DHSSPS WHIP Workplace Health Improvement Programme
DHSSPS WHIP DHSS&PS Stormont Estate City Centre and Derry 850 staff with approx 70% over 40 years of age.
DHSSPS WHIP Workplace is an ideal setting for promoting health Access to large numbers of people including groups difficult to reach by other means e.g. young men, busy mothers. Structures to allow communication of health messages and encourage participation in health promotion activities Potential to take the message home to families and communities
DHSSPS WHIP Broader issues Promote the concept of healthy workers = healthy business Create a sense of employees feeling valued and cared for Contribute to improvements in the lives of individuals, their families & overall public health in Northern Ireland
DHSSPS WHIP Benefits of DHSSPS s 10 year programme of Workplace Health Improvement Programme Overall improvement in the health and well-being of our people at work (DHSSPS performs consistently better in all health surveys than comparative Departments within the NICS, less stress, less absences and improved feeling of being valued) Helps keep more of our people at work (our absence figures are lower, and getting lower year on year than other comparative organisations within the NICS) Staff sometimes receive advanced warning of unknown health conditions (e.g. High Blood Pressure, cholesterol ) or potential life threatening conditions e.g. Breast Cancer) and are encouraged to attend their doctor (many examples of this. In a recent CH&S examination of 200 people, 34 were referred to their own GP for further investigations, Action cancer mobile unit has detected small tumours and screening programmes have detected early onset of Diabeties) Smoking within DHSSPS is lower than any NICS Department at 15% compared to 20% in NICS, and 25% in the general public
DHSSPS WHIP Workplace Health Promotion Programmes In achieving success we believe you need:- Top management support Employee Involvement (relies on good communication) Focus on modifiable risk factors Programmes tailored to the characteristics and needs of the organisation and the employees within the organisation Resources to carry out the programme
DHSSPS WHIP The DHSSPS WHIP Committee consists of:- Chairman, Personnel Director Senior Representatives from each business division across the organisation Trade Union Health and safety OHS WHIP co-ordinator and team members Total approx 12 people
DHSSPS WHIP How is our annual programme developed and delivered within DHSSPS
DHSSPS WHIP Each year in February the WHIP committee meets to review the previous years events and to develop a plan for the year ahead. Information which influences the development of next years plan is gathered from many sources e.g.:- * Chief Medical Officer s report Smoking-related disease Heart disease and cancer Mental illness Obesity * HPA / FSA initiatives ie: reduction in Fat / Salt intake etc * Suggestions from staff taken from evaluation at the end of each programme * Absence statistics taken from HR * Committee members own suggestions * NICS Workforce Health Survey
DHSSPS WHIP The WHIP Committee produces key priorities for the forthcoming year and sets budget for events. WHIP team records and collates information from discussions during meeting Over the next two months a draft action plan is developed Key dates and service providers are contacted and booked In March/ April the draft action plan is issued to committee members and final plan is sent by to all staff two weeks later Implementation of the plan is rolled out throughout year (1 st April to 31 st March)

Well done WHIP Committee. Great event hope it happens annually. Well done DHSSPS for organising such a wonderful and informative event for the benefit of its own staff. It is wonderful that at last an employer has recognised the unseen work carried out behind closed doors! I come from another Department where these sort of events NEVER happen. Should have these more often especially the therapies. I think it is good to make people aware of the needs of carers and what is available for their needs. I learnt a great deal about the help available from a range of sources. Very relevant for many people. Good practical information. Very helpful to see what is available to carers regionally. Excellent event. I found out information that will be very helpful to me in the future. Thank you for recognising the role that I play as a carer. It is hard work and it is nice to feel valued. Lots of really useful information. Great event. Thank you DHSSPS. Good show This was a very worthwhile event, I picked up more information today than all of last year with social workers and doctors. I am really pleased this event was put on. Very professional convention, lots of useful information. DHSSPS WHIP Comments from Staff
