2 2009/10 Annual Benchmarking Comparison of Canadian Hospitals 2009/2010 Annual Benchmarking Comparison of Canadian Hospitals For the fourteenth year, Hay Group is pleased to offer the Benchmarking Comparison of Canadian Hospitals. The Hay Group Benchmarking Comparison is the oldest, largest, and most widely accepted performance benchmarking database for hospitals in Canada. The Hay Group Benchmarking Study provides comparisons of the quality, clinical efficiency and operational efficiency performance of Canadian hospitals. The benchmarking study is designed to help participating organizations identify opportunities to improve. This is a private performance benchmarking database available only to participants and is designed specifically to address the interests and meet the needs of the participating hospitals and health/hospital systems. It is a performance and quality improvement tool; not a report card. The comparisons include separate analyses of the performance of teaching hospitals, major community general hospitals (identified as Community 1) and community general hospitals (identified as Community 2). Last year's participating organizations provided 2.25 million episodes of inpatient and day procedure care representing almost 50% of all acute care hospital separations in Canada. The participants spent over $21 billion on hospital operations representing almost 50% of all spending on hospital operations in Canada. Hay Group provides each participating organization: Quality and patient safety, clinical efficiency and operational efficiency data and performance measures for all participating hospitals Access to the Hay Group Performance Benchmarking web site Printed and electronic copies of the Benchmarking Summary Report To participate you will be required to: Authorize the use of your 2009/10 hospital separation data set Provide your 2009/10 financial/statistical data Identify contact persons to interpret/confirm your data Permit identification of your hospital in benchmarking reports Pay the appropriate participation fee If you are interested in participating in this year's benchmarking study please complete the Participation Form included with this brochure. An invoice will be issued when your participation form is received. The fee is $10,000 per organization plus $1,000 for each additional site (or grouping of sites). 3 The focus of the benchmarking study is helping participating organizations identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, clinical efficiency, and quality of care. Clinical Efficiency Provides the most meaningful and most useful measurements and comparisons of clinical efficiency in Canada: Clinical efficiency is measured in relation to % of cases treated as day procedures and average length of stay Benchmark performance is based on best practice and different percentile levels of hospital clinical efficiency among the participating hospitals Benchmarks are provided at different levels of specificity for different groupings of patients: the hospital as a whole, MCCs, Levels of Care (as measured using the Hay Group Level of Care Methodology), Case Mix Groups (CMGs) and CMG/Age Group/ Resource Intensity Level (RIL) combinations Volume screens are employed to ensure that only hospitals with a meaningful patient volume in each CMG/Age Group/RIL combination are considered as potential clinical efficiency benchmark hospitals Inpatient volume and length of stay statistics are adjusted for each hospital to reflect best practice day procedure percentages. In this way, comparisons of length of stay are based only on cases that are appropriately cared for as inpatients Utilization of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services Provides measurements and comparisons of the utilization of diagnostic and therapeutic services: Benchmark performance is based on different percentile levels of utilization among the participating hospitals Measures of inpatient procedures and hours per acute weighted case and/or per acute patient day Identifies the benchmark hospital and the performance of each participating hospital on each utilization measure Operational Efficiency Provides data and documentation to better understand measurements and opportunities for improvement in operational efficiency: Benchmark performance is based on best practice and different percentile levels of operating efficiency performance among the participating hospitals Benchmark performance levels for each hospital functional centre Benchmark hospital and performance of all participating hospitals on each efficiency measure are identified Quality and Patient Safety Provides evidence regarding quality patient care to support hospital decision-making: Relative performance of each hospital on key quality measures Both traditional and innovative measures of quality and patient safety
