3 Respiratory Physiotherapy Team The Clinical Director of Physiotherapy for Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust is Catherine Carr. Karen Manners, Superintendent Physiotherapist, has managerial responsibility for the In-patients Physiotherapy Team at Wansbeck General Hospital. Clinical Director of Physiotherapy Superintendent II Physiotherapist (IPs) Senior I Senior I Senior II Rotational Post Staff:- Senior I Brian Collins Senior I Carole McAlpine Full time Senior II Dawn Kirkwood Junior Rotational Post Contact Address: Wansbeck General Hospital Woodhorn Rd Ashington Northumberland NE63 9JJ Service Provision The service provides physiotherapy assessment, treatment and advice to all respiratory patients in Wansbeck General Hospital, including ITU HDU CCU Surgical wards ( 4 & 5) Respiratory ward (2) Medical Admissions Unit (MAU) Outlying patients on medical wards Respiratory outpatients
4 Referral Pathways Physiotherapists collect their own referrals from all wards covered. Doctors, Nurse Specialists, Care Facilitators and Ward Staff also make verbal referrals to physiotherapists. Consultants and Respiratory Nurse Specialists make outpatient referrals from clinics. Preparation for Respiratory Placement Students are expected to carry-out the following work prior to commencing the placement: Background reading on common respiratory and surgical problems Update on respiratory anatomy and physiology Physiotherapy management of common respiratory conditions Individual SWOT analysis Aims and Objectives Aims of Placement 1. To gain knowledge and experience in the physiotherapy assessment, treatment and management of patients with respiratory problems 2. To gain experience of Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT) working and understand the role of each team member Objectives 1.1 To assess the patient and reach a clinical diagnosis 1.2 To use this assessment to provide an effective treatment / management plan 1.3 To formulate aims and objectives of treatment / management 1.4 To be able to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment at regular intervals 1.5 To gain experience in the use of equipment used in a variety of clinical settings for the respiratory patient 1.6 To be able to adapt level and type of communication to establish good relationships with patients 1.7 To establish a professional relationship with members of the MDT
5 Induction Plan : Respiratory Placement Learning Plan Week 1 Day 1 Orientation to the Department Housekeeping, personnel, policies, procedures, health & safety, library and learning resources, documentation Discuss learning outcomes, SWOT analysis, areas of interest / concern, preferred learning style Discuss previous experience and identify gaps in knowledge Overview of the proposed learning experience Shadowing of Senior I on wards assessment and treatment Day 2 5 Orientation of clinical setting and respiratory physiotherapist s role Observation of Clinical Educator Introduction to documentation Progression to assessment and treatment of people with respiratory conditions (discuss problems, treatment plan and goal setting) Set additional learning outcomes Timetable dates for ½ way and end of placement report Agree date for presentation i.e. case study Introduction to the MDT, nursing staff, OT, ward doctors and other Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) Week 2 Progress to responsibility for a small caseload on the wards. Progress to guided subjective and objective assessment of patients Deliver and adapt treatment programmes after discussing with Clinical Educator Observe Clinical Educator and also be observed Participate in In-service Training (IST) Independent study time. Select a subject for presentation in final week Week 3 Continuation of responsibility for a small number of patients on the wards Subjective and objective assessment under close supervision Development of goals and treatment and management Week 4 Increase responsibility for a caseload of patients on the wards Develop organisational skills ward management Development of assessment, goal setting and treatment programmes Observe and be observed performing assessments and treatment plans Discuss treatment and management options Demonstrate ability to adapt treatment to individual circumstances
6 Week 5 Consolidation of knowledge and skills gained during previous 4 weeks and review of additional learning objectives Present case study / project Final assessment and grade for placement Student assessment of placement Students will experience aspects of the Portfolio of Learning Opportunities (POLO) throughout the placement. It is hoped that some experiences may have a direct relation to the student s caseload. Progression / caseload and the degree of supervision will be adjusted according to the year group, ability of the individual student and prior clinical experience.
