4 NHS Lothian Ophthalmic Imaging Technician (Band 4) 37.5 hours per week Salary 20,302-22,910 An opportunity has arisen for an Ophthalmic Imaging Technician to join our team within the Medical Photography Service at NHS Lothian You will join a team of 19 staff who are committed to providing a comprehensive Medical Photography / Video / Graphic Design Service to NHS Lothian. The Medical Photography Service is currently based at five hospital sites, four within Edinburgh and one in Livingston. You will be based at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Edinburgh, and will undertake ophthalmic imaging duties. You will assist in the provision of high quality diagnostic imaging for Ophthalmology Services across the organisation and be required to work at St John s Hospital, Livingston also on a rota basis. Applicants should possess an HND in Photography. Consideration will also be given to applicants who have an equivalent level media / imaging qualification and/or proven relevant experience working within the healthcare setting. Ideally applicants should be experienced in digital imaging workflow and be familiar using image management systems. : Ophthalmic Imaging Technician 4

Job Identification Job Title: Ophthalmic Imaging Technician Responsible to: Senior Clinical Photographer (Specialist) Accountable to: Head of Service, Medical Photography Directorate: Scheduled Care Operating Division: UHS Job Reference: Last Update: 2. Job Purpose To support the provision of a professional cost effective, efficient clinical photographic, and multimedia service to NHS Lothian. Assist in the provision of high quality diagnostic imaging for Ophthalmology Services within NHS Lothian. 3. Dimensions A full time NHS Lothian Medical Photography Service is located over the following main sites: The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh Lauriston Building, Edinburgh The Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Edinburgh St John s Hospital, Livingston The Ophthalmic Photography service is provided at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Edinburgh and St John s Hospital, Livingston. Organisational Position General Manager (Clinical Services) Head of Service, Medical Photography Senior Clinical Photographer (Specialist) Clinical Photographer / Ophthalmic Photographer Ophthalmic Imaging Technician Senior Medical Photography Assistant 5. Role of the Department Provide a multi-skilled clinical technical service as part of the healthcare team. The service is available to NHS Lothian staff producing clinical and other imaging and illustrative material specifically in the areas of patient care, medical education and research. A wide range of technology is used to provide a modern efficient service. Services include: Photography to specialties such as Dermatology, ENT, Max-Fax, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics and Plastic Surgery. Ophthalmic imaging is undertaken at The Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion and St John s Hospital sites. (Colour fundus, FFA, OCT and Slit lamp photography). Dedicated Paediatric photography is undertaken at The Royal Hospital for Sick Children. Video production: training, diagnostic aids, clinical teaching, patient education. Video editing suite located at The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Ophthalmic Imaging Technician 8
9 6. Key Result Areas 1. Work as part of a team, often under pressure, to meet deadlines. 2. Undertake Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging and colour fundus photography of patients requested by healthcare professionals for clinical assessment, records, teaching, publication and research. 3. To prepare designated rooms for imaging ensuring compliance with service protocols and health and safety legislation. 4. Upload images from the main capture systems to Lothian wide database to ensure data is securely stored and backed up 5. Undertake Visual Acuity testing (if required), using logmar / snellen charts to ascertain a patients level of vision. 6. To support learning of others by demonstration of role e.g. to work placement/experience students and supporting training and mentoring of new/less experienced staff at an equivalent level. 7. Effective patient communication: dealing with complex, sensitive information requiring empathy and reassurance 8. Undertake clinical administrative duties to support all areas of the ophthalmic photography service including provision of statistics, entry of patient demographics into OCT system and maintenance of associated records 9. To assist in clinical audit as required 10. Work within NHS Lothian policies, standard operational procedures, relevant legislation and codes of professional conduct / practice ensuring compliance at all times 11. Observe all relevant Health & Safety requirements as directed by NHS Lothian ensuring compliance and safety of self and others at all times 12. Assignment and Review of Work Workload is generated by the specific needs of each area including clinicians, nursing staff, and health care professionals. Professional accountability to the Head of Service, Medical Photography. Senior Clinical Photographer (Specialist) will provide supervision as required and assign and review tasks. The post holder will be required to plan and prioritise workload and use own initiative when required. Annual PDP undertaken by Senior Clinical Photographer (Specialist) 9. Decisions and Judgements Guided by NHS Lothian policies and standard departmental operating procedures To undertake analysis of condition being imaged, exercising judgment to determine the most appropriate method of imaging from a range of options, taking into consideration the well being of the patient. Within level of competency interpret images that are captured requiring understanding of what is to be image captured as per clinical staff requests, however, seek more specialised advice from senior members of the team in areas of uncertainty regarding ophthalmic imaging protocols / procedures.

Patients Communicate OCT procedure and processes / sensitive information requiring empathy and reassurance and overcoming barriers to understanding. Receive information concerning patient history, sensitive issues, and some patients with special needs, accommodates patients views and preferences with regard to cultural differences. Trainee / Students Supervision / mentoring. Assisting with the education and training to enable them to carry out their tasks in a professional manner.
