state-of-the-art techniques close to home. Altoona Regional Health System has initiated the LIfeNet program with local EMS facilities which will enable Pre-Hospital personnel to transmit EKG s electronically to the medical command physician. This enables the Emergency Department staff to alert the Cardiac Cath team early to provide more immediate care to those patients in need. For more information on additional medical services offered by Altoona Regional Health System please visit our website at
