2 A new curriculum will commence in September 2013 for the BSc (Hons) Pre-Registration Midwifery Eligibility to apply for Registration as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council

3 Course Structure Highly integrated and focused programme Course completed over 156 weeks in 3 years with 7 weeks annual leave per year 45 programmed weeks each year The course will be delivered using both clinical and theoretical elements with a 55/45 weighting respectively Some shared learning will take place in multiprofessional groups or with post-registration midwives at appropriate points in the programme

5 Practice / Clinical Placements Placements take place throughout the South West, therefore you will be required to travel to and from placements Practice takes place under the direct or indirect supervision of a sign off mentor Some placements will be in non-midwifery areas DoH bursaries, include travel and accommodation for placements

6 Programme Pattern The pattern of the programme will reflect a block structure, with students either in practice or theory/ annual leave. It is anticipated that the first full practice block will commence after Christmas, with some introductory days prior to this.

7 You may be required to travel for your practice placements, developing a broader practice experience All theory will be delivered in Plymouth or via blended learning

8 Your Application assessed in its totality Academic qualifications including: - Strong GCSE profile: five grades A-C (must include English, Maths and Science) - A Levels: 320 points - at least 160 points from two A levels; at least a B in a science subject at A-level (Biology, Physics or Chemistry preferred; Psychology and Sociology considered for 2013 application) Personal Statement References

9 Your Application continued Non Standard Academic Qualifications BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in a Science or Health related subject Access to Higher Education: 60 credits overall with 45 at level 3; 30 must be at distinction level including 15 in a Science/s; a further 15 points must be at merit level; a pass at level 2 in Maths and English Evidence of academic study in the last five years is required

10 UCAS Application continued Entry to the Midwifery course is very competitive Candidates are offered places on the basis of the totality of their UCAS application and a selection day All applications go through a short listing process Selection days will comprise a numeracy test, literacy test and, if successful, be followed by an interview References will be reviewed

13 Selection Day Full day process Discussions about Midwifery as a profession and course requirements Morning selection process involving numeracy and written elements One to one interview in the afternoon if successful in the morning elements

14 Recommended Study Skills Entry is competitive Students are advised to be positive about study skills as it will enable you to study more effectively. Addressing the following skills is particularly good preparation: Numeracy: Including fractions & decimals Literacy: Including scan reading, academic writing, spelling and grammar IT skills: Word processing, and the use of the internet including information retrieval
