``` HUDHUD RELIEF & REHABILITATION ACTIVITY REPORT Srujanavani is a registered non-profit and non-government organization working in the areas of man making, rural development, education and other social issues. Centered at Visakhapatnam of Andhra Pradesh, its members spread over all parts of India, even across the border, carrying out its mission. All its activities are mainly carried out in Visakhapatnam Vasudha, a home for homeless children, Spoorthi- study centre for slum area children, Saparya an old age home, etc. Srujanavani is working in all the ZPH (Govt) Schools of Madugula, Cheedikada and Chodavaram mandals of Visakhapatnam dist augmenting the educational system through direct intervention measures through running regular study centres in the name of Yuvakiran, conducting Science fairs, Workshops, training programs etc. Srujanavani is also working on Community empowerment programs like Skill development and mobilization activities. Apart from regular activities we are in the front line for both relief and rehabilitation of natural and manmade calamities. As part of this we executed Hud-Hud cyclone relief activities. Recent cyclonic havoc that swept past the city of Visakhapatnam, left the city in disarray, uprooting the electric poles, telephonic poles and any other significant means of virtual communication that bridges the people to the external world and their connectivity. Though the government has been exceptional in reviving the necessary services, the officials are limited by the protocols, thereby limiting the agency s ability to cater to the needs of the remote regions which are equally effected as that of the regions mentioned by the Government orders. Srujanavani planned, executed and strived to bring relief to the affected through some of the activities shared below: SURVEY ANALYSIS: Post cyclone, Srujanavani Team has done survey in 7 mandals - Bheemili, Paravada, Atchuthapuram, Yelamanchili, Rambilli, Cheedikada and Madugula Mandals of Visakhapatnam district. Important primary findings are: In fishermen community fishing Boats, Nets, Sheds and Huts got damaged. Accessible areas were getting more relief support as compared to remote villages. Aid was not properly distributed due to poor distribution strategy. Public property got damaged like Greenery, Telecommunication, Electricity and other Govt. infrastructure, etc. Health facilities are more needed in remote villages. Farmers lost their crops like Sugar cane, Paddy, coconut plantation, social forestry and other plantations. Power has been restored by Government in some areas only but inaccessibly areas like Tribal and foot hill areas power supply restoration will take months time. Lot of debris on city roads and institutions blocked roads and affected normal operations.
Deputy DEO Ms Renuka consulted Srujanavani to know about the damage to infrastructure in Govt schools. We assessed the damages due to cyclone in 10 schools We are approaching donors and companies to assist us in rebuilding the school infrastructure. RELIEF ACTIVITIES : 1. Food Distribution: Basis our survey, we identified villages located 55 km away from city and near to sea coast - Gajireddypalem, Thotaveedhi from Rambilli Mandal, Visakhapatnam District., where basic requirements like food, milk and water were not available. Around 210 families were identified and Coupons were distributed in advance to needy people. On Team Srujanavani reached the villages with the support of local police and distributed 210 liters of milk and food packets to the needy. 2. Cleaning Campaign 2.1 District Hospital Cleaning (KGH): Cyclone has left the King George Hospital devastated filling the premises with vegetarian masses and fallen trees affecting normal functioning. Most of the patients faced inconvenience to reach wards, blood banks and labs. On a team of 12 Srujanavani members BEFORE AFTER
volunteered to remove debris from Gynecology ward, Maternity ward, Blood bank, Diagnostic lab and casualty with the support of our rented vehicle. Hospital staff provided full cooperation and appreciated the work done by Srujanavani to create hygienic and clean premises. 2.2 Loyola old age home at Pendurthy: Loyola oldage home is a home for the homeless located in Pendurthy, where 60 inmates reside for a living. Most of them are totally bed ridden and they require continuous physical assistance for their natural calls and daily requirements. Recent havoc has out-shaped the premises leaving inmates scared and unsecured. On a team of 25 Srujanavani members & Volunteers volunteered to clean the premises to remove fallen trees, debris and cleaned the cooking area. Volunteers repaired the asbestos roof to the extent possible and helped in shifting the cots and mattresses for the inmates in a make-shift arrangement. 2.3 Indira Gandhi Zoological Park: Cyclone devastated the zoo and left in very bad condition with lot of debris and fallen trees. Srujanavani mobilized 200 volunteers from various colleges and NSS. Red FM helped in spreading the information about activity and invited volunteers. Zoo cleaning activity was done on 26 th Oct, nos. of animal enclosures were cleaned. Volunteers actively involved with a common mission to Rebuild Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, Vizag. College students from Gayathri Vidya Parishad, Gitam University, Andhra University, MVGR Engineering college, Pyda Engineering college, Raghu Engineering college, Lendi Engineering college, Gowri Degree college, Pyda Degree college and
Govt.Polytechnic, Visakhapatnam volunteered for the programme. Participation certificates were given to all the students. 3.0 Health Services We surveyed 5 mandals and found people were suffering from basic ailments especially in the tribal and fishermen colonies. The root cause may be attributed to severe shortage of drinking water and people had to depend upon whatever meagre sources left to meet their daily needs. Due to unhygienic conditions surrounding the habitat, epidemics and microbial infections took their turns. We conducted medical camps in the affected areas to treat the basic ailments and also provided preventive medicines. As a part of this drive we conducted a medical camp catering to 5 villages in Raambilli & Atchutapuram
mandals on 21 st Oct A total of 130 patients (including 30 children) were treated in this medical camp for various ailments like Diarrhoea, Fever, Gastric problems and Allergies. Dr.P. Giri volunteered to treat patients in this camp. On 23 rd Oct 2014 another medical camp was conducted at Konam panchayat. This medical camp treated patients from 10 Tribal villages. A total of 150 patients got treatment, of which 40 patients were children. Children suffered with fevers and adults were affected with fevers, dysentery, skin, cough and cold, injuries, gastric, body pains, etc. We informed Health Assistant of CHEEDIKADA Public Health Centre and he too participated in this camp and took 15 blood samples for examination. 50 % of medicines were sponsored from KHALSA AID organisation. We distributed 50 bottles of Sodium Hypochlorite solution for drinking water disinfection to four of the local ASHA Workers. 4.0 Solar lamps distribution Team Srujanavani resolved to survey the remote locations to study the difficulties faced by them post cyclone. The primary data revealed that the villages within the sub plane areas has no access to alternative power source and grid power may resume after two months. Tribal villages of Cheedikada and Madugula mandal were severely affected and are in need of alternative sources of power. This has left them in total darkness leaving them against the fury of nature. With the support of Mr. L.Thimmarasu and team from Hyderabad (AIS), we have distributed solar lights to 100 families on in Guduvada, Vakapalli villages of
Cheedikada Mandal. On we conducted phase-ii distribution programme for another 100 families at Jagulapalem, Panasagedda and Mallipadu. A team of 21 volunteers participated in this activity. We are thankful to Thrive Solar Energy Pvt Limited and Artic organization, Srikakulam for supplying the required stock upon payment in a short time. On , we conducted phase-iii activity to cater 125 families located near Julampalli and konam panchayath with sponsorship from IBM, Vizag employees. IBM vizag director Mr. Kiran participated along with 6 employees from IBM. 5.0 Bala Vikasa Foundation Restoration work: Bala Vikasa foundation is a Bridge school located at Baadi peta, Visakhapatnam. Bridge BEFORE school room roof asbestos sheets were damaged due to HUDHUD cyclone. Srujanavani supported Bala Vikasa foundation by restoring the roof to regularize the academic classes. AFTER
