3 Data Collection Methods The information presented here was obtained from a survey of all prospective employers of psychiatrists. Surveys were sent to all medical practice entities with at least one psychiatrist. Surveys were also sent to all hospitals, including VA hospitals, mental health clinics, state institutions, and other agencies known to provide mental health services. Respondents were asked to report all full time (35+ hours/week) and half time (20 hours/week) positions for which there were opportunities available. The results of the survey represent a 100% response rate. Physician Consultation Services Medical Practice Development Program The Office of Statewide Clinical Education Programs provides consultative services to physicians interested in Iowa medical practice opportunities. The services include: Advice on practice site selection criteria; Community profiles and provider rosters; Confidential inquiries regarding specific practice opportunities; Identification of important considerations concerning specific opportunities; Practice management consultations; Negotiation assistance with established providers, hospital representatives and community recruitment groups; Substantive reviews of contracts; and Assistance for providers after they begin a new practice. 4 How to Use the Directory The Directory of Iowa Psychiatry Practice Opportunities lists all opportunities for psychiatrists by community. To interpret the listings within each section, please note that each community listing includes the following: Community population (2010 US Census Bureau data) Total number of physicians in the community (with the number of psychiatrists in parentheses) Total number of acute care hospital beds in the community designated for psychiatry admissions Location of the opportunity by region of Iowa as indicated by the initials below the city name, i.e., Northwest (NW), North Central (NC), Northeast (NE), Southwest (SW), South Central (SC), and Southeast () In the Contact section, further detail regarding the specific position(s) is provided. E mail addresses are listed when available. The individual listings indicate whether the position is for adult or child psychiatrists, and whether the opportunity is full time or half time. Other professional opportunities listed in this directory are identified in bold, and include correctional facility, federal/va, psychiatric hospitalist, state health, and teaching opportunities. ii
