Therapies for Advanced Heart Failure Left ventricular devices and/or heart transplant patients will receive appropriate follow up and care by providers knowledgeable in transplant medicine. The Management of Atrial Fibrillation and Stroke Patients Break Left Atrial Appendage Closure Device (percutaneous) does not require major cardiac surgery and has a faster recovery rate. It is a proven alternative to long-term warfarin therapy for stroke risk reduction in patients with atrial fibrillation. Bhakta, Pharm.D., BCPS Clinical Pharmacist Dignity Health St. Rose Dominican Hospitals Faculty Speaker & Planning Committee Member Dr. Ragini Bhakta is an Associate Professor at Roseman University of Health Sciences where she is involved in teaching cardiology and precepts students on an APPE for inpatient Cardiology. She completed her PGY-1 residency at the Long Beach VA and was a Clinical Pharmacist at the University of Kansas Hospital in Cardiology for almost 8 years before switching to academia. She grew up in a small town, Hawthorne Nevada, and is happy to call the state of Nevada home again. Steven Carter, NRP, CCT-P CQI Coordinator American Medical Response Faculty Speaker Mr. Steven Carter is a nationally registered Paramedic, a Critical Care Paramedic and an EMS Instructor who mostly specializes in Cardiology, Waveform Capnography, and Critical Care. He currently works with American Medical Response in Las Vegas, Nevada. Herbert Cordero-Yordan, MD Cardiologist HealthCare Partners Faculty Speaker & Planning Committee Member Dr. Herbert Cordero-Yordan is a practicing cardiologist in Las Vegas, Nevada with several hospital affiliations. Dr. Cordero received his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. He is board certified in Cardiology, Cardiovascular Diseases, Internal Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology. Dr. Cordero currently serves on the American Heart Association Las Vegas division Board of Directors.

He received his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his neurology residency training and internship at Valley Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kim Dokken, RN, BSN, MSN, MBA Director of Trauma and Stroke Programs Dignity Health St. Rose Dominican Hospitals Planning Committee Member Mary Helen Gianini, RN, BS Cardiovascular Database Coordinator Dignity Health St. Rose Dominican Hospitals Planning Committee Member Ms. Kim Dokken has been an RN for 31 years. Nursing background is in ED, ICU, PACU, trauma and stroke. Originally a diploma RN, Kim received her BSN from Minot State University located in North Dakota and her advanced degrees from Grand Canyon University located in Arizona. She has managed a variety of units including M/S, ED, and ICU. She gained trauma program management experience starting in 1997 and stroke program management experience in She is currently the Director of Trauma and Stroke Programs at St Rose Dominican. She has been with St Rose since Ms. Mary Helen Gianini has been with Dignity Health St. Rose in Southern Nevada for 15 years and has worked in cath lab until 2009 and transitioned to Database Coordinator for the Cardiology Department. Her duties have included seeking Accreditation as Chest Pain Center with PCI for the Siena Campus since That is when she became involved in helping to set up education for health care staff. This is Dignity Health s third year in partnership with American Heart Association in bringing cardiac and stroke education to South Nevada.

Gururaj, MD Cardiologist Nevada Heart and Vascular Center Faculty Speaker Sarah McCrea, EMTP, RN Administrative Officer Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Planning Committee Member Dr. Arjun Gururaj is a cardiologist affiliated with the Nevada Heart and Vascular Center. He attended Cornell University for his undergraduate degree and the University of Texas for medical school. He relocated to Boston for his postgraduate education, at which time he completed his training in Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology at Boston University School of Medicine. Initially remaining on faculty at Boston University, he became Co-director for Cardiac Science Education for the School of Medicine while teaching Fellows the latest techniques in arrhythmia management. He is one of a few physicians in the United States that hosts a national teaching course to help other Cardiologists learn the surgical techniques of heart failure device implantation. Ms. Sarah McCrea is a Registered Nurse and Paramedic, currently as an Administrative Officer with the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue. Hired in 1998, Ms. McCrea promoted through the ranks to include firefighter, paramedic, fire engineer, and Emergency Medical Services Quality Improvement Coordinator (EMS QIC). Ms. McCrea founded and serves on the board for Las Vegas CHIPs (Community Health Improvement Program), a private non-profit organization, providing social services to clients identified by first responders and advocating for and connecting the community s most vulnerable members with the services they need to experience improved health outcomes. Kelly Morrell, RN, BSN Director of Cardiovascular Services Sunrise Hospital and Sunrise Children s Hospital Planning Committee Member Ms. Kelly Morrell is an experienced Director of Cardiovascular Services and is responsible for daily operations of Cath Lab EKG, Echo, EEG, Care Assure, TAVR Program and Outpatient Cardiac Rehab. She s developed Outpatient Cardiac Rehab Program, oversaw renovated 7 Room Cardiac Cath Lab Department as well as Installation of 2 new labs (Peripheral and Electrophysiology). In addition, she has extensive experience in critical care settings that include CV Surgery, Cath Lab and ICU.

8 Faculty Biographies Sharon Sanchez, RN, MSNed Cardiovascular Educator Stroke Coordinator Diabetes Clinician Desert Springs Hospital Planning Committee Member Collin Sears, EMT Firefighter/Paramedic Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Faculty Speaker Ms. Sharon Sanchez ability to work in unison with staff, volunteers, and board of directors has shown throughout her 39 years of experience as registered nurse with 20 years in critical care unit. She currently works for Desert Springs Hospital as a Cardiovascular Educator, Stroke Coordinator, and Diabetes Clinician. Mr. Collin Sears is a Nationally Registered Paramedic primarily serving the community of Las Vegas, Nevada since Texas born, Mr. Sears has demonstrated a long-standing passion for emergency services, with an emphasis on all elements of a first responder, including emergency medical services, firefighting, and law enforcement. As a firefighter/paramedic for Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, Mr. Sears has taken pride in working in Battalion 1, assigned on the most heavily tasked resources. His peripheral responsibilities with Las Vegas & Rescue include curriculum development as a primary EMS instructor and field training officer (FTO) for new precepting paramedics. Erik Sirulnick, MD, FACC Cardiologist HealthCare Partners Faculty Speaker Disclosures: Speakers Bureau: Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pfizer Inc. Dr. Erik Sirulnick is a cardiologist with HealthCare Partners. He attended Brown University School of Medicine and completed his fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine and Cardio Electrophysiology at Stanford University. Dr. Sirulnick has contributed to several peer reviewed publications as well two chapters in Anesthesiologist's Manual of Surgical Procedures.

Slattery, MD, FACEP, FAEMS Associate Professor/ Research Director Department of Emergency Medicine University of Nevada School of Medicine University Medical Center of Southern Nevada Deputy Chief/EMS Medical Director Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Faculty Speaker TJ Smith, NR EMT-P EMS Training Officer City of Henderson Fire Department Faculty Speaker Dr. Slattery is an emergency physician who is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and Subspecialty Board Certified in EMS. He serves as a Deputy Chief and the EMS Medical Director for Las Vegas Fire and Rescue. Dr. Slattery is also an Associate Professor and Director of Emergency Medicine Research for the University of Nevada School of Medicine's and UNLV School of Medicine s Department of Emergency Medicine. He works clinically in the emergency department at University Medical Center of Southern Nevada and he provides medical oversight for the Casino AED project. Nationally, he serves on the American Heart Association Mission: Lifeline Subcommittee, the National Oversight Board for the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES) Registry, and serves as an Associate Editor for The Journal of Emergency Medicine. His research interests are on the pre-ems period of cardiac arrest, post-resuscitation care, airway management, and ambulance safety. Mr. TJ Smith is an EMS Training Officer for the City of Henderson Fire Department. He has been in EMS for over 13 years, 11 of which were with the Henderson Fire Department. He was a firefighter/paramedic FTO prior to accepting the EMS Training Officer position. He is extremely passionate about stroke care and management, which led him to implement a new stroke initiative within the city of Henderson, with hopes it will spread through the Las Vegas valley and ultimately, throughout the nation.

10 Faculty Biographies Logan Cole Sondrup, MD Staff Physician Fremont Emergency Services/TeamHealth Las Vegas Medical Director Community Ambulance Chief of Emergency Medicine Dignity Health St. Rose Dominican Hospital San Martín Campus Faculty Speaker Dr. Logan Cole Sondrup graduated with honors from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 2007 and competed his Emergency Medicine residency training at Ohio State University in He is currently a staff physician with Fremont Emergency Services/ TeamHealth Las Vegas, the Medical Director of Community Ambulance, and Chief of Emergency Medicine at Dignity Health St. Rose Dominican Hospital- San Martin campus. Howie Tran, MD Cardiologist UC San Diego Health Assistant Professor of Medicine Division of Cardiovascular Medicine UC San Diego School of Medicine Faculty Speaker Dr. Howie Tran is a board-certified cardiologist who specializes in treating patients with advanced heart failure. As an assistant professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Dr. Tran instructs residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He has coauthored numerous journal articles, and his work has appeared in Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Circulation: Heart Failure. Dr. Tran did his medical training in advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support and transplant cardiology at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He completed a general cardiology fellowship at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where he also completed a residency in internal medicine. Dr. Tran earned his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. He is board-certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease.
