21 Lean Terminology Six Sigma Approach: Problem focused with a view that process variation is waste and that utilizes statistics to understand variation Lean Approach: Focused on process flow and views any activity that does not add value as waste and utilizes uses visuals to understand the process flow. Kaizan: Continuous, incremental improvement of an activity to create more value with less waste Non-Value Added Activities : Activities or actions taken that add no real value to the product or service making such activities or action a form of waste Value Stream: The specific activities required to design, order and provide a specific product, from concept to launch, order to delivery, and raw materials into the hands of the customer
