1 RUSHER LOSCAVIO FISHER NONPROFIT EXECUTIVE SEARCH CAREER PROSPECTUS POSITION: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ORGANIZATION: San Francisco and Northern San Mateo Counties ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND: is San Francisco s Volunteers in Medicine free clinic, one of 93 in the United States and the first in Northern California. is a volunteerpowered free health clinic for low income uninsured adults residing in San Francisco and San Mateo counties. The practices and values of the national network of Volunteers in Medicine clinics is epitomized in San Francisco s own Clinic, engaging retired and practicing doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, supported by non-medical volunteers all dedicated to the provision to those in need of compassionate, high quality health care, free of charge. The Clinic affirms: Our mission is to understand and serve, with dignity and respect, the health and wellness needs of the medically underserved in the San Francisco Bay Area. Additionally, we provide meaningful opportunities for volunteerism and civic engagement to provide a caring medical home to our working uninsured neighbors. The Culture of Caring is the heart and soul of our clinic. 2 Page 2 in all of our interactions. We care for the whole person, not only their illness. Founded in 2009 by Janet Reilly, Scott Hauge, and community leaders whom they recruited, the Clinic has quickly evolved into a respected resource in the community served. Led by a Board of 13 directors, managed by a halfdozen dedicated staff, powered by a small army of volunteers, and located in the heart of San Francisco s Excelsior neighborhood, on lower Mission Street, the Clinic is a labor of love devoted to 2,000 patient visits annually. The Clinic is easily accessible to the patients it serves, most of whom reside in the Excelsior, Visitacion Valley, Mission, and northern San Mateo County communities. Considering the location of the Clinic and the low income patients to whom services are targeted, it is not at all surprising that in this diverse population high percentages of patients are immigrants, documented and undocumented, from Mexico, Central America, the South Pacific, and Asia. Nearly 50% are Hispanic; other significant contingents speak Tagalog, Viet Namese, and Cantonese or Mandarin; many are monolingual, whose limited English presents an added dimension of challenge to the Clinic s staff and volunteers. The Clinic has never relied on government funding and does not serve patients with insurance, so its support is 100% from individual and business contributions, grants from private and public foundations, plus the considerable contributions of services and goods from physicians, other healthcare providers, medical imaging and supply companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers and retailers, etc. The recent and current budgets have been about $800,000 in cash contributions plus approximately $800,000 in in-kind volunteered services, donated pharmaceuticals, medical testing/imaging, and supplies. The Medical Director is an experienced hospital administrator and specialist in emergency medicine, whose half-time position includes oversight of all medical operations. His volunteer doctors include a diverse array of

3 Page 3 primary care and specialist physicians, some retired, others fully engaged in active practice elsewhere, who find this free service to low income patients a gratifying way to contribute to their community. Other healthcare professionals are similarly motivated to volunteer, providing the overall healthcare expertise essential to the Clinic s viability. Together with a dedicated corps of non-healthcare volunteers, more than 130 volunteers supplement the small staff in making the Clinic an invaluable resource to the underserved patients in the area. Added to this considerable pool of expertise and general manpower support are donated goods and services from drug manufacturers, medical testing laboratories, x-ray and other medical imaging centers, etc., making it possible to leverage donated cash contributions into an array of services two or three times as great as actual revenues. The Medical Advisory Committee works closely with the on any matters of healthcare policy or quality control. The opportunities for leadership by the next Executive Director are considerable. The successful will: Enjoy the mission-driven dedication of Board, staff, and volunteers, understanding the central role of the chief executive officer in maintaining and building on the strength, size, and effectiveness of each of those critical bodies of support to the Clinic; Increase the visibility of the Clinic in the community, building relationships with other healthcare providers, referral sources, and others connected with the uninsured low income community to ensure a steady and growing flow of patients served; Fuel the Clinic s fundraising efforts, reaching out to new individual, business/corporate, foundation donors to increase the contributed income available to the Clinic, capably marshalling the resources of the Board and other existing and prospective friends of the Clinic to build every donor constituency,

4 Page 4 increasing financial and in-kind services; Bring both multi-tasking skills and a no-job-too-small attitude and a mature and sophisticated understanding of administration and priority-setting to a small organization in need of infrastructure systematization, staff and volunteer coordination/training, database development, and information management, appreciating at all times both the limitations of an organization whose operating model has been a lean staff straining to provide adequate mission-centered support to a large cohort of professional and lay volunteers. The next of must be passionate about the importance of medical care to low income families, a seasoned and entrepreneurial manager of financial and human resources, a consummate fundraiser and charismatic spokesperson, advocate, and effective organizer in the community. RESPONSIBILITIES: The is responsible for the management and operation of all programs and services provided by, for implementing all policy decisions of the governing Board, and for employing and supervising a staff whose dedication and high morale creates a healthy working environment and produces quality of service more than adequate to achieve Board objectives. S/he oversees the administrative and fiduciary functions of the agency. S/he represents the agency to the community, and builds strong relationships with key stakeholders Board, staff, volunteers, donors, community supporters. S/he partners with the Board in fundraising to support Clinic programs.

5 Page 5 Specifically, the : Helps determine and ensure, in partnership with the governing Board, that the mission, vision, and values of are carried out. Anticipates changing community needs with vision and imagination, through ongoing study and networking develops a sophisticated understanding and intuitive sense of likely future trends in medical insurance, health and financial needs of low income patients, and the provision of primary care and referral services the ecosystem of healthcare provision. Tracks the changing demographics of San Francisco and implications for Clinic services. Facilitates long-range strategic and operational planning, and, concurrent with Board policy, is responsible and accountable for implementation of all such plans. Demonstrates a high level of business acumen. Works with the staff to recommend budgets to the Board, oversees revenues and expenditures, maintains internal controls and financial discipline, and works closely with the Board to ensure the financial wellbeing of the organization. Understands knowledge management, program evaluation, and is comfortable with information technology and its broad applications, while at the same time being sensitive to the tradeoffs inherent in limited staff and volunteers focused on direct patient services over record-keeping. Is acutely aware of the vulnerability of low income patients, in many cases limited English speaking, is astute in anticipating level of care and safety issues, diligent in monitoring the attentiveness and judgment of staff, attuned to potential risk, and able to avert endangering or embarrassing lapses in service that could place persons served, Clinic by the Bay, or its reputation at risk. Works closely with Board members, community friends of, and staff to identify, cultivate, and solicit charitable gifts in support of the programs of

6 Page 6. Increases charitable giving to fund both operations and growth to meet the Clinic s needs, present and future. Works closely with all external individuals and organizations with shared interests in healthcare services to low income adults, promoting alliances wherever collaboration can enhance such services. Earns respect throughout the community as a representative of the Clinic and because of a style of collaboration that places the interests of people served above all else. Oversees and approves contracts, maintains organization-wide practices that set a high standard with respect to all regulations, and complies with all external reporting requirements. Takes executive responsibility for agency compliance with all applicable non-profit laws, labor/workplace laws, contractual obligations, and donor restrictions, and maintains appropriate internal policies and procedures to ensure such compliance. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate for will have: Passion for service to low income adults with medical needs and genuine affection for them and their families. Embodiment of values, style, and energy that sustain the generosity of spirit that is the hallmark of. Extensive non-profit experience at the executive level, or executive experience with an extensive history of public service as a non-profit board member and/or public official in the field of human services. An understanding of health care and the healthcare industry is strongly preferred, but many exceptional candidates are expected to demonstrate proven leadership with a broad array of skills transferable to a complex non-profit human services organization, and the ability quickly to master a new field of service.

Profit and loss experience evidencing financial acumen and the ability to lead creatively in times of both surplus and financial exigency; a strategic perspective, with a history of successful planning, anticipation, and implementation of plans; entrepreneurial ability appropriate to a rapidly changing and turbulent funding and service environment. Multi-tasking skills essential in an understaffed, volunteer-dependent organization; the ability to delegate and avoid micromanagement unless necessary, balanced by a can-do and no-job-too-small attitude; great attention to detail and unfailing attention to the big picture. Evidence of anticipation of risk, sound judgment in crisis, grace under pressure. Highly developed communication skills, and especially the ability to listen and learn. Both in writing and in oral presentations, literate, analytical, well-organized, persuasive. Flexibility to be accessible and present to all constituencies staff, volunteers, patients and their families, Board, donors, external colleagues, the community. Ability to motivate, mentor, and inspire an effective

8 Page 8 professional and volunteer workforce, to work closely, in partnership, and in a position of leadership with a diverse staff, in a style of respect and collaboration. The confidence to lead; the confidence to follow. The sensitivity to recruit, mentor, reward, and advance talented staff; the sound judgment, patience, and confidence to hold staff accountable for their performance and to make difficult personnel changes when appropriate. An exemplary work ethic, authenticity, robust high energy, persistence and durability, impeccable integrity, a good sense of humor, and a wise and caring understanding of the human condition. EDUCATION: Lifelong learning and educational achievement appropriate to the complexity of the position. Advanced degrees in health-related fields are highly desirable, as are degrees in behavioral health and management. Conversational Spanish extremely useful. Residence in the community served a plus. COMPENSATION: Compensation will be competitive, probably in the range of $100,000 - $120,000, negotiable based on experience and salary history, and will grow as the Clinic grows. Robert M.
