1 The MSUCOM SCS Core Competencies Self-Assessment The following pages contain various versions of the SCS Core Competencies Self- Assessment instrument developed by Dr. Eric D. Zemper. It is designed to provide residency program directors and DMEs with a means of formative and summative evaluation regarding attainment of AOA/ACGME Core Competency skills by individual residents. It also can be used to provide summative evaluation of a residency program with regard to Core Competencies. The questions in this instrument are derived directly from the wording for all of the AOA/ACGME Core Competencies. This instrument has been validated by a study showing that, as would be expected, the scores on the instrument increase with increasing years of experience. Administration of the instrument: The instrument should be printed and administered to each resident within the first month that they begin their residency training, and then again at the end of each academic year until graduation from the program. A copy of the completed and scored form should be given to the resident for his/her portfolio and a copy retained by the program director. There also is a version of this instrument that can be used by program faculty to rate individual residents if desired. Scoring: The scores from each of the items in the instrument are totaled, and a mean score calculated (to at least two decimal places). Interpretation: As indicated by the validity study for this instrument, the mean scores for an individual should show a pattern of increasing with increasing years of experience. This pattern was shown for the self-assessment instrument used by residents, with a parallel pattern from faculty who evaluated the same residents. The scores from the initial evaluation and each succeeding yearly evaluation provide a formative evaluation of a resident s attainment of Core Competency skills as he/she progresses through the residency program, and the score on the final administration at graduation provides a summative evaluation. Is there a pattern of increasing selfassessment scores (and a parallel increase in the director/attending ratings, if used) as the residents progress through the residency program? If not, is this an

2 indication of a problem that needs to be addressed in the residency program? These evaluations can be used as a form of summative evaluation of the residency programs as well, providing a demonstration to AOA/ACGME that the program is successful in inculcating the Core Competencies over the course of the residency training, if there indeed is a pattern of increasing ratings over time. The instrument: The SCS Core Competency Self-Assessment instrument is presented below, with various versions in the following order: The 28-item Core Competency Self-Assessment instrument to be used by individual residents in AOA programs and ACGME programs with Osteopathic Recognition. The 28-item Core Competency Self-Assessment instrument to be used by faculty to assess residents in AOA programs and ACGME programs with Osteopathic Recognition. The 26-item Core Competency Self-Assessment instrument to be used by individual residents in ACGME programs without Osteopathic Recognition. The only difference between this instrument and the first instrument noted above is that the first two items on OPP are deleted. The 26-item Core Competency Self-Assessment instrument to be used by faculty to assess residents in ACGME programs without Osteopathic Recognition. Again, the only difference between this instrument and the second instrument noted above is that the first two items on OPP are deleted. For the information of Program Directors and DMEs, the final version shown below (not for use in assessments) contains notations on what specific Core Competencies are associated with each item in the instrument. (If you are using the ACGME version of the self-assessment, remember that the ACGME version does not contain the first two items seen here.) If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Eric D. Zemper (zemp@hc.msu.edu or ).
