1 Directorate of Women & Children s Health Services JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Staff Nurse - NICU GRADE: Band 5 DIRECTORATE: RESPONSIBLE TO: ACCOUNTABLE TO: Women & Children s Health Ward Manager Assistant Lead Nurse JOB SUMMARY The post holder, as a skilled member of the nursing team and in the multi-disciplinary health care team, will promote and provide a high standard of holistic, family centred and evidence-based neonatal care and their families. Will communicate effectively at all levels within the health care team, will assist in training and supervision of preregistration students and will be accountable for her own professional actions. The post holder will also be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Nursing To work as a member of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team in the provision of the highest standard of family centred and evidence based nursing care to neonates and their families across both sites. To plan, assess, implement and evaluate programmes for individual neonate and to assist other staff in this activity. To maintain an ongoing welcoming, caring and safe environment for the neonates and their families. To act as an advocate for the child and family ensuring provision of appropriate information and support services.
2 To develop and maintain clinical skills, knowledge and attitude necessary to provide holistic, evidence-based nursing care to the neonates, which includes expanded roles and responsibilities following appropriate training. To provide health information and education to the neonates families as necessary and to provide or direct them to the relevant support services where appropriate. To take an active role in maintaining effective communication with all members of the multi-disciplinary team as well as ensuring that the families are wellinformed and updated about the neonates health conditions and progress, to include liasing with the medical team about the medical plan and response to treatment. To facilitate discharge planning, liase with the multi-disciplinary team, other departments and community services as necessary. To assist in the performance of specialised therapies or procedures (i.e. intubation and ventilation, umbilical and artery cannulation, chest tube insertion and drainage etc). To implement agreed medical plan of action and therapeutic orders for the neonate. To assist with ongoing education and training of families in caring for the neonate. To evaluate the neonates in response to interventions and revise plans to cope with changing conditions of the neonate. Safely set up and maintain all IV pumps, ventilators, incubators and other necessary equipment needed to admit a compromised neonate. To have an understanding of all drugs used in the unit environment and to undertake relevant drug administration training. Be competent in the administration of medication following ABM University Hospital Trust policy. Ensure that adequate precautions are taken to minimise the risk of cross-infection in relation to the safe disposal of body fluids including blood products. To help ensure clinical practice is evidence-based or peer reviewed best practice. To retrieve babies from labour ward. Managerial To support members of the ward team to ensure that all patients receive appropriate care.
3 To co-ordinate with the multi-disciplinary team and ensure that treatments prescribed by the medical staff are carried out, and that the team members are informed of changes in the patient s condition. To ensure quality care is given, by being familiar with agreed ward and Trust standards of care and to inform senior nursing staff if the required standard could not be reached. To assist in ensuring allocated resources are managed effectively and efficiently. This includes effective utilisation of time and equipment. To assist in ensuring the safety of the ward, actively participating in clinical audit, clinical risk and quality issues including the managing and reporting of incidents. To assist Ward Manager/Charge Nurse in the supervision of non-nursing staff. Participate in the Audit of Nursing Practice. Professional To demonstrate a professional approach to work and act in accordance with the ABM University Hospital Trust personal responsibilities framework and the NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times. Act as a professional in ensuring a duty of care to the neonates, their families and other staff. This also includes in relation to the patient safety and storage of their belongings, equipment and safety of their colleagues. To maintain confidentiality surrounding the child s admission and treatment at all times. Identify any concerns relating to child protection (Children s Act 1989) reporting to the Senior Nurse, Child Health and liasing with other agencies as appropriate. To ensure that all clinical and legal documents are both accurate and legible in line with NMC and Trust guidelines. To meet PREP requirements. To identify own learning needs to ensure own professional development is maintained by keeping up to date with practice developments in conjunction with the team leader. To take personal responsibility for own professional growth and keep up to date with professional development and research. To participate in the orientation development and training needs of the students, newly qualified staff on the ward and/or act as a mentor for freshman students. Support the ward manager and participate in unit/ward meetings.
4 To participate in staff appraisal, staff development and in service training activities. To be registered with the NMC and be aware of NMC Code of Professional Conduct and be accountable for own practice. Be aware of the NMC Scope of Professional practice and ensure competency to undertake duties as allocated. Updated professional Portfolio is maintained as per NMC guidance. Educational To actively assist in the education and practical training of learners and junior staff at every opportunity. To work in co-operation with Swansea University in order to provide uniformity and promotion of professional standards. To participate in informal and formal teachings. To be a mentor/preceptor for students and to supervise and orientate learners and new staff, when requested. To be involved in any research/audit activity by collecting data as required. Responsible for professional development and keeping up to date with all professional nursing issues. Working Conditions Physical effort frequent requirement for standing in a restricted are for varying periods of time; requirement to manoeuvre heavy/bulky equipment in restricted spaces. Mental effort frequent requirement for intense concentration. Working environment unavoidable exposure to body fluids, oxygen, nitric oxide, drugs, x-ray; constant exposure to uncomfortable levels of heat and lack of fresh air.
