2 What is credentialling? A process of professional validation by which an individual nurse may be designated as having met established professional nursing practice standards. Credentialling is a voluntary undertaking initiated by the individual nurse. Offered to DANA members and non-members
3 Advantages of credentialling Validates your experience, knowledge and expertise; Distinguishes you as an experienced drug and alcohol nurse; Enhances your professional confidence; Retain a strong professional identity as a CDAN; Enhances career opportunities; Provide for a consistent standard of practice; Contributes to better patient outcomes; Enhanced peak body flow on benefits to members;
4 Challenges of credentialling Cost - $120 DANA members / $300 non-dana members Manage consistency in assessment process and appropriate make up of credentialling advisory committee (CAC) Time commitment Developing your application CAC managed by volunteers Time frames needed for assessment
5 Where do we start? Download a copy of the Pathways to Credentialling Application Package and Guidelines from the DANA website Thoroughly read the package first Mandatory and Elective criteria Credentialling mentor is available if you have questions Must be submitted electronically look at the detail in the package Patience! It won t happen overnight, but it will happen!

7 M1 Peer Review (20 points) Select a peer reviewer: A professional, independent colleague; Must have known you in a professional capacity for at least 3 yrs; Must have worked directly with you within the last 3 yrs; Must have managed you or worked closely with you. Will be asked to provide comment on your professional, clinical or management practices and interpersonal skills.
8 M2 Current CV (10 points) Your Curriculum Vitae should address the following: Professional Qualifications; Awards; Employment History (highlighting recent practice requirements); Continuing Education and Other Courses; Professional Activities; Publications; Education and Research; Quality Improvement Activities; Other Activities.
9 Elective Criteria (Total 80 points)

11 E1 Portfolio (25-30 points) The portfolio submission must contain only ONE of the following: Quality Improvement (QI) Activity (25 points); Drug and Alcohol Policy/Procedure (30 points); or Case Study (25 points).

15 E2 Education Project (25 points) Provide a detailed account of an educational program/project (e.g. health promotion or staff/patient teaching) you have implemented, together with details of the following: Background; Objectives; Design (including intended audience, relevance of topic, learning principles; Implementation and teaching methods); Evaluation (type and results). Include any relevant examples of educational material/aids that were developed in conjunction with your project within an appendix at the end of your application.
16 E3 Personal Statement / Critical Review (25 points) Provide a personal statement that examines your own involvement in professional activities related to D&A Nursing. Include your level and duration of involvement at this level. Provide a critical review and personal reflection of your own contribution to D&A Nursing. Include at least 3 of the following: Publications i.e. journal articles, books; Conference presentations / attendance; Membership of a professional body, including your level of involvement; Participation in any significant/relevant education or research endeavours; Major projects; Any awards or grants you have received; Any continuing education you have undertaken; Mentoring projects; Clinical supervision (supervisor or supervisee); Any other activities or achievements that you believe will support your application.
17 E4 Reflective Narrative (25 points) Provide a comprehensive example of reflective learning from your D&A Nursing practice and describe the strategies you used to achieve your learning objectives. Your example should describe: What was the situation? Why did you go about it that way? Description of observations, thoughts and feelings; What was the outcome? What was done well and not so well? Challenges and barriers; Reflection of behaviours, interactions, feelings and thoughts; Review of strengths and limitations; What would you do differently next time? What interventions have been put into place to prevent this from happening again?
18 E5 Giving Back (max 10 points) Have you taken an active role within DANA and partnered organisations during your membership? How you have given back to DANA and the D&A Nursing specialty? For example: Membership of DANA for up to 3 consecutive years (points awarded for each consecutive year of membership up to 3 years); Active participation in DANA committees and working parties; Representation on the DANA Management Committee; Presentation of papers or talks at DANA sponsored events and conferences; Representation of DANA with partnered organisations (such as: APSAD, NZCMHN, DAPAANZ)
19 Part 2 Application Forms Form 1 Applicant application form and declaration Must be completed and scanned in to accompany your electronic application Form 2 Marking Guide Use this to check you have completed enough elements to make up a minimum of 110 points for your application and help the assessors know what parts you have completed Form 3 Instructions for Peer Reviewer and Peer Review Form Peer review must be submitted independently from your application, no later than 2 weeks after the date of your submission. Form 4 Final Checklist Complete prior to submitting your application and ensure that you have all components included.
20 Questions??? Don t despair! You can do this! It may take some time, but it s worth it! Quote from one of my colleagues, who has recently been credentialled: I feel very honoured to be able to say I am now a Credentialed Drug and Alcohol Nurse. I am also a Credentialed Mental Health Nurse, but to me, being able to call myself a CDAN is very special. I encourage all nurses, even if you do not have formal AOD qualifications like me, to apply to be a CDAN, it is well worth it! Elly Staunton-McKenzie
