Such patients require very specific nursing care. The specialized needs of a pregnant trauma patient and the fetus will be outlined. A case study will be used to illustrate the content. 12:15 pm 1:15 pm ~ Lunch 1:15 pm 2:30 pm 331 Trauma Across the Ages Dawn M. Specht, PhD, MSN, RN, APN, CEN This educational session will review key points in the management of trauma patients, focusing upon developmental differences in assessment and management across the lifespan. Participants will then apply this knowledge to two trauma cases. 332 Mapping the Identities of LGBT Patients T. Jibri Douglas, BSHP We often box individuals, especially LGBT people, into a single story or single identity. We will look at how single stories are dangerous to disease prevention, treatment, and health management of LGBT patients. In addition, we will gain a clear understanding of intersectionality and how understanding a person s intersections can improve and strengthen the patient-provider relationship as it relates to nursing and healthcare management.

17 1:15 pm 2:30 pm 333 Alphabet Soup of Stroke Assessment in the Care of the Acute Stroke Patient Ray Bennett, BSN, RN, SCRN, CEN, CFRN, CTRN, NREMT-P This session is to enable the learner to improve their ability to effectively use various stroke assessment scales and techniques to perform a detailed assessment of the Acute Stroke patient. 334 Pain and Sedation Assessment in the Emergency Department Jessica Trivett, MSN, RN,CEN, PCCN How do you measure your patient s pain when they can t give it a number from 0-10? What scale do you use to assess when you are sedating a patient? We will review alternate pain scales and sedation scales to help you assess your patients. 335 How to Outsmart Your Negative Brain Daniel Doherty, MSN, RN, CEN Do you ever find it challenging to separate your work and personal life? Helping professionals often feel personally invested in their caring roles after all, we are caring individuals. There are great rewards for your investment, but there can also be a great personal cost attached to helping others. It can become difficult to separate work from home, and this sometimes affects our personal relationships. By understanding our brains when they are stressed, we learn how to outsmart the negative intrusive thoughts that keep us in a fatigued state of mind. 336 Nurse, Heal Thyself! Deb Delaney, MHA, BSN, CEN An integral part of nursing includes educating our patients, and we are often considered the experts when teaching about obesity, stress management and healthy behaviors. Just like the patients we are caring for, nurses often find it difficult to eat healthy, or find the time and motivation to exercise, quit smoking or debrief effectively. Since nurses attitudes can influence whether their patients commit to a healthy lifestyle, how can we modify our own unhealthy behaviors to be more able to practice what we preach? This session will provide some simple tools to help improve your own state of wellness, so that you can improve your patients. 2:30 pm 2:45 pm ~ Break 2:45 pm 3:15 pm ~ Fast Track Sessions 341 Blunt Abdominal Trauma in the Pediatric Population Dawn Tortajada, RN, MSN, PNP-BC This will be a review of the assessment of the pediatric patient with known or suspected traumatic injuries. Head to toe assessment, challenges in assessment of the child, as well as pediatric-specific consideration will be presented. 342 Anxiety Elizabeth Mizerek, MSN, RN, CEN, CPEN, FN-CSA Stop the panic about anxiety disorders! Stressed about dealing with anxious patients? Come review the common clinical presentations and management of acute and chronic anxiety in the emergency setting.

18 2:45 pm 3:15 pm ~ Fast Track Sessions 343 CODE YELLOW: Your Patient Has Fallen and They Can t Get Up Heather Heil Linsalata, MSN, RN, CNL, CEN, TCRN Kimberly Russo, BSN, RN, FN-CSA With the hectic environment of the ED, patients are at an even greater risk for falling. Although many in-patient screening tools and preventive measures exist, none are specific to falls in the ED. Current research on fall prevention in the ED will be discussed, as well as possible interventions to make your ED falls free. 344 It s a Small World After All! Brenda Braun, MSN, RN, CEN, CPEN Neonates, by virtue of being ill can be more susceptible to illness and injury. Emergency providers are often insecure in the care needed due to the infrequency of calls for these littlest patients. This lecture will review neonatal resuscitation post precipitous birth as well as assessment findings that impact care. 345 What to Expect When You are Not Expecting a Trauma Patient Patricia Nierstedt, MS, RN, CEN, TCRN What happens when the trauma patient follows the big white H and shows up in your ED? This lecture discusses 3 trauma cases that did just that, and the lessons learned from them. 346 Up Your Nose: Using Intranasal Narcan to Reverse Overdose Lori Kelty, MSN/Ed., RN, CCRN, CEN, NE Utilizing intranasal Narcan to reverse opioid overdose has become epidemic. We will discuss historical data, current trends, and future considerations associated with the medical and moral issues surrounding this practice. Are we doing enough for this population, or have we gone too far? 3:15 pm 3:30 pm ~ Break 3:30 pm 4:45 pm 351 No Time To Care: Improving Patient Engagement and Satisfaction in 60 Seconds or Less Charles Kunkle, MSN,RN,CEN,ACNS-BC On a daily basis, hospitals are challenged to meet the needs of their patients and to comply with the overwhelming regulatory and accreditation standards. Caregivers are struggling to meet the expectations of their patients and of their employers. Learn the secret to true patient engagement and how to provide compassionate care in 60 seconds or less.
