2 INVITATION FROM THE ARNA PRESIDENT It is my privilege to invite all nurses to the 2015 Arkansas Nurses Association s Convention and Membership Assembly meeting. The convention is ARNA s major educational event that brings nurses together from across the state in a spirit of collegiality and scholarship. Nurses in various roles and practice settings made a commitment to their professional colleagues by submitting abstracts for presentations and posters. They will share their special expertise in discussing new and innovative practice roles, examining current nursing research studies, and providing clinical topics to meet the learning needs of participants, from the new practitioner to the seasoned veteran. We thank them for their willingness to advance the nursing profession as an evidence-based, caring profession..the convention also includes several special events which should not be missed. The ANPAC Luncheon, Friday, Oct. 23. The Convention also includes the Membership Assembly meeting to discuss issues and events that impact nursing and ARNA....Plan to visit the Embassy Suites Exhibit Hall where representatives from various companies and agencies display products that enhance nursing practice. Please support these friends of nursing as they help us become aware of new technologies and resources to improve and facilitate nursing practice. The ARNA Convention is primarily designed for professional nurses who work in any practice role or setting, including staff nurses, nurse managers/administrators, advanced practice nurses, community health nurses, educators, researchers, and entrepreneurs. Allied health personnel will also benefit from the information presented. The program will help participants to: * enhance clinical knowledge and skills to influence successful patient outcomes; * explore innovative approaches within various nursing roles that will promote continued growth and advancement; * investigate, synthesize, and apply nursing research to their professional practice; * consider the developing workplace environments and technologies that will impact on future nursing practice; and * develop a supportive network of peers. * Explain the impact of healthcare reform on the nursing profession and patient care Provider Accreditation and Continuing Education Credit: South Central Accreditation Program is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC COA). Accreditation status does not apply endorsement by ARNA and ANCC COA of any commercial product displayed in conjunction with the convention. ARNA will award the following contact hours to participants who have attended and successfully completed continuing nursing education requirement. 3 FEATURED CONVENTION SPEAKER KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dr. Angela Louise Penury Green, PhD, APRN, NNP-BC, FAHA The Arkansas Nurses Association welcomes its 2015 ARNA keynote speaker Dr. Angela Green is Vice President of Performance Improvement at Arkansas Children s Hospital with an adjunct faculty appointment in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Nursing. In addition, she is a certified Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) and a 2013 recipient of the Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow award. Dr. Green is a nurse leader with over 25 years of experience in children s healthcare. She has held a variety of roles including staff nurse, advanced practice nurse, academic faculty, Director of Nursing Research, Director of Professional Practice and interim Chief Nursing Officer. She has extensive leadership in organizational change, evidence-based practice, and performance improvement. Some of her accomplishments include leadership for campus wide error prevention training, implementation of the organization wide Clinical Practice Council, development of a highly successful evidence-based practice mentoring program, and implementation of numerous evidence-based practice changes focused on issues such as pain management and hourly rounds. Dr. Green is active in research with a focus on psychosocial outcomes after pediatric heart transplantation and evidencebased practice implementation. Dr. Green is active in many other professional organizations including the Society of Pediatric Nurses and the Southern Nursing Research Society. Reducing Falls and Fall-Related Injuries through a Falls Team, Individualized Care Plans, and Utilization of a Falls Board Hazel Rowe, BSN, RN-BC develop a fall prevention program and reduce falls rates as well as prevent major fall-related injuries. 4. Improving Care for the Mentally Ill: Helping Providers to follow Clinical Recommendations with Implementation of A Clinical Reminder Patricia Griffith, ANP, MSN identify the metabolic effects of atypical antipsychotic medication and current recommendations for monitoring metabolic labs using a clinical reminder. 5. Improving Patient Safety through a Fire Risk Assessment Sonya Jackson, BSN, RN be well informed about the three elements that are capable of producing a surgical fire. After education through various teaching methods, the learner will be able to teach others as well as incorporate the fire risk score during the surgical time out. 6. Military Sexual Trauma: Healthcare Provider Knowledge and Training Leads to Better Outcomes Lana Brown, PhD, RN gain knowledge of military sexual trauma including screening tools, symptoms, and treatments. 7. Non-Ventilator Hospital Acquired Pneumonia: The role of HealthCare Providers in Monitoring and Prevention Adam Steele, BSN, RN describe non-ventilator hospital acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP) as well as its monitoring needs and intervention for prevention. 8. Ill effects of energy drinks Bliss Parker, BSN, RN identify the negative effects of consuming energy drink on health. 9..Promoting Nurse and Student Health through the Development of a Self-Care Wellness Routine Utilizing Essential Oils and Relaxation Leigh Snead, MSN, BSN, RN; Kimberly Porter, MNSc, RN, BA care for themselves in order to more effectively care for others. Teaching nurses and allowing hands-on practice with essential oils and relaxation techniques will enable the learners to learn new methods of self-care. 10. The Who, What, Why, Where, and How of Effective Communication in Health Care: Promoting Satisfaction among Physicians, Nurses, and Patients Susan Jones, RN recognize communication barriers and implement strategies to improve communication within the healthcare setting. 12. Establishing Motivational Interviewing (MI) Learning Communities to Enhance Provider Competence and Confidence to Integrate MI into Daily Practice. Sandra R. Brown, DNP, RN gain a perspective of the relevance of Motivational Interviewing and its implications in healthcare and how MI skills can be enhanced following an immersion or one-time training. 13.
