2 SBAP : A Year in Review Reimbursement Claims Rise 10 Percent SBAP continues to provide schools and school districts across the Commonwealth with a much-needed and important source of revenue. The funds allow schools to cover additional costs related to the enhancement of special education programs and services. PA schools received more than $127 million in Medicaid reimbursement during the school year. This represents an increase of approximately 10 percent over the previous school year. To see a breakdown of the $127 million by school and school district, visit: Attendance Jumps at Regional Trainings Training remains crucial to a successful, efficient, and integrity-driven schoolbased program. We were pleased with the 19 percent increase in attendance at the regional training sessions. PDE and Leader collaborated with the PA Department of Public Welfare (DPW) staff to develop the content for the regional trainings and all parties played a key role in presenting the material, addressing concerns, and responding to questions. Audits Bring Quality Assurance to Forefront The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency charged with overseeing all Medicaid programs in the U.S., continues to audit state Medicaid programs, including school-based programs. CMS is working closely with states to ensure state Medicaid programs are in compliance with federal policies and regulations. During the school year, DPW s Bureau of Program Integrity selected a few schools and conducted a review of their school-based Medicaid programs. Although quality assurance has always been a main focus of SBAP, the reviews have brought the importance of program compliance to the forefront. PDE and DPW, in conjunction with Leader Services, will continue to aggressively promote the importance of quality assurance and work closely with schools to ensure their adherence to SBAP policies and regulations. 2

3 A review for PDE Growth History The graph below is representative of the SBAP reimbursement funds school entities recovered over the last six years. Thanks to the ongoing support of PDE and DPW, as well as the efforts of participating school entities, reimbursement under this program has continued to grow steadily.
