3 Special Features FEATURED SPEAKER L. Joseph Butterfield Lecture RICHARD J. MARTIN, MD, FAAP Joe Butterfield was an expert in coordinating the expertise and energies of his colleagues and predecessors while applying his own leadership skills to create new and effective strategies and solutions. His leadership resulted in the implementation of systems for health care education and health care delivery that saved many lives and improved the well-being of millions. The neonatal intensive care unit involves the efforts of a broad, multidisciplinary team of people. The 20th offering of this lecture will provide a history of the evolution of perinatal practice nationally and internationally, with emphasis on cost effective interventions which have improved neonatal survival across the globe. The Butterfield Lecture is supported by an endowment from Abbott Nutrition. Dr. Richard J. Martin is Professor of Pediatrics, Reproductive Biology, and Physiology & Biophysics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He was raised and educated in Australia, and received his medical degree from the University of Sydney School of Medicine. He is the first holder of the Drusinsky/ Fanaroff Chair in Neonatology, Rainbow Babies & Children s Hospital. Dr. Martin is a most sought after expert in the field of Developmental Respiratory Neurobiology, focused primarily on the subjects of apnea of prematurity, intermittent hypoxia, and both lung and airway injury. He has lectured widely and is a sought after speaker in the USA and worldwide. He is co-chair of a regional Neonatology conference held annually at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania, and of the International Neonatology Symposium held in Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. Martin is senior editor of the major neonatal text, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, along with Drs. Avroy A. Fanaroff and Michele C. Walsh. Also to his credit are approximately 200 first- and/or co-authored articles in peer-reviewed journals, and approximately 100 chapters and reviews published in well-known books in the medical field. He serves on numerous editorial boards, is past Chair of the Sub-Board in Neonatal/Perinatal Medicine of the American Board of Pediatrics, and has mentored a number of leaders in Neonatology in the USA and abroad. He is the 2017 recipient of the Virginia Apgar Award of the American Academy of Pediatrics Perinatal Section. SPECIAL CODING SEMINAR This seminar is designed to instruct neonatologists about CPT codes and how they are used in daily practice. Application of codes to various patient conditions and situations will be explored using audience response system (ARS) technology. Discussion will include recommendations from the audience on the needs and limitations of the current codes.
