1 SUMMER PROGRAM 2017 Dear Applicant: Thank you for your interest in a 2017 Variety s Peaceable Kingdom Retreat Summer Intern position. This fast-paced experiential learning opportunity is designed for undergraduate students who have completed at least their freshman year of college and are in good standing at an academic institution. This is a paid internship, and students may arrange to receive academic credit as an internship through their faculty advisor if they choose to. Variety s mission is to empower children with special needs in Texas. To accomplish this mission, we promote the educational, recreational and therapeutic benefits of nature through our programs, serve the whole family, and continue to explore better ways of serving the children with special needs or chronic illnesses and their families. During the Summer Program, children with special needs or chronic illnesses visit the Retreat by arrangement of their treating hospital or supporting organization. The hospital and/or supporting organization selects the campers to come on the basis of those who will be best served by the experience. The participating users furnish personnel and counselors, which are not employees of Variety s Peaceable Kingdom. Presently, there are 11 weeks of summer sessions scheduled for the 2017 summer. An estimated campers and user group staff use the retreat during week-long summer sessions. Based on a long standing partnership with hospitals and organizations, the Variety s Peaceable Kingdom Staff strives to provide a safe, highly energetic, flexible and physically stimulating atmosphere to allow campers of all ages to reach their full potential. Specifically, our goals are: To instill in campers and guests a greater appreciation for self and a respect for others. To promote team-building through creative, well-planned and appropriate group activities. To create opportunities for exploration of new skills. To provide groups with a trained and equipped staff eager to accomplish program goals. In this packet, you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about the Summer Program, as well as the necessary application materials. Your completed application packet must be received by March 30, 2017 and will be reviewed by Variety s Peaceable Kingdom Management Team. To apply for Variety s Peaceable Kingdom Internship or Summer Program Assistant Full Time position(s), a current resume, an official copy of your college transcript(s), completed recommendation forms, and a completed application form are required. All positions will be required to have certified lifeguard training and CPR Training, which must be obtained prior to the start of the current summer program. Please talk with Laura Nickel for exceptions regarding lifeguarding certification. A completed background check must be completed prior to start date. Applications for the Summer Program Staff must be postmarked by March 30, Successful applicants will be contacted for an interview and all applicants should be notified of our intent by April 13, 2017 at the latest. Can I receive college credit? To inquire about receiving college credit, please check with your faculty advisor at your school. Do you provide housing? We provide on-site housing; however, there is limited space. Certain positions will be required to live on-site for the duration of the Summer Program. This will be discussed during the interview. All summer interns must provide their own transportation to the retreat. Summer interns do not provide transportation for retreat attendees. How long is the Summer Program? It begins on May 19, 2017 and ends on August 18, The first two weeks will include training on all aspects of the Summer Program. What will I be doing? Each position has primary responsibilities; however, all positions will overlap in some duties. If you are accepted for an Internship or Program Assistant position, you will assist with all aspects of the Summer Program including greeting campers, program activities (set-up, facilitate, clean-up), scheduled aquatic activities and daily operations. 3 Job Title: Summer Program Intern Reports To: Director of Programs and Facilities at VPKRC Type of Position: Classification: Hours approximately 70/week Full-time Part-time Seasonal Intern Exempt Nonexempt Time: Each week, normally Sunday evening through Friday evening, as determined by VPKRC Director Position Outline: Responsible for supporting the VPKRC Director of Programs and Facilities in all aspects of the coordination of the summer program currently being run at the Retreat. Coordinate, implement and schedule activities with organizations throughout the summer, as needed. The Summer Program Intern will meet all groups on Retreat grounds and assist in implementing their schedule & activities until their time at the Retreat is complete. See that all materials for activities are ready for use by all of the participating groups. Help the VPKRC Director of Programs and Facilities in the direction and utilization of volunteers to adequately support the Summer Program. Support lifeguard duties at the pool area, rope course instruction and animal program duties, as needed. Assist in the food preparation and handling, as needed. Assist in any fundraising activities and special events, related to the Summer Retreat Program (planning, setup, cleanup, etc.). Provide tours of the Retreat on an as-needed basis. Any other duties, as assigned. Education, Licensing and Certification Requirements High School diploma or equivalent education. CPR Certification. Lifeguarding Certification from American Red Cross. Rope Course Certification (provided by Peaceable Kingdom during staff training) Food Handlers card (provided by Peaceable Kingdom during staff training) Valid US Driver License Must complete and pass a criminal background check Must complete a child abuse prevention course with a minimal passing grade of 80% Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. to waist level. Stand for a minimum of 20 minutes to a maximum of two hours in a given period of time. Must be able to bend at waist, in order to access a file cabinet. Must be able to swim 50 feet without interruption or conclusion. Must be able to tread water for five minutes without interruption or conclusion.

Reasonable Cause - Variety will require a drug and/or alcohol test of any person suspected of using or being under the influence of an illicit drug or alcohol. Reasonable cause testing will be initiated whenever it is believed, through observation of specific physical and/or behavioral symptoms, that an employee has used an illegal substance and/or abused a legal drug or alcohol.
