In Memoriam 2015 Ms. Andiswa Wonxie and Mr. Aaron Cupido It is with a great sadness that we report that our dearly beloved colleague and auxiliary worker, Andiswa Wonxie, passed away on 21 July 2015 after a short sickbed in our Ward. We are grateful for her special services to our patients as a Social Auxiliary worker here at Hospice since 2007, which she always did with great wisdom, caring and love. We will dearly miss her beautiful and radiant smile. Mr. Aaron Cupido (98), former Hospice Board Member and a Stellenbosch icon, passed away on Saturday 8 August in Ida s Valley after a long illness. He was a wellknown figure in Stellenbosch and someone who always dressed sharply, with a jacket, bow-tie, checkered Scottish beret and cane in hand. He did a lot of research, has written books, and was also very actively involved in community work. Mayor Conrad Sidego described Mr. Cupido as die geheue van Stellenbosch. 1. Chairman s Message 2. 3 CHAIRMAN S MESSAGE CHAIRMAN S MESSAGE TO THE STELLENBOSCH HOSPICE COMMUNITY VOORSITTER SE BOODSKAP AAN DIE STELLENBOSCH HOSPICE GEMEENSKAP The year has flown since I, as face to ensure strong and Chairman of the Hospice Board of Directors, prepared my last message to the Stellenbosch Hospice Community and this has been a year which has seen many changes at the Hospice. Ms Nicol has retired from the Hospice to join the Rotary movement as the Governor of Southern Africa a voluntary position. Ons rig n spesiale woord van dank aan haar vir die bydrae wat sy tot die Hospice en die diens aan die gemeenskap van Stellenbosch gemaak het. We welcomed as our new CEO Ms Marié Wilken who has quickly risen to the challenges faced by the Hospice in both sustainability and service delivery in terms of the needs of our community. As I have said on previous occasions, the challenges we strategic governance as well as financial sustainability to enable the provision of the best quality palliative care for our many patients and their families, can only be achieved with the commitment and support of all the role players and stakeholders. I wish to express my heartfelt Thank you to the Board members - Olga Basson, Johnnie Loubser [Treasurer], Renette Hanekom, Sr. Constance Witbooi, Anna de Wet, Wilfred Petersen and Sandile Ngobeni for their commitment to the Stellenbosch community and their support. Mr Ngobeni has resigned after his move to Gauteng and we welcome Ms Mathlodi Matsei who joined the Board earlier this year. The members of the Board contribute their time, vision and expertise to ensure that the Hospice address the strategic challenges positively, creatively and ethically and ensure strong governance. Elkeen van die raadslede se bydrae is belangrik en verseker dat daar aan die tientalle uitdagings deurdagtig aandag gegee en oplossings gevind word. I wish to commend the staff members for their commitment to the vision and mission of the Hospice. They are the practitioners who ensure that, through their contribution and compassion, the strategic vision of the Board and the Department of Health, is realized in providing the community with the best possible palliative care. I salute each and every one of you and thank you for your dedication. administratiewe- en Dank ook aan die winkelpersoneel wat die ondersteuningdienste lewer en help om finansiële volhoubaarheid te verseker. Ek sal faal indien ek nie ook ons dank aan al die diensorganisasies wat deel van die diensnetwerk vorm oordra nie, asook aan Stellenbosch Hospitaal vir die samewerking om dienste aan die gemeenskap te lewer.

A very special tribute must be paid to each and every one of our donors as your contribution ensures that we are able to continue the delivering of services to the people of the Stellenbosch region and meet the goals and objectives we set I also wish to express the Board s appreciation to our many friends, volunteers and supporters who have in so many ways over the years, provided guidance, support, finance and commitment to Stellenbosch Hospice. Your support makes the work we do worthwhile. Last but not least a quote from the pen of Flora Edwards: In helping others, we shall help ourselves, for whatever good we give out completes the circle and comes back to us.. We pledge to continue to provide our wide range of services to you all, at the highest level of quality palliative care, because we care. Eugénie Smith Chairman: Board of Directors Staff members singing at Ms. Geraldine Nicol s Farewell Changes in Staff A few changes in staff members happened, as Ms. Mariette Nel stepped into the position of Home Base Care Administrator, Ms. Melissa Bennett stepped into the Hospice Secretary position and Ms. Bonita Klaasen was appointed in Ms. Bennett s place as the Intermediate Care Facility s Secretary. Sister Hilda-Rose Swarts was newly appointed in the ward and Ms. Jacky Hendriks was appointed as housekeeper. Sister Kitty Jordaan, our much loved and respected Patient Care Manager resigned in June, for a position at the Stellenbosch Hospital and we have yet to appoint a new Patient Care Manager. We still enjoy the benefit of Sister Kitty s advice and help when we need it, as her office is close to Hospice.

2015 OVERVIEW - Hospice CEO Ms. Marié Wilken With the taking over from Ms. Nicol in February 2015, I experienced constant amazement at the Hospice environment and especially my new staff and volunteers. The quality of the staff team of 104 is on a level that I have rarely experienced in my life. To add on to this already wonderful environment, are the growing number of volunteers from all over Stellenbosch, who radiate the same attitude and peacefulness in their interaction with us and our patients. Although most of the volunteers are adults, an increasing number of pupils from different schools in Stellenbosch and students from the University of Stellenbosch are getting involved by doing projects or community work. I admire these young people for having the maturity to get involved in our environment, and seeing the characteristics in them make me proud of Stellenbosch s youth. My whole staff and volunteer corps consist of people who are highly professional, very caring, emotionally mature and have people and interpersonal relationship skills of a very high standard. What privilege am I experiencing? It might be explained in the following quote from the book: SHINE using brain science to get the best from your people (Edward M. Hallowell, MD), p9. From a biological standpoint, people deprived of the human moment in their day-to-day business dealings, are losing brain cells- literally while those who cultivate the human moment are growing them. Simply put, connecting genuinely with other people makes you smarter, healthier, and more productive Hospice management over the years allowed the staff and volunteers to cultivate the human moments and I was stepping into an environment where I could just continue to cultivate the human moments and did not need to start the process. I want to thank Ms. Geraldine Nicol for the legacy she left and the smooth take-over she gave me. The short time I experienced her excellent leadership capabilities, made me humble in the knowledge of the shoes I stepped in. Thank you to all the donors, volunteers, visitors and family members of our patients, who continue to shower us with blessings. As an NGO, we start every year with a budget that must still be obtained, and we are grateful to everyone who helps to ensure, that we manage to get the funds, as planned in the budget. It is with great sadness that we had to say a final farewell to Ms. Andiswa Wonxie, our Social Auxiliary Worker who passed away in July. Andiswa s place in our and the bigger Stellenbosch Community s hearts cannot be replaced, but we are very thankful to have known her, learned from her and to have had her on our staff. Her grade 10 daughter, Vuvu has already brought her school friends to do a school project on Hospice, which shows the example her mother gave her. We are excited about our new line of service, which will entail total end of life (palliative) care for patients of the whole of Stellenbosch at their homes, if so preferred. As we obtain funds, we will appoint extra staff for that project, in order not to overlap with the stipulations of the Department of Health s contract. I would like to invite the rest of Stellenbosch community to meet and join our Hospice family in ways that suits you, in order not to lose out on the very special bond that exists in Stellenbosch Hospice.

ICF (Intermediate Care Facility) The recent changes in Stellenbosch Hospice staff over the last 3 months have made for more exciting, challenging times which have left us stronger, healthier and even more determined to give the best possible service to our patients in our 12 bed unit. The 5 Star COHSASA standard 24 hour service we offer without charge, is in high demand and we currently also get referrals for care, directly from Paarl Hospital, Tygerberg Hospital and Mediclinic. Patients are kept in the ward for between 2 and 8 weeks, depending on their condition. We have an average of 96% bed occupancy and keep our patients as comfortable and pain free as possible, taking into account their personal preferences. Bloemhof pupils spoilt the patients and staff in the Ward The care worker component has stayed mostly the same. We are very blessed to have such hard working, loyal and dedicated care workers in the Butterfly Ward. Dr. Rossouw is trying his best to retire, but is still so much in demand, that he remains our mainstay doctor, and the doctors of Stellenbosch Hospital are kind enough to help us when Dr. Rossouw is not available. Pastor Nicholas Ricketts continues his pastoral counselling services which are very popular with both staff and patients alike. Our relationship with Stellenbosch Hospital Pharmacy, kitchen, casualty department CSSD, and Wards A, B, and C remains very good with clear communication and co-operation from all. Below: Marié Wilken and Avril Retief with Margie Chapman (SA Care Forum) and Franciscah Tsikai from Zimbabwe who visited our Ward

Both the Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Departments of the University of Stellenbosch continue to bring their students to ICF to gain valuable experience helping our patients. We have improved our liaison with the Community Based Physiotherapy Department to ensure the continuity of care for our patients who need ongoing help at home after discharge from ICF. We are building new relationships with other staff of the Department of Health by attending joint Quality Assurance, Infection Prevention and Control and Occupational Health Meetings held at the Action Hall of Stellenbosch Hospital. Our volunteers remain a big part of our services offered with students and prayer groups visiting ICF on a regular basis. Flowers in ward and passages are kindly done by Stellenbosch Flower Association under leadership of Susan Joubert. 8 HOSPICE IN THE HOME AND COMMUNITY Stellenbosch Hospice aims to render compassionate care for those from the Stellenbosch surrounding communities; who are challenged by life threatening diseases. In the Home-Based Care program we have in our employment 64 Carers, 4 supervisors and 3 coordinators. One of the carers specializes to assist a school nurse and will work with the team from DOH that visits the schools. 2 Carers (one in Klapmuts and one in Kayamandi) will be allocated to the DOH Dietician and will assist her at the 2 clinics and in the community. 4 Carers were trained to do a WOW (Western Cape on Wellness) program in their areas; the idea is that they start wellness clubs. Right: At the launch of the WOW program by Minister of Health To uphold our contractual obligations towards DOH, our main focus is prevention and promotion of chronic diseases e.g. Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus, childhood diseases, HIV and AIDS, TB, as well as promotion of men s and women s health. Our Palliative Care is done by 2 Palliative trained Professional Nurses, who assist and care for these patients and their families holistically, from the day of referral to us until their passing. We had our Mandela Day in the respective communities which ranged from a fun activity day for children in Lanquedoc to a soup kitchen in Cloetesville. A 12 week Parental Training course, sponsored by the Municipality of Stellenbosch s Grant in Aid fund, has started in July for our Carers to better equip themselves and to pay it forward to their communities. We have met all our contractual targets for the Department of Health and are committed to give quality care. Left: Our Carers receiving training at their Bi-monthly HBC Forum

PSYCHO-SOCIAL SUPPORT development and be of support in the process of working through this trauma. We still have 26 Children in our OVC project. Because of the successes in 2014 with this project, we could replace 4 children who did not need the program anymore with 4 children who needed the counselling and support. One of these 4 new children, is *David. His father with whom *David lived for 9 years, passed away in December 2014 and he now experiences difficulty in adapting to the changed circumstances of staying with his mother and stepfather. With him in the program, we can manage his Although we only have 26 children in the program, we have 59 contacts with child patients. We proposed to bring one of our child patients, *Cynthia, to the Intermediate Care Facility during the school holidays so that she can practice walking or mobilizing herself using crutches under the guidance of the Nursing Staff. She struggles to practise at home and her mother is too scared to help her. During the last term, we managed to have 432 intervention contacts, 81 bereavement counselling sessions, 14 family meetings and 34 spiritual interventions. We decided to be more proactive in terms of the need of our children and therefore invest in 142 consultation sessions with them. Below: DelVera Farm Outing: The children received lunch and had fun outside (Success stories: *names changed to protect the children s identities) One of our success stories in this regard was one of our children, *John, who was raised by his great grandmother and felt lost and isolated after her death. His mother, who was only available for a short while after the funeral, left him in the care of his grandmother. He became withdrawn in the school and isolates himself from his friends and sporting activities. During consultation we concentrate on creative art, belonging and self-confidence in the bereavement process. His teacher mentioned that he now participates and does very well in the spelling competition. He is his old self and joins his friends again on the school grounds. The 27 children in the OVC (Orphan and Vulnerable Children) program was part of an activity day that we arranged in partnership with the local municipality in July this year. The Eco centre in the Jan Marais park has a very enjoyable educational program that includes a spot the subject at the nature reserve. Two parents joined us on that day and expressed sincere gratitude for being part of the day, as it was their first visit to the park.

Weekly Day Care: It s a pleasure to report that the Day Care patients have been growing spiritually and emotionally. They value the support of the staff and co-patients. They are all at ease and give their cooperation. Hester-Marie, the spiritual support student, did some pottery with them as part of our activities, where they each made a spoon. Students The Social Work students from the University of Stellenbosch s sessions will end in November. They are very helpful specifically in terms of public awareness of our services through their group work and community work programs. We are grateful to the University of Stellenbosch for placing students with Hospice every year. Many of our partners, specifically the SA Police and SASSA, are so willing to give a service to our patients in the Ward. 13 The Hospice Shop The Hospice Shop currently has 5 staff members and 16 volunteers who man the three different shops. In the beginning of 2015 we had a problem with at least 2 cars parked in Borcherd Street that had been broken into. We now employ a security guard daily who guards the clients vehicles; assists our clients who want to drop off donations, as well as guards the shops against shoplifting. to advertise our products for free on their website Left: Pakamisa with an ipad donated by OXL The Shop s turnover increased tremendously in 2015 and for the first time it reached R per month net. We want to thank the Stellenbosch Community for opening their hearts and purses to the shops. The plan to do improvements is underway and the work, with help of volunteers and donors, will commence in June We are very thankful for the paint that was donated by Oranjeblanjeblou in Andringa Street, with which we immediately spruced up a room where the volunteers mark the clothes. We can never have enough volunteers offering their services, which is a very welcome asset in the marking of books; clothes and other items, and creates a warm atmosphere of belonging to the community of Stellenbosch. The Shop currently contributes +20% of the Hospice s budget, which is used to continue our Home-Based Care services to all the areas in the Stellenbosch Municipal district.
